L adies and Gentlemen, Spring has sprung, and its time now, after this intense winter, to get back into the swing of honoring our Confederacy! Our first big endeavor was the Lee- Jackson Celebration hosted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans Sterling Price Camp 676. At 11:00am, Saturday January 26th, we met with our family in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Military Order of Stars and Bars at the Village Inn in Castle Rock, Colorado and celebrated the two most famous representations of our culture. This years theme was Virginia and Tennessee. We enjoyed Confederate Bingo, door prizes, silent auctions, Virginia ham, and of course presentations on our Confederacy! Colorado Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Way to go Sir Luke! F l a g R i d e On March 5, 2019, the R.M.C.C. members in attendance held the fourth annual Confederate Flag Day Flag Ride. There were five drivers in attendance, all bearing Confederate Flags. In front, the R.M.C.C. car was flying a "Heritage Not Hate" Battle Flag. Next, we had a truck flying two Third National Flags, also known as the "Blood Stained Banner." Third was a truck flying the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, as well as Quantrill s flag. After that was a friend of ours who was showing two window mounted battle flags and finally was a truck flying the Battle Flag and the United States flag. At 1:43, we pulled in to the Pagosa Springs Fairgrounds, completing our ride. After the ride, we met at the Lost Cajun ( and had some of the best Cajun food in Colorado. S o u t h e r n c r o s s After the Flag Ride, we were presented with a Southern Cross grave marker (see below), allegedly obtained at a yard sale near Mount Calm, Texas. We have started the quest to find the grave that it was taken from. Efforts are under way to make contact with the Texas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans for further investigations. It is our first goal to see this marker back in its rightful place. In the event that the grave from which it was taken cannot be located, I would like to see it placed in Texas in some way dedicated to either the unknown Confederate soldiers or removed memorials, neither of which will be forgotten. 6 P a g e 6 R M C C Q u a r t e r l y Divinity This is a very old candy and a family favorite. Please note: this recipe is for high altitude, ~6500ft INSTRUCTIONS: INGREDIENTS: 2 2/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon vanilla 2/3 cup light corn syrup 2 egg whites 2/3 cup broken nuts Stir sugar, corn syrup and water together over low heat until sugar dissolves. Cook with little stirring to 247 degrees F on candy thermometer or until hard ball stage. In the time of the War for Southern Independence, candy thermometers were very rare and the water test was the most common way of telling if your candy had reached hard ball. Drop small amounts of the candy mixture into very cold water. When mix forms a hard ball, it is ready. Using an old style wire paddle (see Chrystal s here) or mixer, beat egg white until stiff peaks form. Continue beating while pouring hot syrup in a thin stream into egg whites. Add vanilla and beat until mixture holds its shape and becomes slightly dull. Mixture may become too stiff for mixer. Fold nuts in with spoon. Drop mixture from tip of buttered spoon onto wax paper. Divinity will not set up if nuts are added before candy is stiff. For best results, make early morning or on days when the humidity is high.

V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 3 P a g e 7 Blackbird pie INGREDIENTS: Twelve to a fifteen Blackbirds Half a pound of Bacon or ham Half a pound of Liver One Onion A handful of chopped field mushrooms Salt

Bone and clean the blackbirds, boil in pot about 1 hour with salt, pepper and 1 cup of vinegar.

7 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 3 P a g e 7 Blackbird pie INGREDIENTS: Twelve to a fifteen Blackbirds Half a pound of Bacon or ham Half a pound of Liver One Onion A handful of chopped field mushrooms Salt and Pepper One quart of Brown Sauce ( Pie crust INSTRUCTIONS: Grease and line a pint and a half pudding basin with a good pie crust. Bone and clean the blackbirds, boil in pot about 1 hour with salt, pepper and 1 cup of vinegar. Rinse in cold water, retain 1 quart of broth, stuff each one with liver (of a paste-like consistency), wrap each blackbird up in a thin strip of bacon or ham, season each piece with pepper and salt, garlic and a dab of butter. Put some pieces of bacon or ham in the bottom of the basin, put the rolled-up birds in neatly, sprinkle over the top with chopped onion and mushrooms, pour in the Brown Sauce. If there is no Brown Sauce on hand, the quart of broth may be used. In sauce pot, add 1 cup flower sifted together and bring to boil, add to pie through a strainer, if desired add more garlic, salt and pepper and season to taste. Fill in with any pieces of bacon or left over ham. Wet round the edges, put on the top crust, cut 3 slits for to vent and bake 25 to 35 min or until golden brown.
