3 W E L C O M E Dear Customer Whether your are existing customer or new to us, welcome to our new season s catalogue. Stock is supplied bare root and container grown in a range of sizes, but with the key note of quality. The majority of stock is produced on site. All our own container grown stock is grown in 100% peat free compost. The range we offer is based on our experience of what is healthy and thrives in the wet and windy southwest of England. Therefore it is suitable for growing all over Britain. This catalogue can also be downloaded from our website ( The website offers a wealth of information for people wishing to plant trees, including a photo gallery, and a comprehensive guide to planting, establishment and formative pruning. Trade and retail customers are welcome to visit the nursery to view stock, but remember we are a working nursery and stout footwear is generally required. Advice is available from staff on site and over the phone. After over 40 years working with trees, Kevin is a valuable source of technical guidance for trade and amateur customers. He can be booked for site visits and advisory work. Just contact the office to arrange this. To help customers in selecting trees, we have an arboretum area of about 2 acres plus several orchards. These areas offer an attractive aid to customers both professional and amateur and facilitate the various training events that are held throughout the year. Information on these courses can be found in the Events section of the website. Visitors are welcome to visit and stroll around the arboretum and fruit orchards. A large proportion of our stock is available container grown for planting all year round. We start lifting field grown ornamentals in November and field grown fruit in December. These bare root plants are available until some time in March, depending on the season. Mail orders are dispatched from December to March. For detailed information on delivery please see page 36. 26 FRUIT SOME NOTES ON CHOOSING AND PLANTING FRUIT TREES We offer a large range of fruit varieties that we have selected for their suitability for the South West of England. This means they are generally suited to all of the wet and windy western side of Britain, as well as the easier East. They are vigorous and disease resistant in most situations and suitable for growing without pesticide use. In the following descriptions, the flowering periods for most fruit varieties are given in the RHS number category 1 7. Cider apples are listed as Early, Mid or Late. However bear in mind that these periods overlap. For example, an apple in group 3 will be pollinated by another variety in groups 2, 3 or 4. The best pollination occurs when there are two or more pollinators. Even self-fertile varieties set better crops if cross pollinated. Pollination can be helped by planting other species of the same group nearby; for example, crab apples to pollinate apples or pear species to pollinate pears. The flowering period for certain rare fruit varieties may not be stated if we haven t yet ascertained it. Fruit trees flower at different times. Plums start first in March, then pears in April, and finally apples that go through May and some into June. As plums and pears flower so early, the best results are achieved with the tougher self-fertile varieties planted in sheltered sites. Pollination of all fruits can be improved by encouraging wild pollinating insects, keeping hives of bees near your trees and maintaining or planting good sheltering hedges to reduce wind speed. Remember, though, that too little air movement will encourage humidity and thereby scab infection. As a rule of thumb, standard orchards in the South West are planted at 30 feet (9 metres) apart (about 60 trees/acre). Bush trees are spaced at about 15 feet (4.5 metres). Bear in mind that vigour varies between varieties, irrespective of rootstock. On the same rootstock a vigorous variety will grow bigger than a weaker growing variety. Both will grow bigger on richer, deeper soil on a sheltered site and smaller on shallow poor soil or an exposed site. The Thornhayes Collection In recent years, commercial cider growers have increasingly planted orchards using the M116 rootstock. It is slightly less vigorous than MM106, anchors itself well, but most significantly performs much better than MM106 on heavy sites that lie wet in winter. M116 is much less likely to succumb to collar rot and Phytophthora root rots. We offer a small range of apple varieties with very good resistance to scab and canker on this rarely available rootstock. It will be an ideal basis for customers on marginal sites to start growing bush or trained trees with less risk of failure. We will welcome customer feedback and will expand the range and quantity of trees to suit future demand. Our trees are propagated on the rootstocks listed below. We find these are the best suited to the soils and conditions of the wetter western side of Britain. 38 DELIVERY DETAILS 1. There is a minimum order of 100 net for delivered orders. Any orders of less than 100 will have to be collected from the nursery. 2. Within a 50 mile radius of the nursery, delivery is charged on a sliding scale dependent on distance. (There is no limit on plant size). 3. Orders of large trees within the Midlands and Southern England can be arranged with a contract haulier and are priced individually. (There is no size limit on plants). 4. Delivery to Scotland, Ireland and the Channel Islands is by 2/3 day freight and is calculated individually. (Size limit as in item 5). 5. Within mainland England and Wales, deliveries of smaller orders is by 2/3 day freight and is charged at 30% of the net cost of the order. (We cannot deliver larger than a 6ft tall plant or a 5 litre pot). 6. For all orders delivered from the nursery in the 2017/2018 season we reserve the right to charge a fuel levy should there be a large increase in petroleum costs.
