Marsamxett Harbour is the northern of Valletta s two natural harbours, and has evolved into a hub for leisure activities such as yachting and tour cruise boats. In the middle of Marsamxett Harbour lie Fort Manoel and Lazzareto hospital. Built by the Knights of St. John, they are homage to 18th century military engineering. These stunning buildings are backdropped by the Sliema Waterfront, a modern urban centre that is the largest commercial district in Malta. The juxtaposition of the imposing and historic with the modern bustling present, creates a unique atmosphere which captures the very essence of the Maltese Islands.
