Quercus muehlenbergii FLOWER: Hairy catkins, with leaves FRUIT: Acorn FOLIAGE: Rounded, dark green, brown in fall. English Oak Quercus robur HEIGHT: FLOWER: Inconspicuous SPREAD: FRUIT: 1 to 2 acorn SHAPE: Broadly ovate to FOLIAGE: 3 to 5 lobes globose, medium texture. rounded, dark green, brown in fall. The species is native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. A stalwart tree has long been cultivated. The trunk tends to be short with furrowed dark gray bark, and the crown is broad and open. Growth rate is slow to moderate, and it is moderately intolerant of shade. Glenleven Littleleaf Linden Tilia cordata Glenleven HEIGHT: FLOWER: Creamy yellowluster, 2-3 SPREAD: FRUIT: ¼ tan globes SHAPE: Pyramidal, conical FOLIAGE: Dark, shiny green. A dense broad pyramidal form does well under city conditions. The foliage turns golden-yellow in autumn. A fine tree for street, or home use. Hedge Maple Acer campestre HEIGHT: FLOWER: Green, inconspicuous SPREAD: FRUIT: 1 Samara SHAPE: Rounded FOLIAGE: Dark green Used extensively as a street tree where power lines prohibit use of taller trees. Excellent drought tolerance. The bright yellow fall foliage leads into exposure of corky stems for winter interest.

The crown form is symmetrical and dense when young, later becoming arching. High resistance to Dutch elm disease and phloem necrosis (elm yellows), pleasing form, vigorous growth, and tolerance of urban stresses. *Hop-Hornbeam aka Ironwood Ostrya virginina Height: Spread: Shape: Small, Rounded to Conical Flower: With leaves Fruit: Cluster, resembling hops Foliage: Yellowish green, turning yellow in Autumn Small tree that is shade tolerant and very slow-growing. Handsome foliage and form for lawn or park plantings. Shademaster Honeylocust Glediasia Triacanthos HEIGHT: FLOWER: Inconspicuous SPREAD: FRUIT: Produces a few pods infrequently SHAPE: Broadly ovate to FOLIAGE: Deep dark green, persists irregularly vase-shaped, late in fall, turning yellow-green fine texture A seedling selected in New Jersey, it was introduced in A vigorous grower with a straight trunk and graceful ascending branches. Of considerable ornamental value, due to its wide site tolerance, very lustrous foliage, and bright red foliage in autumn. Greenspire Littleleaf Linden Tilia cordata Greenspire Height: Flower: Creamy yellow Spread: Fruit: 1/4 tan globes Shape: Pyramidal Foliage: Glossy, dark green A rapid grower with a narrow, oval head and straight trunk. Excellent for street, or home planting. *Kentucky Coffetree Height: Spread: Shape: Narrow, pyramidal Gymnocladus dioicus Flower: Greenish white Fruit: Legume Foliage: Light green, yellowish green leaflets Shade intolerant; relatively fast-growing. Planted as an ornamental tree in parks and cemeteries and as a street tree. Hardy in southern Michigan and free from insects and diseases. Free of serious insect and disease pests. Crimson King Maple Height: Spread: Shape: Broadly oval, rounded Acer Crimson King Flower: Maroon-yellow Fruit: 2 samara Foliage: Purplish red leaf throughout summer, turns darker or brown in fall Similar to Schwedler Maple, but has a straighter growing form and more vigor. It has a strong, upright head with brilliant red foliage in spring, which matures to a dark green, turning golden-yellow in autumn. Northern Red Oak Quercus rubra northern Height: Flower: Inconspicuous Spread: Fruit: ¾ to 1 acorns Shape: Broadly ovate, somewhat Foliage: 5 to 8, bright, or open, medium texture golden brown in fall A stately, fast growing tree native to moist sites in the eastern half of the U.S., extending into Canada, but not the deep south. Dark gray bark, smooth at first, becomes furrowed with age. Moderately intolerant of shade. This sturdy tree can be used in lawns and parks, and as a street tree, where space is adequate. It tolerates urban conditions along streets with heavy traffic. *Pin Oak Quercus palustris Height: Flower: Spring with leaves Spread: Fruit: Acorn Shape: Oblong-cylindrical, or Foliage: Dark green, turning bright Pyramidal crown red in autumn Shade-intolerant; moderately fast growing.
