This wine is a big, toasty, yeasty wine made mostly from pinot noir. It is made from 45% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay and 20% meunier from vineyards on the mountain of Reims, the Côtes de Blancs and the valley of the Marne Ariston Vintage Brut...$29.99 This is the best 96 I have tasted yet, from anyone. Paul-Vincent Ariston decided to hold this wine and leave it on the yeast even longer than Roederer held back their Cristal! The wine has a purity of pinot noir fruit and a rare focus that reminds me of Volnay on the nose. In the mouth, it is bright and light without lacking concentration. It is just plain complete! The low price does not make one bit of sense, but I am not going to argue for a higher one! Gary Westby Ariston Aspasie Brut Prestige...$29.99 This champagne is made from the oldest (50 to 60 years!) vines of this small 25- acre property. It has incredible old vine density, a serious and powerful character that reminds me of the fantastically rare and expensive Bollinger Ay Villes Vignes. The cuvée is 40% chardonnay, 30% pinot noir, and 30% meunier. The red fruit dominates. A masculine, rich style that finishes forever and still refreshes.

I was looking back on two of our first newsletters (Spring 1980, vol 2, no 1 and Spring 1983, vol 4, no 1) and I had to chuckle at the editorials I wrote. In the 1980 issue, the article was titled And the Prices Keep Rising! I was bemoaning the fact that imported wine prices were increasing rapidly, mainly because the dollar was so weak at about 4.5 francs to the dollar, much weaker than the current $1.2 per Euro). I ended by saying our advice to our customers concerning stocking their cellars is to be careful with the imports and search out good California buys. There were still bargains from all sources, e.g Grahams Port at $12, 1976 Sassicaia at $10.95, and 1975 Silver Oak Cab at $ In the 1983 issue, the article was titled The Times Have Changed. Well, the dollar was over 7 francs (it went to 10F in 1985) and our advice was just the opposite, as California wineries were raising their prices each year. Again, there were many bargains to be had, e.g Pichon Lalande ($11.75), Veuve Clicquot Brut ($15.50), and 1978 BV Private Reserve ($13.75)) Well now, twenty years later, the dollar is quite weak, some California wineries are still raising their prices, and there are still bargains galore from all over the world. This newsletter is full of superb values including all 2001 and 2002 Bordeaux wines, the 2001 German wines, and the myriad of Spanish and Aussie wines at under $15. Also, throw in a ton of great bubblies, California gems, and Italian values. In short, no matter what the economic conditions are, it s always a buyer s market when it comes to buying fine wine from K&L! The quality of the wine available these days is magnificent. Our club members have been taking advantage of the steep discounts offered through our clubs to reorder selections from their monthly shipments. As many of you know, there are tremendous values available these days due to a variety of factors, but there is also a lot of inexpensive wine that is not very good. The wines that have been receiving public attention because of their price point of $1.99 may be inexpensive, however, in my opinion, they are very undistinguished. The vast production of these wines indicates that the grape sources are varied and this generally leads to significant bottle variation. In other words, the wine from a bottle of a case made early in the production may contain grapes from a completely different source than those found in a wine from the one and a half millionth case made. While these wines may have their place in the market, we don t feel that you can learn anything from them. We continue to find the best values for our club members, as well as find wines of interest and high quality from around the world. We all spend a lot of time searching out the great wines and great wine deals. It sure is nice to kick back, take a few deep breaths and drink some of them. I really enjoy the summer months, serving wine out-of-doors at parties, or just savoring a quiet glass of chilled Sancerre (2001 Franck Millet, of course, at 10.99). The relaxing atmosphere with family and friends always accelerates the fun, and the number of bottles tasted! I like to serve my guests a wide array of wines, and my next gathering will go something like this: For starters, it s the above-mentioned Millet Sancerre. Pure