His parents were George and Sarah Hindley of Antrobus. BGBGBBBBBGG He lived at Antrobus for his first sixteen years and then moved with his parents to Catchwell Cottage, Runcorn Road, Barnton. Peter began as an apprentice shoemaker with his father and eventually Peter took over the shoemaking business. Martha (his wife to be) was christened on 16 th December1818 at Frodsham,. She was the daughter of John and Mary Dean who were living at Overton, Frodsham. On 17 th January 1843 Peter married Martha Abram (a Frodsham widow) daughter of John PETER Dean a Little HINDLEY Leigh farmer. (1810-1889) 1810PETE/1 Peter s business thrived. In 1851 he was employing 3 men and in 1871 Peter was a Master Shoemaker employing two men. Martha was thought to be a rather quick tempered lady whilst Peter was of a more gentle disposition. As a young boy George Hindley (1878-1934) remembered his grandfather taking him fishing to escape Martha s wrath. According to George s daughter, Lucy, the message would be, Come on George, you and me will go fishing. At one time it is believed that the village band held practices at Catchwell Cottage, or in an out-building on the site. Rumour has it that during these practices Peter Hindley pulled out rotten teeth - no doubt with his shoemaking equipment! Peter died on 24th November 1889 and is buried in the Churchyard at Barnton Parish Church. Unfortunately, no photographs of Peter have been found. A photograph of Martha was found in 2010 and is shown on page 3.

1810PETE/3 Harry Hindley born Jan 13 th 1880. Jane Hindley born Sept 23 rd 1885. Lucy Hindley born June 23 rd 1887. James Hindley born April 23 rd 1889. Died Nov 10 th 1892. On the death of Thomas Hindley the family bible was not passed on to one of Thomas s children. This was possibly because his only living son in the 1930s, George, had died in 1934 two years before Thomas died in 1936. By 2012 the family bible was in the possession of a descendent of Samuel Hindley (1876-1942). Martha became the main organiser of an Independent Society of Methodists. This was a Wesleyan Church known as the Free Church. Meetings were held at Catchwell Cottage until a purpose built church was established in Oakwood Lane, Barnton in the late 1800s. This photograph was with a group of individual photographs of Methodist women in Barnton. The date is unknown but is likely to be in the 1890s. Although Martha probably had some angry moments (as do most people) her mix of genes with Peter was beneficial to future generations.
1810PETE/4 Catchwell Cottage, Runcorn Road, Barnton, c1890s. Peter lived here for 63 years. The telegraph posts are different suggesting the photographs were taken on different dates. In the lower photograph the Ketch Well is visible. The stone trough is on the roadside, in line with the centre of the house. There is a clearer view of the Ketch Well in a photograph taken c1950 : see 1775GEOR/2.
