Greetings to everyone! The holidays are upon us and before you know it, they'll be over. Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and will enjoy your New Year with great friends. December began with a Memorial Service which remembered all of our members who have passed away this year. This service was well attended by several families and friends who were grateful to be in attendance for the service. The Ladies Stagette went very well, Connie Steffen did a great job of getting everything ready and having plenty of help. Everyone enjoyed the food by Tailored Catering this year. Bill Woodruff enjoyed calling bingo this year for the ladies. Great job all around. We have had a dedicated group of members attending the Bengals games despite the their losing record. They come each week hoping for a good game but don't always see the game they had hoped for. One thing is for sure...they really enjoy the company of others with them. Well, there's always next year again! We also have had Euchre on the 2nd Saturday this month which started at 7:00. Card players seem to have a good time while playing. The last euchre night was canceled due to Christmas Eve. Our fish fries have had somewhat light attendance this month. With Christmas parties and shopping now over, hopefully they'll return to where they have been. Coming up this week, the veterans will be at the lodge on Tuesday for a lasagna dinner and bingo afterwards. They should be at the lodge around 4:30. We also have the lodge In-Between Party on Wednesday which starts at 4PM. Come enjoy a good time with good friends and plenty of food. The food is provided by the lodge unless you bring something for your table. Also, remember the New Years bingo on Sunday, January 1. Doors open at 11am, Jitneys start at 1:00. Regular games at 2:00. Doors open at 11:00. No bingo on Monday, Jan 2. It was really nice celebrating Christmas with family this weekend. Now we end the month celebrating the New Year. Many different parties will be going on so just remember to travel safely and if you drink, please drink responsibly and don t drive. Have a Happy New Year and enjoy the holiday but remember to be safe while traveling. Linda Caldwell, PER Acting Exalted Ruler 2

Ken and Ruth Bray resign from Veterans Program After 43 years of volunteering, Ruth and I will no longer be working in the Elks Veterans Program. Circumstances have occurred that prevent us from continuing and we are handing in our resignations. It was a wonderful experience and we really enjoyed working with the VA Hospital personnel and with all the patients through these years. Sincerely, Ken and Ruth Bray Remembering our Janet Arnold How do I honor the memory of our little Janet Arnold. My heart hurts thinking she will no longer be in our midst, even though I know she is now out of all pain, and with her darling son Roy. She did so much for so many it is hard to describe how generous and kind she was. Her quick wit and ever ready smile will be sorely missed. She worked for any and all charity groups especially our Lodge, and never quit giving of her time or talent. She was so loving and giving to everyone she met. We will all miss her sweet face tremendously. She will never be forgotten. Rest in peace our little whirlwind. We will always love you and will miss you greatly. Fran Bray Veterans Christmas 2016 "As Long as There are Veterans in Our Hospitals, The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Will Never Forget Them". Newport Lodge #273 certainly follows this mantra. A total of 89 presents were delivered to the patients at the Ft Thomas V.A. and another 46 presents were delivered to the patients in the Community Living Center now located in the Cincinnati VA hospital. On Tuesday December 27 the lodge hosted 24 patients, 4 staff and 1 family member to a delicious Lasagna dinner followed by bingo. Weather permitting the Veterans will return again to the lodge on Tuesday the 24th of January for dinner and bingo. I can't thank enough all the volunteers for all the help they give for our Veterans. Please join me in Thanking Ken and Ruth Bray for all their years of hard work and dedication to this wonderful endeavor. I invite any and all members to join in on our monthly visits with the Veterans. Just being present to spend time with them is more than enough and greatly appreciated. I would also like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Wonderful New Year Scott Hehman, Veterans Chairman, Trustee, PER 5

A Note from Dan Bray absent ER Hello and Happy New Year to all of you, Most of us made it through another year, for those that lost loved ones in the past year I would like to extend our deepest sympathies. Our prayers are with all of our members and their families that have lost loved ones. We sincerely pray the new year brings healthier and happier days for all of us. I would like to congratulate and welcome our new members, who were just initiated on December 15th, Cheryl Coleman, Charlie Coleman, Richard Lockhart,Thomas Milius, Brian Dedman and Eric DeBruyn. My hope is that you will find things to do and make many new friends as you embark on being a member of a very good and dedicated lodge. You will only get as much enjoyment out of it as you put into being a good member and getting involved in one or more of our programs and events. I know I wasn t there to meet you or install you, and I apologize for my absence. I hope you had a nice and impressive initiation given by our dedicated lodge officers. What I am hoping for in this new year, is that everyone takes part in one of our lodge functions. You can help with the Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Dictionary program, possibly start up a charity function or even start a new event to help our lodge. If you would like to get involved in the Americanism program, or help with any one of the many programs we sponsor it would be appreciated. Please see Russ or any officer for information on getting involved. We can always use help on the Kitchen Teams, or Cole Slaw teams, or just to sub for someone that can t make it on the team for that week. We always like to have our new members and not so new members join the ENF, (Elks National Foundation). You can pledge $100 and that will start with a payment of $10 (given to Russ) and then the Grand Lodge will bill you for $10 a year for the next 9 years. That pledge helps the lodge tremendously, by getting us to our Grand Lodge ENF membership goal, which helps to pay for the expenses that are incurred in all of our great programs. Maybe you would like to make a New Years pledge this year to get a little more or a lot more involved with what goes on within the lodge and the programs we have available. Come to some of the meetings and learn more about how the lodge is run, and how you might be able to help. Nothing special or different is happening this month at the lodge for me to expand upon, and my year is quickly drawing to a close, I can t believe it s going so fast. My wife Fran and I are sill in Colorado helping out my brother and sister in law, but we should be home around February we hope as long as everything goes well. I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers, they are definitely helping. Thanks again to Linda Caldwell for handling the ER duties while I am away. We love and miss you all. 8 Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Ladies Auxiliary President Column Wishing everyone a Happy and prosperous New Year. Nothing much going on with the ladies for January and February. Please keep March open not sure of details or dates of the Ladies Spring Stagette. The only sure thing is Janet Landers will be chairman of this event. Details will follow. Please keep all our members and their families in your prayers. Thank you to everyone that is always willing to help get things done. Not mentioning any names except Mary Lawson my vice president who is always there when I need her or a phone call away. Remember ladies we couldn't do the things we do without all of you. Love you all. Gloria Crowe, Ladies President January 2016 Quarter Auction. I would like to Thank all of our Elks that came to support the Quarter Auction and all the wonderful ladies that baked. Our next Quarter Auction will be on January 17, 2016 at 7 pm, we will need baked goods again. Thank You for your support each month. Sincerely, Janet Arnold PS. Our dear Janet passed away on 12/27 peacefully in her sleep. She will always be remembered. Fran Can Tab Collections We have collected 126 lbs. of pull tabs to recycle for Ronald McDonald House. Please help us collect the aluminum can tabs from your soft drink and beer cans by removing them from the top of your canned drink and placing them in the bowl on top of the blue recycling trash can. You can also hand them to Janet Arnold or our bartender, Kathy Hargett. These little tabs are recycled and the money received for the aluminum helps subsidize the lodging costs for families of very sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. Thank you so much to everyone for contributing to this effort. Janet Arnold 8

