2 G O O D S T E W A R D S H I P O R G A N IC Organic certifications focus on natural alternatives to synthesized chemical pesticides and herbicides. They utilize both organic substitutes and techniques designed to create an ecosystem that is healthy enough to balance and self-defend. The certifications also provide rules for documenting and maintaining separation between organic grown produce and non-organic grown produce. S U S T A I N A B LE There are many regional certification programs that offer vineyards and wineries the opportunity to become certified sustainable. The focus of all of these programs is to look at the practices that overlap the concerns of being environmentally sound, economically feasible and socially responsible. Whether in the Northwest with LIVE, California with SIP, or Europe with Lutte Raisonee, the goals are the same. Many wineries view everything from the vineyard and winery, to the hiring practices under the microscope of long-term sustainability. This broadview results in best practices that are good for the vines, the wine and the workers. B I O D Y N A M ICS Founded by Rudolf Steiner in 1924, biodynamics is an organic farming method that focuses on the harmony of all levels of the local ecosystem. The system seeks to repair and maintain symbiotic relationships through co-planting beneficial plants, incouraging diverse insect population and applying a prescribed series of organic fertilizers and composts, called preparations. The system also takes into account other influences like lunar cycles to form a calendar for farm activities like planting, pruning and harvesting. B U D B RE A K S Most great ideas start small and grow into something big. The bud break symbol is our attempt to highlight wineries doing forward thinking things that benefit their wines and their community.