strong sauvignon blanc, no wood, very limey and crisp, lovely balance, the wine really shines. Once everyone is at the table, we serve a very small, slightly chilled pour of sauternes in a small glass to start the meal Suduiraut Sauternes ($29.99) will be perfect, sweet and lush, to go with the foie gras on toast. The white wine glasses are ready to go, and after a quick move to the barbecue, the jumbo shrimp is served with a chilled bottle of Château Bouscaut Blanc ($15.99) from the fantastic 1998 vintage in the Graves. The wine is in full expression of its richly styled Semillon, with tart green apple from sauvignon blanc and a round, creamy feel from the oak. With the mixed grill of veggies, sausages, chicken, and beef, I make my guest work a bit. Everyone wants to taste what s hot, so I m going to splash tasting size pours of two newly arrived 2000 Bordeaux. First, will be the forward and fruity style of Château Bois Martin, Graves. Made by our friend Anthony Perrin, the owner of Château Carbonnieux, it s fresh and effusive, with strawberry and cherries on the palate, So very tasty for $16.99; it is already a big hit. My next wine needs no introduction. To celebrate the 2000 vintage, the picture of the Comtesse herself Virginie Comtesse de Lalande, who had the Château built in 1840 now adorns the label and the capsule is golden Reserve de la Comtesse ($24.99) drew absolute rave reviews at the tasting bars in May. This wine will not last long, so buy it ASAP, taste one bottle and stick the rest in the cellar Château Bernadotte ($14.99) will carry us through the rest of the main course at a relaxing pace. Owned and managed by Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, it is the same style wine, soft, round and delicious and made to drink young. With the peach/pear tarte we bring back our old pal 1999 Suduiraut for another splash. Then it s wave goodbye and good night. Ralph Sands 2000 Waterford Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa ($21.99) 2001 Kevin Arnold Shiraz Waterford Estate, Stellenbosch, South Africa ($32.99) The Waterford Estate is located in the Helderberg mountain range in the Stellenbosch, and is owned by the Ord and Arnold families. Kevin Arnold, is the winemaker who worked at Delheim for 9 years and Rust en Vrede for 10 years, efforts that earned him wines in the Wine Spectator s Top 100 three years in a row. The Waterford is 100% cabernet that spends 17 months in 55% French and 45% American oak and has a bouquet that sings with dark plum and currants, with notes of violet and pencil lead. These elements follow on the palate with very good balance and fine tannins leading to a long finish with a hint of mint and light earthy note. Kevin Arnold makes his own shiraz at the estate, that sees 12 months in 60% American and 40% French oak, and that offers juicy and concentrated black fruits with blueberry high notes framed by toasty oak Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia ($19.99) With all the boutique wineries that exist, you sometimes can over look the big boys, but you have to hand it to Penfolds for the incredible range of wines they offer. The bin numbers are wines that are moderately priced, with the exception of the Bin 707, which is at a higher price. Well, in 2000 there was no Bin 707 made and it seems some of the juice has made its way into the Bin 407. The nose shows ripe red currant and mulberry with notes of cedar, tobacco, chocolate and mint. On the palate there is good acidity with fine tannins and very good length Hill of Content Grenache-Shiraz, Clare Valley-McLaren Vale, Australia (Inquire) Here s a great value made from 83% grenache from the Clare Valley and 17% shiraz from McLaren Vale. This wine shows the classic character of these two grape varieties with the grenache offering effusive aromatics of ripe black raspberry with white pepper notes and the shiraz adding dark plum and berry giving backbone to the structure. 