Better Than Take-Out Fried Rice added by Luann Crownover We love fried rice! This is a quick and easy version that I believe comes from Pampered Chef. Prep time: 25 Min Serves: 5-6 Ingredients 4 c rice, prepared 1/2 lb boneless chicken breast, cooked and cut into bite-size pieces. or same amount of medium-size cooked shrimp. 1 c peas and carrots, frozen 1 white onion, chopped 2 clove garlic, minced 2 eggs 3 Tbsp sesame oil 1/4 c soy sauce Directions 1. Prepare rice according to package instructions to yield 4 cups cooked rice. 2. Heat sesame oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Add onion, garlic, peas, and carrots. Stir fry until tender. 3. Crack eggs into pan and scramble, mixing throughout vegetables. 4. Add rice, chicken or shrimp or both, and soy sauce to pan. Stir to combine all ingredients and remove from heat. Enjoy! Creamy Tuscan Garlic Tortellini Soup Author: Alyssa Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 10 mins Creamy Tuscan Garlic Tortellini Soup is so easy to make and one of the best soups that you will make! Ingredients 2 Tablespoons butter 1 small white onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups chicken broth 28 ounce can diced tomatoes 1 15 ounce can white beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup heavy cream ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese 1 Tablespoon italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 2 cups cooked and shredded chicken (I used rotisserie) 9 ounce refrigerated tortellini 2 cups spinach Instructions In a large pot over medium heat, heat up the butter. Add onion and garlic and cook until tender. Add chicken broth, diced tomatoes, white beans, heavy cream, parmesan cheese, italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Bring to a simmer. Add the chicken, tortellini, and spinach. Let simmer for 10 minutes to thicken up and for the tortellini to cook. 10

Italian Sandwich Roll-Ups by Kara Harvey Pinterest Ingredients 8 tortillas 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1/4 cup banana peppers, chopped 1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped 24 slices Genoa salami 24 slices of ham 1 pack pepperoni (about 32 small slices) 16 slices Sargento Provolone cheese 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced (remove some of the juice and seeds) 1 head of lettuce Instructions 1. In medium bowl, combine cream cheese, banana peppers, roasted red peppers, and Italian seasoning. Mix with spoon until all ingredients are well combined. 2. Spread about three tablespoons of cream cheese mixture onto a tortilla. 3. On top of the cream cheese mixture, place three slices of salami, three slices of pepperoni, and three slices of Provolone cheese, leaving about 1/2-inch border around the edge. 4. Top with two slices of tomato and a few pieces of lettuce. Roll tortilla up tightly. 5. Place toothpicks about 1-inch apart down the rolled tortilla. Cut in between the toothpicks to create pinwheels. Repeat with remaining tortillas and fillings. Serve immediately or refrigerate until your ready to serve 20 Minute Honey Garlic Shrimp from Sally s Baking Addiction Ingredients: 1/3 cup Honey 1/4 cup soy sauce, low sodium if desired 1 TBS minced garlic 1 lb medium uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 tsp olive oil Optional chopped green onion garnish. Directions: Whisk the honey, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger (if using) together in a medium bowl. Place shrimp in a large zipped-top bag or tupperware. Pour 1/2 of the marinade mixture on top, give it all a shake or stir, then allow shrimp to marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or for up to 8-12 hours. Cover and refrigerate the rest of the marinade for step 3. (Time-saving tip: while the shrimp is marinating, I steamed broccoli and microwaved some quick brown rice.) Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place shrimp in the skillet. (Discard used marinade2.) Cook shrimp on one side until no longer pink-- about 45 seconds-- then flip shrimp over. Pour in remaining marinade and cook it all until shrimp is cooked through, about 1 minute more. Serve shrimp with cooked marinade sauce and a garnish of green onion. The sauce is excellent on brown rice and steamed veggies on the side. 11
