2 Birthday Wishes No Birthdays for this fortnight. Pie Warmers Due to the warmer weather in Term 4 pie warmers will cease. Junk Food at School I encourage parents to examine the ingredients label on the convenience foods that their child/ children may be bringing in as part of their morning tea and lunch. No doubt these foods are delicious but often their nutritional value is limited. As treats, they are fine but as a substitute for a filling snack or meal that will increase and help concentration in the school setting, their value is doubtful. DOE has developed the following policy. There are some interesting recipes below. Healthy Food and Drink Policy Schools are well placed to support healthy eating and can play a vital role in helping to reduce childhood obesity. Health and Physical Education curriculum delivered in public schools promotes nutrition and physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. The school canteen/food service can provide a valuable contribution to the school community and support a whole of school approach to health eating. In 2007, the Department of Education introduced the Healthy Food and Drink policy. The policy applies to the food and drinks served by public school canteens/food services as well as to environments where the principal is directly responsible for the supply of food and drinks e.g. classroom rewards, school camps and excursions. A traffic light system is used to categorise food and drinks as Green, Amber or Red to help public schools plan menus that promote healthy, nutritious and affordable food and drinks. Parents are encouraged to use the traffic light system at home too. GREEN categories are encouraged. Schools should aim to fill their menus with these healthy foods. AMBER foods should be selected carefully and eaten in moderation. RED food and drinks are off the menu and will not be available in public schools. Preheat your oven to 175 C. Grease and line your loaf tin. Mine measures 19.5cm x 9.5cm. 2. Place the bananas, dates, almond butter, salt and cinnamon into your processor and blend until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Add the coconut, flour and eggs and mix to combine. Add the bi-carb and lemon juice and mix to combine. 3. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Bake for 45 minutes or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Leave the loaf in the tin to cool for five minutes before gently transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. 4. Slice. Serve. Eat and enjoy! NB: You can substitute the almond butter with hulled tahini to make this nut-free. Moorine Rock Primary School Newsletter Term 4 Week Page 4

5 Seedy Slice recipe Ingredients 4 rounded tablespoons honey* 4 rounded tablespoons hulled tahini 1 cup desiccated coconut 1/3 cup sunflower seeds 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds 1/3 cup sesame seeds Pinch of salt Method 1. Preheat your oven to 175 C. Grease and line a square 20cm tin with paper overhanging the sides for easy removal. 2. Place the ingredients into your processor and blend until the mixture is completely broken down and resembling a fine, sticky crumb. Press the mixture firmly into your prepared tin and bake for 14 minutes. Remove the slice from the oven and leave to cool in the tin for five minutes before gently transferring to a cooling rack. Allow to cool completely prior to cutting. 3. Slice. Serve. Eat and enjoy. 4. Tip: You can use rice malt or maple syrup if you prefer. 5. NB: you need to blend the mixture really well and, once cooked, leave it to cool prior to cutting to ensure it isn't crumbly. No Blend Bliss Balls Ingredients 1/2 cup hulled tahini 1/3 cup honey* 1/2 teaspoon concentrated natural vanilla extract Pinch of salt 1 tablespoons cacao or cocoa 1 1/4 cups desiccated coconut Method 1. Place the honey, tahini, vanilla and salt into a medium sized bowl and mix until well combined. 2. Add the cacao or cocoa and mix to combine. 3. Add the coconut and mix. Use your hands to work the mixture together. 4. Once the mixture is well combined use your hands to shape and press the mixture into balls, I made 10. Place the balls into the fridge to set. 5. Serve, eat and enjoy. 6. Tip: You can use rice malt syrup instead of honey if you prefer. Moorine Rock Primary School Newsletter Term 4 Week Page 5

