Introduction v What is a sub sandwich? A submarine sandwich, also known as a sub, hoagie, hero, grinder, or one of many regional naming variations, is a sandwich that consists of a long roll of Italian or French bread, split long ways into two pieces and filled with a variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, seasonings, and sauces. The sandwich has no standardized name, and many U.S. regions have their own names for it. One study found 13 different names for the sandwich in the United States (sub, hoagie, grinder). The usage of the several terms varies regionally but not in any pattern, as they have been used variously by the people and enterprises who make and sell them. The terms submarine and sub are widespread and not assignable to any certain region, though many of the localized terms are clustered in the northeast United States, where most Italian Americans live.

Materials and preparation Several pieces of equipment are needed to properly make a sub-sandwich. Others are to prevent contaminating your food while other steps must be taken beforehand in order for your personal well-being.

Materials and Preparation 3 Materials and Preparation Materials A good sub sandwich is made only with the proper materials. These materials include: Bread Knife Cutting Board Apron Meats Cheeses Veggies (more specific later on in the manual) Plastic Gloves or Hand soap Long Italian or French bread roll Sauces of your choosing Seasonings Oven(optional) Baking Sheets Cooking Spray Oven Mitts(optional) Preparation Before you begin your sub sandwich making experience, it is imperative that you prepare yourself and your equipment accordingly to eliminate risks of contaminating your food with harmful bacteria. 1. Put on plastic gloves or thoroughly wash hands with hand soap.
4 How to Make a Sub Sandwich 2. Put on any standard apron 3. Clean all knives and cutting boards
Materials and Preparation 5 4. Pull out all foods from refrigerator 5. Inspect foods for any signs of mold or other contaminants
6 How to Make a Sub Sandwich 6. Preheat oven to 400 F if toasting your sandwich. Also be sure to use some form of oven mitts.
Making Your Sub-sandwich This chapter will go through the proper steps to create a sub sandwich. Making a proper sub sandwich can take around minutes for an amateur so prepare ahead of time.

Making Your Sub Sandwich 9 Making Your Sub Sandwich 1. With a bread knife in hand, slice a loaf of Italian or French long bread vertically taking care not to cut completely through. A sawing motion is most effective for control and precision. 2. Next place your choice of meat on the bottom loaf of bread. If using thin slices, place evenly across. If using chopped or smaller pieces sprinkle evenly across.
10 How to Make a Sub Sandwich 3. Place cheese on top of the meat as evenly as you can. 4. This step is optional. For those who enjoy a toasted sub, now is the time to place your sub sandwich with meat and cheese upon your baking sheet and into your pre heated oven. Pull your toasted sub out after 4-5 minutes using oven mitts.
Making Your Sub Sandwich Next using your cutting board, slice and dice your veggies of choice and add them to the mix. 6. To create extra layers, repeat steps 2, 3, and 5 in order.
12 How to Make a Sub Sandwich 7. Then add your choice of sauces and seasonings between the top loaf and the layers of meat and veggies inside the sandwich. 8. Lastly remove gloves or rewash hands and enjoy your sub-sandwich.
