1 Dylan Simpson Username: dsimp10 Illinois Central College I decided to reach out to local businesses to make the change from plastic straws to paper. Jimbo s Jumbos I went and met with Danny Lohman, the owner of Jimbo s Jumbo. His restaurant was voted Tazewell County s favorite sandwich shop for I reached out to Danny, told him the general idea, and set a time to meet with him.
2 I informed him about the importance of getting rid of plastic straws. I told him that most plastic straws can t be recycled because they are too lightweight to go through the recycling sorter. I also told him that there are 8 million tons of plastic in the ocean and that by getting rid of straws he would lessen his ecofootprint. He was on board. I then gave him the pledge to fill-out and he did it with no hesitation. He was super excited to make the change. To help him get started, I bought a pack of 200 eco-friendly straws and donated them to him.
3 He pushed the plastic straws to the back of the counter and set out the eco-friendly ones in the front. He said that almost everyone who comes in gets a soft-drink, and that he expected that the straws would be gone by the end of the week. He asked me how to get more once he runs out of the 200 straws I provided him with. I contacted an eco-friendly straw company and they sent me samples of their different products. Danny and I will go over these bulk buy options and order more paper straws.
4 I presented him with a Recognition of Excellence certificate for being a changemaker in the community. I also gave him a cutout of The Last Straw to help advertise the movement. He said that he thinks this will be a good change in the community and will possibly get him more business. He said that he will be the first business in the area to promote/offer the use of paper straws.

5 [CxT] Roasting Company I also reached out to a local coffee shop. All of their coffee is small batch and roasted inhouse by their roastmaster and owner, Tristan Popadziuk. They pride themselves on updating their coffee portfolio on a regular basis with fresh crops from the most recent harvests I contacted Tristan and he was excited to meet with me. He thought that it was awesome to hear that I was working on sustainability. We met up and I talked to him more about The Last Straw.
6 I informed him of the problem. He said that he had recently heard about how bad plastic straws were. He then asked questions about paper straws, bamboo straws, and metal straws. He said that he would be happy to help and signed the pledge form. I then gave him a Recognition of Excellence certificate.
7 He was excited to try out the paper straws and said that he had been thinking about trying out the bamboo option and that this would be a good stepping stone. He told me that he is only going to provide straws upon request. I also gave him a pack of 200 eco-friendly straws to get him started (the same kind that I gave Danny). He said that he is going to keep the straws behind the counter and offer paper straws first if people ask for straws.
