McDonald's and KFC have made sure that people can buy a hamburger wherever they are in the world, but hamburgers actually started in Germany and were named after the German town of Hamburg. Hot dogs, another type of meat sandwich, were eaten as early as 1864 in Europe. When they came to America, the word "dog" also meant sausage and so a "hot dog" was actually a "hot sausage". Burger Pancakes Ingredients Basic pancake recipe batter (replace the milk with buttermilk and flour with self-raising flour for a thicker pancake) Desiccated coconut Large soft double chocolate chip cookies Green, yellow and red food coloring Sesame seeds Icing sugar Milk chocolate, melted 1. Make up a batch of basic pancakes and allow to cool slightly. We made American-style pancakes for this recipe by replacing the milk with buttermilk and the plain flour with self-raising. 2. Color the coconut with green food coloring to resemble lettuce. 3. Mix the red and yellow food colorings with two separate batches of icing sugar to make the ketchup and mustard sauces. 4. Spread the melted chocolate onto the pancake and place one or two cookies on top. 5. Drizzle over the red and yellow icing and sprinkle with the coconut. 6. Spread another pancake with the melted chocolate and place on top and then sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Pizza Dumplings Ingredients 1 lb. extra-lean ground beef 1 large onion, chopped 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste 3/4 cup water 1 1/2 tsp dried oregano 3/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed 1/4 tsp ground black pepper 2 cups shredded reduced-fat mozzarella cheese (8 oz) 8 oz frozen Italian-style vegetables, thawed 1 package low-fat refrigerator dinner roll dough (8 rolls) 1 egg white 2 tsp water Optional: Freshly grated Parmesan cheese Continue...

9 Extra practice for between lessons 3. Pizza Dumplings Continued... Directions 1 Preheat the over to 375. Coat a 13x9" baking dish with nonstick spray. 2 Coat a large nonstick skillet with nonstick spray and warm over medium-high heat. Add the beef and onion and cook, breaking up the meat and stirring, for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the meat is no longer pink and the onion is softened. Drain any fat. 3 Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, water, 1 tsp of the oregano, salt, rosemary and pepper to the skillet. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until well-blended and slightly thickened. 4 Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of the mozzarella over the beef. Spoon the mixed vegetables evenly over the cheese. Top with the remaining 1 cup mozzarella. 5 Cut each dinner roll in half horizontally to make 16 halves. Arrange decoratively over the mozzarella. 6 In a small cup, beat together the egg white and water. Brush over the dinner rolls. Sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 tsp oregano. Bake for 20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown. Serve sprinkled with Parmesan, if using.
