It was ideally placed to host travellers on their journey from London to Liverpool. July 1753 Building was destroyed by the Holmes Chapel fire which destroyed all but St. Lukes Church, the Old Red Lion & two cottages According to licencing records, the inn was back in business under the ownership of Mr Charles Yarwood. 2 nd March 1847 Deeds to the building show the new ownership by Mr William Platt. 19 th April 1904 The G&D was bought as a fully licenced inn at an auction at The Swan, Holmes Chapel by Mr William & Mrs Emma Robinson, trustees of Frederic Robinson. 2 nd May 1970 The new G&D opened on land acquired with a house Sadlers Close on Knutsford Road. The house was subsequently demolished. 17 th April 1974 The original G&D building was demolished as a part of the Middlewich/Knutsford Road improvements Further development of the G&D with the addition of the corner conservatory & internal alterations Major landscaping of the external areas to improve kerb appeal, access from the village and develop attractive outside area.
