2 Our diner came to the Parkway in the 1960s as the fourth of four Chief Taghkanic Diners installed by Burton Coons. Though originally located in Catskill, New York, Coons later brought this diner to its site in the late 1960s. Our diner was built in 1952 by the Fodero Dining Car Company of Bloomfield, New Jersey, a postwar builder renown for its high style and quality workmanship. We purchased the diner in 2004 with the idea of serving freshly prepared meals at reasonable prices in the fine tradition of the classic American diner. The diner as we know it traces its industrial lineage back to In that year, Walter Scott, a Providence, Rhode Island, street vendor, converted a horsedrawn freight wagon to allow him to dispense hot meals and coffee to late-night shift workers outside the offices of the Providence Journal. Sam Jones of Worcester, Massachusetts, observed his popular operation and returned to Worcester to set up shop building lunch wagons for others to operate. From Worcester, the industry took hold and expanded. Eventually, builders in northern New Jersey became the dominant players, building the classic diners we all immediately recognize today as fine places to stop for a good hot meal. Taconic Parkway History The historic Taconic Parkway winds its way up the eastern bank of Hudson Valley from Mount Pleasant, New York, to the New York State Thruway at Chatham. Originally intended as a scenic touring route connecting New York City with Albany, its construction began in 1927 along a route that avoided most major cities and towns along the way, but provided some of the finest vistas in all of the Empire State. The man most responsible for the Parkway s design and route was none other than Franklin Roosevelt who served as the chairman of the Taconic State Parks Commission, and envisioned a route that incorporated the sweeping landscape of rugged mountains and family farms into the design of the northern Taconic. Construction ended in 1963 at the Thruway with no plans to extend further northward. In 1992, the state designated the parkway a Scenic Byway, making it eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Scenic Byway.
