3 A Greenpeace Guide to Genetically Engineered Food In the absence of a strong mandatory labeling policy in the Philippines concerning the use of genetically modified organisms or GMOs in food, Greenpeace has compiled this True Food Consumer Guide to give consumers the right to know what is in their food. Greenpeace commissioned tests on a number of food sold in local stores and supermarkets prove that GMOs have indeed already penetrated the nation s food supply. In the face of this consistent rejection of GMOs by consumers in many countries, multinational food companies like and Novartis have decided to abandon the use of GE ingredients in their, at least in those countries where consumer awareness and resistance to GMOS are strong. But in developing countries like the Philippines, many of these companies continue to use GMOs in their, virtually applying a discriminatory set of standards for consumers of poor nations. Instead of providing mechanisms that would allow Filipinos to exercise their rights to know and choose non- genetically engineered food, the government has resorted to giving out false and unsubstantiated claims about the safety of these novel food items. Doctors and scientists have warned that these foods may not be safe in the diet or the environment. Moreover, there is no convincing and conclusive evidence to establish their safety for human consumption. One only needs to consider that GMOs do not and will not occur naturally. Hence, the effects of introducing exotic elements into the environment and in human diets remain unknown for the most part. Certain GMOs have been linked to the development of allergies and anti-biotic resistance. The death of beneficial insects, the creation of superweeds, and the increasing crop dependence on herbicides, all point to the potentially irreversible consequences of GMOs on life and the environment. The absence of a labeling policy denies consumers of their power to make proenvironmental decisions at the cash register. This Guide focuses on food made with ingredients that are commonly derived from GE crops. The most widely known GE crops are soy, corn, cotton and canola. The biotechnology industry is developing GE varieties of almost every food we eat. But many of these are not yet on the market. This Guide does not Include foods that are not genetically altered, such as most fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oils, whole wheat or rice, and other foods that do not contain any GE ingredients on the market. For example, the baby foods listed here are only those that contain suspect ingredients, but many other non-ge baby foods are not listed because they do not include ingredients that could currently come from GE crops. Soya, corn, canola, and cotton constitute 98% of all commercially grown GE crops. Ninety five percent of these crops are found in the United States, Canada and Argentina. Since the Philippines imports huge amounts of soya and corn from the United States where genetic contamination is widespread, then the possibility of food contamination is very high. The high number of food testing positive for GMO contamination in this Guide is proof to that effect.

It is not intended to be a comprehensive list but more a starting point for those who wish to exercise precaution in their shopping and food choices. The Guide includes a listing of consumer tested by Greenpeace for GMO content. Greenpeace commissioned three rounds of food tests conducted in December 2000, May 2001 and September 2001 by Hong Kong DNA Chips, an independent Hong Kong-based laboratory specializing in DNA tests. Products tested were either locally manufactured or imported. Aside from this, Greenpeace compiled the lists primarily from direct communications with food producers. In some cases, representatives of the companies concerned issued policy statements or verbal clarifications in response to Greenpeace inquiries. Their manufacturers have also made clear either in public statements or direct communication with Greenpeace that they would refrain from using GMO-contaminated ingredients in their. Some food items which tested positive at the time of testing but whose manufacturer later vowed to eliminate the use of GE ingredients in their are also included in the GREEN list but are marked with double asterisks, as in the case of Gerber (Novartis). Products in the GRAY list are those which proved negative for GE ingredients at the time of testing. However, their manufacturers have so far refused to make clear and categorical policy statements concerning the use of genetically altered ingredients in their. Products in the BLACK list are those that were found positive for GE ingredients at the time of testing. At the time of publication, food manufacturers that have not yet issued public statements saying they would abandon the use of GE ingredients in their fall under this list. Products which tested positive despite a companyproclaimed GE-free policy are also placed in this list if the company does not take steps to immediately eliminate the GE ingredient in the food item. These are marked with a triple asterisk. Since organic farming excludes genetic engineering, buying organic food as much as possible is the best way to avoid GE food. Greenpeace will update and change the lists from time to time depending on results of future tests and changes in the policies of food manufacturers.