6 Trey s Corner! True or false: Caymus Vineyards currently produces pinot noir. Answer: True. They do make a pinot noir but it s not under the Caymus label. The 2001 Belle Glos Pinot Noir ($29.99) represents the first release of pinot noir from Caymus in over 10 years. Belle Glos fruit comes from a 75-acre vinyard in the Santa Maria Valley. The vineyard is on a west facing slope just 13 miles from the ocean, which helps create fruit with elegance, balance and crisp acidity. Planted in 1972, yeilds are kept very low (1.6 tons per acre) and the berries are very small and concentrated. This wine is fresh, lively, silky and delicate. The 60% new oak gives the wine just a hint of oak and spice. Be on the lookout for other releases of pinot noir under this label. If you are a fan of Cabernet than I highly recommend you taste the 1999 Lancaster Estate Alexander Vally Cabernet Sauvignon ($49.99). Lancaster is 100 percent estate-grown fruit from their 53 acre hillside property located at the southern tip of the Alexander Valley. The 1999 is a blend of 59% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvingon and 1% cabernet franc. The 1999 is delicous right now. The high percentage of Merlot gives this wine a fleshy, silky mouth-feel. Flavors include crushed red berries, vanilla, anise, spicy herbs and black currants. On May 29th I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the Quintessa Winery in Napa. Not only can Quintessa make one heck of a Cabernet they can also throw one heck of a party. If you are in Napa this summer I would recommend trying to make an appointment to visit the winery. Since it is July I need to mention at least one white wine. My Chardonnay pick for this month is the 2000 Franciscan Cuvée Sauvage Chardonnay ($27.99). This has always been a favorite of mine. It shows flavors of butterscotch, spice, citrus and vanilla. It s what we call a pool-side sipper! One of my favorites Chehalem 3 Vineyards Pinot Noir, Oregon ($19.99) This wine shows ripe fruit complimented with minerals, sweet herbs and spice. See you in the City, MJ (Michael Jordan) The wine glut pays off! Where are all these great bargains you ve been hearing about? Right here! We ve always taken pride in offering you wine at great prices, but with the excess of wines out there right now, we have even more incredible deals. The 2000 Kalinda Napa Valley Cabernet Franc at $14.95 is a great wine deal. Bright, pure, blueberry, fruit lightly tinged with soft pepper fills the palate and shows how delicious cab franc can be when it is fully ripe. It is like a lush, sweet merlot, with a very long and lingering finish. If you have not experienced ripe cab franc you owe it to yourself to fire up the barbecue and open this beauty. The 2000 Kalinda Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon ($14.99) follows, and it s a fantastic up front, forward, fruity, mouth filler of a cabernet. Juicy, cassis, toasty oak, round and delicious, and worth twice the price. Next you must try the 1999 Kalinda Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($17.99).A world class, super famous Napa cab producer, whose wines sell for triple this, makes this wine. A gorgeous, classy wine, solid and structured, showing all the typical dusty character of Rutherford. With huge amounts of fruit, cassis and black plum, but with the ability to age for 5-10 years. On the syrah front, the 2001 Purisima Canyon Napa Syrah ($12.99) is from another famous winery. This meaty, rich syrah with spicy, intense, blackberry jam fruit, creamy oaky vanilla, and a big, gutsy finish is a huge hit around here. Truly a cult syrah (no kidding) and if you found this under its own label, you would jump at the price. These wines won t last forever so give them a try and see how lucky we are right now. 15 Famous Composers: Ludwig von Barrthoven ( ) This is a history of one of the most famous and influential composers in modern history Ludwig von Barrthoven. Despite an unbelievably lazy streak, he was to compose more than ten thousand works, including nine thousand one note symphonies. The Nine Grand, as these works were known, were performed in one afternoon, setting the Guinness Book of World Records for compositions played in one day. He did not hear the applause of the audience at the finale not because he was deaf that would come later but because the audience was asleep. Barrthoven was many things throughout his life, and was not many things as well. In the early years, his compositions were restrained and somewhat bland, as evidenced by the works Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand (I Want to Hold Your Hand) and L Orgue Accidentalle (the Organ Accident). Probably the most memorable work of this period was Le Cornemuse Faible Mal Accorde (The Weak Out-of-Tune Accordion). The crying in the score was performed by the Vienna Boys Choir after learning they would sing backup to the dreaded instrument. A lover of fine wine, Barrthoven was entranced by the nuances of Pichon-Lalande, in particular the 