6 Carrot, Zucchini and Chocolate Muffins Ingredients 275 grams butter, room temperature 1 cup rapadura sugar 2 eggs 2 cups spelt flour 1/2 cup cacao powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon bi-carb of soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup yoghurt 1/2 cup milk (optional, use if mixture is too dry) 1 zucchini, grated and squeeze out the moisture 1 carrot, grated and squeeze out the moisture Method 1. Preheat oven to 175 C. 2. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with paper cases. 3. In a large bowl cream the butter and sugar until light and creamy. 4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. 5. Stir in the yoghurt and milk if using. 6. In a separate bowl combine the flour, cacao, baking powder, bi-carb of soda and salt. 7. Pour into the creamed mixture and fold ingredients together until just combined. 8. Fold in zucchinis and carrots. 9. Fill the paper case until 2/3 full. 10. Bake for approximately minutes or when toothpick comes out clean. 11. Cool in the tray for 10 minutes then turn out onto wire rack. Oat, Seed and Date Bars Ingredients 125 grams butter 1/2 cup coconut sugar (love the caramel flavour it imparts and goes really well with the dates) 1/2 cup Medjool dates, chopped 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla powder or extract 1 cup spelt flour 1 cup oats 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds Method 1. Preheat oven to 175 C. 2. Grease and line a 9 x 22cm loaf tin with parchment paper. Moorine Rock Primary School Newsletter Term 4 Week Page 6

7 3. Melt butter in small saucepan, once melted keep on very low heat and whisk in the sugar until smooth. 4. Turn heat off, add dates and stir through. I highly recommend dipping a finger into the mixture to make sure it tastes ok. 5. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in the egg and vanilla. 6. Add flour, oats, chia and sunflower seeds and stir until combined. 7. Pour into loaf tin and bake for 20 minutes. 8. Cool in pan for 5 minutes, turn out onto a wire rack. 9. Once cool, slice into bars and pop into lunchboxes. NB: If texture is an issue you can grind up the sunflower and chia seeds before adding to the mixture. Vegetable Pikelets Prep Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 10 mins Notes This recipe makes 12 pikelets. For this recipe I used grated carrot, cauliflower, broccoli and shallots. You can just use whatever veggies you have on hand. Don't forget to season these well. They really need the flavour! You can use low-fat milk and low-fat tasty cheese if you want to lower the fat content. Ingredients: 2 cups wholemeal self-raising flour 1 1/2 cups milk 2 cups raw vegetables, chopped finely salt and pepper 2 eggs, lightly beaten 50g butter (for frying) 1 cup tasty cheese, grated Cream cheese with some chives to serve Method: 1. In a bowl, whisk all ingredients except for butter and cream cheese together. 2. Heat a little butter in a frying pan. Using quarter cup measures, fry each pikelet until golden and turn. 3. Serve warm with cream cheese spread on top. Junior Tennis Coaching Just a reminder that junior tennis starts this Thursday 12th October. 11 Major outback motoring adventure across WA to help kids with cancer WesCarpade is Camp Quality s outback motoring adventure held in Western Australia. A fleet of 25+ quirky themed vehicles will be travelling over 2,000km on a round trip from Armadale to Northam on October This year WesCarpade sets off from Armadale on Sunday 15 October, heading south through the Great Southern, looping back around the Goldfields and finishing with a community inspired finale event on Saturday 21 October. The event has attracted entrants from Donnybrook, Bunbury and Bridgetown, as well as Perth and as far as Geraldton this year. Each car must be at least 20 years old, and each team spends the year theming their cars, making it roadworthy and encouraging people to sponsor them for their week-long adventure. The event is fully supported by dedicated volunteer officials, including local business and community groups. Nedge Sinanovski, Camp Quality s General Manager Programs and Community Fundraising said: We re so humbled by local businesses donating their goods and services to this event to ensure our running costs are kept low and more money goes to our deserving families. These generous local companies include Holden, St Johns Ambulance, GJ Freight Donnybrook, Bunbury Plumbing Services and Allmark. The aim is to raise an engine-busting $500,000 - enough for Camp Quality to support a further 70 families who have a child living with cancer for the next year, through their resilience-building programs. Chris Millsy Mills, former weatherman for GWN7, said: This is the sixth Camp Quality wescarpade I ve been on, and I love it every single year. We get to dress up like fools and drive through the beautiful outback. But most importantly, we re raising essential funds for a great cause helping Camp Quality to create a better life for kids living with cancer. Along the way, the 25+ quirky cars will pull into towns in a fanfare of sirens, horns, water cannons, lights and colour in true Camp Quality style.
