John Dys and The Frying Dutchman received a lot of press in the early days when John conducted the political hamburger straw vote wherein John named hamburgers after electoral candidates and tallied the vote based on burger sales. Because of the laws forbidding straw polls at election time, John Dys hamburger poll was the only one of its kind. 8 de story behind de dutch It all started in 1974 when De Dutch founder, John Dys, went back home to the Netherlands to visit his parents. WEST 4TH LOCATION John Dys with Lorraine Waring and De Dutch President, Bill Waring 1979 It was in a restaurant that he rediscovered the pannekoek a traditional Dutch delight, resembling a thinner, flatter, Western-style pancake. He immediately had a vision of bringing the pannekoek to Canada, and a year later, the first Original Dutch Pannekoek House was opened in Vancouver, BC. Since then, our name has changed slightly, but the unique, quality taste of our authentic pannekoek has stayed the same. And while most people still can t quite pronounce pannekoek, it hasn t stopped them from enjoying it all across Western Canada. We hope you ll join us for a meal experience that is simply de best.
