2 2 the CottaGe Garden society Members seed distribution Keep this seed list - you will need it again if you order seed! however, the list will appear on the website from late January. Please read these notes carefully before ordering. nb we can only send seed to society members living in the uk and the eu as import regulations forbid it elsewhere. Closing date: You can send in your order as soon as you receive this list. all orders must be received by January 8th seeds will not begin to be sent out until after this date but should arrive by mid February. if yours have not arrived by this time, contact Margaret Mason (as also if you receive the wrong order, or any other problems). orders are processed in date order of receipt, with donors receiving priority in each fortnightly batch. Allocation: all members are entitled to 15 packets of seed. Joint members may have a further five. donors of five or more varieties of seed are allowed another three packets; of eight or more varieties, six packets; and of 12 or more varieties, 10 packets. there is also an allowance of four packets from the extras list per order. include plenty of substitutes to ensure your full allocation can be completed - there is not a great deal of seed and very little of some varieties. if seed runs low and we can t fill your order from substitutes given, you will not get a full allowance, but if you have filled the substitute grid we will make it up with random packets. nb. no substitutes for extras. Handling charge: the handling charge is 5 (uk) per order, but for now remains at 5 euros (eu only) to facilitate payment in cash, but please note this will increase to 10 euros next year. a cheque or Po for the correct amount, made out to the Cottage Garden society, must be enclosed with your order. we cannot accept eurocheques due to bank charges, but euro notes may be sent and invariably arrive safely. Seed varieties: each variety listed has a number, and only this number is guaranteed to appear on the seed packet, although most packets are now labelled. Keep a note of what you ordered. How to order: order seeds by number only. Columns must all be completed in consecutive numerical order, running on from one column to the next,
3 except for substitutes, which may be listed in order of preference (top to bottom then left to right). Please refer to the newly published rules to make sure you order correctly, and note that orders which are not filled in correctly, or which arrive with incorrect or no payment or are sent to the wrong address will be delayed, reducing your chance of receiving the seeds you want. include with your order a self-addressed adhesive label, not an envelope; the label does not need to be stamped. Many people forget this label, and doing so will not incur a penalty, but please try to remember as it saves much time. Please bear in mind that seeds are donated from members gardens and will have been open-pollinated. the name given on the list is that of the seed parent. it is possible for nearly all of them to have been cross-fertilised, though many genera rarely do hybridise. named cultivars and hybrids, even if not cross-fertilised, are unlikely to come true, and their offspring should not be given the cultivar name, but in most cases where cross-fertilisation has not taken place, a proportion of the offspring will resemble the seed parent. since the seed is donated, the society cannot in any case guarantee that it is correctly named. all society seed lists have an element of chance in them; that is part of the fun - so good luck with your selection! information about the seed list this list was compiled and checked to the best of my ability using the rhs Plant Finder and other works of reference, and the internet. those names i was unable to verify i have marked * with an asterisk. there may be a further opportunity to obtain seed (in March - see March magazine) after the main distribution. this will be a random selection of leftover seed, only identifiable by the seed list number and not by name. so your seed list will be essential if you wish to apply for seed at this stage! British natives may have been collected in gardens or in other countries where they grow, so if provenance is important please do not rely on this seed, especially as mis-identification is also possible. we are very grateful to all the donors who provided seed and to members of the Cheshire Group who helped to pack it. Margaret Mason. 3
