2 2013 Grape King Wes Wiens The Grape Growers of Ontario congratulate Wes Wiens of Wiens Family Farms on being named the 2013 Grape King. Wes was born and raised on a grape and tender fruit farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake where he worked along with his parents and three siblings, learning the value of a dollar as well as gaining the innovative work ethic that has carried his family through the highs and lows of farming. Now married, his wife Briar and their four children continue to farm with Wes family. Together with his brother Gary, his wife Lauren and their parents Abe and Agnes, they have transitioned to focus solely on vineyards. In addition to numerous experimental plots for varietal, clonal and rootstock comparison, the Wiens family vineyards consist of 19 varieties planted on 400 acres which they supply to four local wineries. Whether providing grapes to the wineries they grow for, custom services such as planting, trellising and harvesting, or supplying the Canadian industry with grapevine nursery stock and expertise, the Wiens family has dedicated themselves to providing the highest quality in products and services specifically catered to the Canadian grape and wine industry. 2
3 Industry Updates The Grape Growers of Ontario are participating in a number of federal and provincial government initiatives to assist in strengthening and growing Ontario s grape and wine industry: Modernization of Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) Policies The Grape Growers of Ontario have provided input to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario on the policies that govern the beverage alcohol sector regarding licensing, audit, retail store authorizations, advertising and sampling rules. Our recommendations are focused on helping wineries achieve greater distribution and establish targets for the growth of Ontario wines. Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Food Labelling Modernization Initiative The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is engaged in stakeholder consultations to review and modernize food labelling. The Grape Growers of Ontario have provided comments as part of the consultation process to ensure that consumer expectations of clarity in labelling and content are met. Ontario s Minimum Wage Consultation The Ontario government has appointed an Advisory Panel to examine the current approach to setting minimum wage and provide advice on how the province should determine changes to the minimum wage in the future. As labour represents a significant cost to growers, the Grape Growers of Ontario will be appearing before the Advisory Panel as well as submitting written recommendations as part of the consultation process. Ontario s Path to Jobs and Growth The Grape Growers of Ontario recently participated in a roundtable meeting with the Honourable Charles Sousa, Minister of Finance, regarding Ontario s Path to Jobs and Growth. The Minister is gathering Ontarians views on increasing efficiencies and improving outcomes in public services as the government continues to work to create jobs and economic growth and eliminate the deficit. We Grow the Wines You Love Help Grow Their Place on the Shelf At the Celebrity Luncheon on September 18th, the Grape Growers of Ontario asked our guests to tweet a message of support to grow the market share of Ontario wine and to Put More 100% Ontario Wine on the Shelf. The latest statistics from LCBO show that VQA wine makes up 10.4% of the wine sales in Ontario, ICB/Non-VQA has 30.5% market share and imported wines continue to dominate the market with 59% market share. On September 24th, in an exclusive interview with Paul Bliss, CTV Toronto: Premier Kathleen Wynne says it s time to loosen Ontario s liquor laws in order to get more locally produced beverages into the hands of consumers, and she s keen on starting with Ontario wines. I think having some sort of controlled availability is what we need to look at, absolutely, she said. 3