1989 vintage, which at this stage is showing a bit more cedar, saddle leather, and earthy qualities as the fruit comes into balance. Medium in body with the vanilla and ripe cherry flavors the Château is known for, the wine is perfect now a far cry from the work of Barrthoven, for whom the sophomore jinx had certainly hit. His work suffered as his hearing began to fail, putting him in danger of being both deaf AND dumb. He continued to drink fine wine; the full bodied cabernet profile of the 1983 Latour reminded him of his public persona backward, slow to evolve, slightly dumb early on, but gaining weight and complexity with age. Barrthoven secretly hoped that he could perform as well. His collaboration with Mozart, Le Cloche de Vache Diminue (The Half Diminished Cowbell) was his most adventurous piece during this period. Reduced to sign language, Barrthoven continued to write in this final phase of his life, when the composer finally achieved the greatness that was previously only hinted at. The Excedrin commercial (Barrthoven s Ninth) is certainly the most famous. Little known trivia: Vincent van Gogh was such a fan of Barrthoven that he cut off his OTHER ear and mailed it the composer in the hopes that this would restore Barrthoven s hearing. A postal mishap ended with the ear going to van Gogh s wine-loving girlfriend and a bottle of 1994 Léoville-Las-Cases going to the composer. This at least gave Barrthoven the pleasure of a bold, concentrated wine with ripe black fruits and heady tannins, all in wonderful balance. It also was the origin of the phrase lend me your ear. Van Gogh tried in vain to recover the ear but his girlfriend wouldn t hear of it. Two ears, she said, were better than one. Barrthoven s passing left a larger void than his personality; thousands lined the streets to pay him homage. To this day, accordion jokes still dominate Catskills comedy clubs. He will live forever. Joe Zugelder Jim s Rara Avis July Gems After literally having one of the coldest, wettest springs in recent memory, the weather turned warm two weekends ago on May 24th; and vines in the north coast have responded dramatically with canes seeming to grow three to four inches per day. The first critical stage of this vintage is upon us with the new clusters now beginning to flower. It looks very optimistic, so stay tuned I feel a need to mention that our last shipment of 2001 Kalinda Sauvignon Blanc, Lake County ($7.99) has arrived. Its evolution in the bottle the last several months have made this wonderfully dry, crisp, refreshing, non-oaked white a wine that you need to seriously consider. Its fig- to grapefruit-like characteristics cause it to be the perfect wine to have with shellfish or as a cocktail, which is the way Ebby and I have treated it. (œœœœœœœ) Another great buy is the 1998 Rene Manuel Bourgogne Blanc ($7.99). Produced from vineyards that lie at the base of the Premier vineyards of Meursault, it is rather Meursault-like in its presentation, with a subtle richness backed by firm acid structure and toasty tones, the flavors offer a lovely integration of white peach- to pear-like fruit with just a touch of white blossoms to finish it off. This was meant to sell for $15.99 and should have, except that it was lost in the sea of wine that has accumulated domestically. Keith was able to negotiate a great deal. (œœœœœœœ) From Purisima Canyon, we have one of the best Cabernet deals of the year. The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast ($8.99) is deep ruby in color, provides opulent aromas of cassis to currant fruit underscored by cedary oak. In the mouth, it is full, nicely structured, perfectly balanced between the hint of oak, soft tannins, and deep, warm fruit. The finish seems to last forever. Anderson has informed me that this will be our house red for the month. (llllllllll) One of the best business moves that Clyde and Todd ever made was to hire Greg St Clair a few years ago, not only as our General Manager, but as our guide into a wine area in which we were weak: Italian wines. He has turned us onto, force fed us so much information, and so educated us about the wines of Italy that at times it leaves my little brain spinning. One of his discoveries several years back while on a buying trip to Italy was the wines of Badia di Morrona. The 2000 Sodi del Paretaio Chianti Superiore ($8.99) is a bright, fleshy, well-structured wine that is the perfect wine for any pasta dish, particularly one with a red sauce.
