1 CORN O.Y. COUNT AND HARVEST INSTRUCTIONS FORM WHEN SPECIFICS B Item 8 Dent Stage When Form-B item 4c is yes and at least 3 ears are code 6 or 7 Harvest the first 5 ears used to determine maturity. Remove the Husks. Place the third and fourth ears in a cloth bag and put the yellow tag on it and put in Yellow Tyvek Envelope. Also place the other three ears in the envelope. Use an UPS label and ship to the National Lab. (St. Louis) B Item # 13, 14 & 15 Harvest E Gleanings When Form-B item 4a or item 4b is yes Within 3 days after the farmer harvests the field Harvest all ears in row 1 of both units. Remove the husks. Weigh all ears #14. Place 3 rd & 4 th ears of Row 1 in separate plastic bags for each unit, complete yellow ID card and UPS in yellow Tyvek Envelope to the National Lab (St. Louis) Collect all ears and pieces of ears inside unit, shell the grain and put in a paper bag labeled shelled grain. Put grain from both units in the same paper bag. Collect all loose grain in row 1 and put in a separate paper bag labeled loose grain. Put grain from both units in the same paper bag. Put bags and Form-E in yellow Tyvek envelope, complete yellow ID card, and UPS to the National Lab (St. Louis)

3 Corn Dent Stage Harvest Procedures WHEN TO HARVEST: 1. ONLY IF you are to complete item #8 on the corn B-Form. 2. If at least 3 of the 5 ears used to determine the maturity of the field are code 6 (Dent) or beyond. WHAT TO HARVEST: The first 5 ears that are at least code 6 (dent), starting with the 5 ears used to determine maturity. Continue harvesting ears, working in the direction away from the unit, until you have 5 ears code 6 or 7. REMEMBER: ONLY 5 EARS BEYOND THE ONE UNIT USED TO DETERMINE MATURITY ARE SENT TO THE LAB, NOT 5 EARS BEYOND BOTH UNITS. HOW TO HARVEST: 1. Completely shuck all 5 ears. 2. Place the 3rd and 4th ears in a cloth bag and place in a YELLOW Tyvek envelope. 3. Place the remaining 3 ears the same Tyvek envelope. 4. Complete the yellow corn ID card including the poid and sample number and check the code 6 box. Make sure the date on the ID card equals the date on the Form B 5. UPS this envelope to the National Lab using the label addressed to: St. Louis.
4 WHEN NOT TO HARVEST: 1. The corn may not be in dent stage during any of your monthly survey periods. In this case, you won t complete the dent stage harvest procedures. 2. The corn may be at the dent stage for more than one month (this is unlikely). If this happens only send item #8 (dent stage) ears to the lab the first time.
5 Form B Item # 13 Harvest Procedures WHEN TO HARVEST: If 3 or more ears are code 7 or the farmer will harvest the field within 3 days. WHAT TO HARVEST: All of the ears in row 1 of both units. HOW TO HARVEST: 1. Completely shuck and tag (wrap with rubber bands) the 3 rd and 4 th ears in row Husk remaining ears in row Weigh all ears from row 1 and record the weight on Form B item # Remove the rubber bands from the 3 rd and 4 th ears. 5. Place the 3rd and 4th ears in row 1 in a separate plastic plastic bag for each unit. It is much easier, especially for larger ears if the ears are placed in the bag so that the ears are parallel to the side of the bag. 6. Complete the yellow corn ID tag including the poid and sample number Be sure to put the date on the ID tag. It must be the same date as it is on the B form. 7. Use the rubber band to attach the tag to the plastic bag. DO NOT put the yellow id tag inside the plastic bag.
6 8. Repeat steps 1-7 for the other unit. 9. Place the 2 plastic bags (one for each unit) inside a YELLOW Tyvek envelope. UPS to the National Lab (St. Louis) Form E - Gleaning Procedures WHEN TO HARVEST: As soon as possible after the farmer harvests the field. WHAT TO HARVEST: All ears and loose grain inside the unit. HOW TO HARVEST: 1. Pick up all ears attached to stalks and all ears with kernels in the middle of rows 1 and Shell and deposit all grain in a paper bag marked shelled grain. 3. Pick up all loose grain in the middle of row 1 only. Deposit this grain in a paper bag marked loose grain. 4. Use the same 2 bags to collect the shelled and loosed grain from the other unit. 5. Note: Don t overfill the paper bags. Also if the corn is very wet, you may need to use plastic bags to eliminate the possible problem of the paper bags bursting inside the Yellow Tyvek envelope. 6. Complete all items of a yellow corn ID tag for each paper bag including the poid, sample and segment number.
7 Be sure to put the date on the ID tag. It must be the same date as it is on the E form. 7. Use a rubber band to attach the tag to each paper bag. 8. Place the 2 paper bags inside a YELLOW Tyvek envelope. Also put one of the yellow mailing tags inside the YELLOW Tyvek envelope. 9. Insert the completed E-form in the YELLOW Tyvek envelope. 10. UPS to the National Lab (St. Louis)
