Thank you each for allowing me to have many successful years in the nursery industry. PRSRT STD U.S. Postage PAID Spokane, Wa. Permit #177 Most Sincerely, John N. Lawyer President Early days at Lawyer Nursery The Lawyer Nursery genesis was my father s lifelong interest and passion for botany. Growing up in Pasadena, California afforded him little opportunity to act on his budding interest in plants. In 1919, as a thirteen year old kid, just out of school for summer vacation, he left Pasadena with three other kids his age, riding horses north across the desert to Bakersfield and Kernville. They spent the summer in the High Sierra fishing, hiking, and exploring. They repeated this trip the next three summers. During this time, my father, plant press in hand, compiled and displayed an impressive native plant collection from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. After high school his interest languished until about 1939 when he began collecting and selling historical botanical books and established a large home garden, orchard - complete with shade houses - lath and screen, and a potting shed at his home in Altadena, Calif. This continued as a hobby until after he moved the family to rural western Montana in In Montana he quickly planted a big vegetable garden, a home fruit orchard and began bench grafting fruit trees and collecting native seeds. This became the rudimentary beginnings of Lawyer Nursery. In the beginning, Lawyer Nursery consisted of seed collecting and growing seedlings in the family vegetable garden. It was a fam- John Lawyer on the family's tractor. ily venture and my father was always on the lookout for new native plants and seeds. No family outing was complete without collecting some seed, or at least bringing home numerous specimens for identification. By the time I was eight, my two siblings and I were expected to weed in the garden and within a couple of years, to weed in the nursery seed beds now estab- Continued on page 5.

Summer family outings always combined fishing and seed collecting and by early fall each year seed collecting was serious business. In the early years of seed collecting we picked tons of fruit of our local Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), Snowberry (Symphoricarpos alba), Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), and naturalized Russian Olive (Eleagnus angustifolia), hundreds of pounds of Oregon Grape (Mahonia repens), Rocky Mtn. Maple (Acer glabrum) and Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea), and collected cones of Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa). Cleaning was by hand with screens, washtubs, and buckets. The seed was either planted in the garden or sold with a classified ad in the American Nurseryman Magazine. Tarps and sticks were employed to beat the fruit off the bushes and collect the fruit, and a chain saw took down many a tree for the cones and for firewood. We heated exclusively with wood in those early years. Ingenuity set in as the volume of fruit and cones collected soon surpassed our home s basement and a couple of decrepit outbuildings. By 1959 we were well established in the nursery business. My father s grafted fruit trees were being sold locally in Missoula at farm and garden stores, and our excess seed was being shipped to other nurseries and seed dealers across the country, in much the same way as our seed collectors and suppliers serve our needs today. We grew seedlings in the garden, but had planted a few seed beds across the road on the farm. From here on, things progressed rapidly into an established nursery and seed business. We now had a state nursery license, we started buying in a few liners, and a summer budding program began. I was expected to work after school and weekends in the nursery planting, weeding, irrigating, and so on. I soon learned that my natural mechanical aptitude, and my father s lack thereof, provided an opportunity for more interesting work, and I became the family s farm mechanic. By high school I could weld, service and repair our pathetic fleet of farm equipment, and had learned to rebuild engines. Growing and selling seedlings early years In some respects, we never got past growing seedlings. It is still our main business focus in the nursery. It made sense then as it does now, shipping stock out of remote and rural Plains, Mont. The number of species in production increased rapidly through the 1960 s and 1970 s. Continued on page 8.

By 1972 we had several employees and hired our first professional to help manage production. Nursery Business After 1979 the company grew rapidly. First at Plains, Montana with the addition of more land, staff and facilities. Then in 1989 when the former Industrial Forestry Association (IFA) nursery near Olympia, Washington was added. I was familiar with this facility from my days with Weyerhaeuser Company and knew it was a unique and special assest in terms of soil, climate, water and facilities. The facilities include 175 acres of rich uniform sandy loam. At Olympia, USDA Hardiness Zone 7, we were able to expand our inventory furthur by growing a wider assortment of conifer and deciduous seedlings and transplants including difficult to propagate species that just didn t grow as well in cold Montana winters. The Olympia, Wash. nursery has 3 modern greenhouses operating. Our greenhouse production in Olympia begain in The space has grown to 10,000 square feet of heated greenhouse and 8,000 square feet of shade structure. Production this year will exceed 180,000 plugs spread over 36 species. Our greenhouses are equipped with lights for photoperiod control, roll up side curtains for ventilation and traveling booms for irrigation, fertilization and nutrient supplementation which has allowed us to start many difficult species as plugs before transplanting them in the field for a more finished product. Lawyer Nursery, Plains, Montana. dealers, first domestic, but by the early 1970 s to tree and shrub seed dealers in western Europe. He spoke and read French and German and established a network of seedsmen and nurserymen in Europe. By the time I came into the business full time, he was well established with seed dealers throughout eastern and western Europe, the Soviet Union, India, Japan, and of course, Canada. Import and Export An important part of our seed business has been importing tree and shrub seed for resale in the United States to other nurseries and seed dealers, and in exporting seed of native species collected in the U.S. This has been exciting business activity for many years and afforded many opportunities for business travel to rural areas of many countries. We have sourced seed in its native habitat and often inspected the genetic variability of species within their native range. These efforts have been facilitated by our suppliers, technical professionals and other tree and shrub seed dealers worldwide. Many species of woody plants are still best propagated from seed. The low cost and certainty with seedlings of many species is still an important consideration. There is increasing concern for the lack of genetic diversity with mass plantings of clonally propagated stock originating all from the same parent. Through the years Lawyer Nursery has met and faced many challenges. As time moves forward we are positive that the hole we have left in the nursery industry will be filled by others and we wish them as much success as we have enjoyed. Thank you for your patronage through the years. Tsuga mertensiana (Mountain Hemlock) Transplant P WA 600 Reimold Horticultural Auction August 14-16, 2018 Register to become a bidder. Bidding open now. Seed business early years Selling seed became a business all its own and that continues today. My father started by mimeographing lists that were mailed to interested nurserymen and seed Lawyer Nursery, Olympia, Washington.
