1 Isaiah 58:6 King James Version (KJV) 6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? THE DANIEL FAST: FOOD LIST & RECIPES Daniel 10:3-13 New International Version (NIV) 3 I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; (A) and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over. 4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank (B) of the great river, the Tigris, (C) 5 I looked up (D) and there before me was a man dressed in linen, (E) with a belt of fine gold (F) from Uphaz around his waist. 6 His body was like topaz, (G) his face like lightning, (H) his eyes like flaming torches, (I) his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, (J) and his voice (K) like the sound of a multitude. 7 I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, (L) but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves. 8 So I was left alone, (M) gazing at this great vision; I had no strength left, (N) my face turned deathly pale (O) and I was helpless. (P) 9 Then I heard him speaking, and as I listened to him, I fell into a deep sleep, my face to the ground. (Q) 10 A hand touched me (R) and set me trembling on my hands and knees. (S) 11 He said, Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, (T) consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, (U) for I have now been sent to you. And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. 12 Then he continued, Do not be afraid, (V) Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble (W) yourself before your God, your words (X) were heard, and I have come in response to them. (Y) 13 But the prince (Z) of the Persian kingdom resisted me twentyone days. Then Michael, (AA) one of the chief princes, came to help me, because I was detained there with the king of Persia. 9 The Daniel Fast Diet Daniel Fast and Daniel's Diet You can do the Daniel Fast for spiritual breakthrough! In 1997, when I was preaching in a church in Kentucky about our ministry in Africa, I learned about The Daniel Fast. Share it with your friends! DanielDietFast.com Our goal to help you better understand and apply the Daniel Fast. God will use Daniel's Diet to help you experience spiritual breakthrough, healing and more of God's power in prayer. You will find Rev. Towns' version of Daniel's Fast very helpful to you for physical and spiritual breakthrough. Some practical advantages to fasting like Daniel include: re-evaluating your life, identifying with those who are poor, losing weight, worshipping God, breaking bad habits, growing closer to God, family and friends, learning self-control, purifying your body and soul, and repenting of sin. The Christian's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Co 6:19 "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit in you, whom you have of God? And you are not your own." Therefore, we must take good care of our bodies. Many common diseases are easily prevented with good nutrition and exercise. Caution! The Daniel Fast Diet, like any other fast, can create problems for people with medical conditions, pregnant, nursing and/or taking medicine. Consult your doctors and/or pharmacist before starting any fast. Ask them about instructions for your medication while fasting. Seven tips for observing a Daniel Fast or Daniel's Diet 1. Be specific Daniel was very clear in his objection to the Babylonian diet. He defined his objection immediately. Daniel 1:8 The king s food was likely not kosher, against Jewish dietary laws. a. Daniel and his friends had vowed against wine. b. The king s food could have been offered up to idols or demons. Write out and sign a commitment that outlines 1.Why you are fasting. 2.How long you are fasting. 3.From what you are fasting. 2. Daniel fasted as a spiritual commitment The Daniel Fast involves a spiritual commitment to God. "Daniel proposed in his heart that he would not defile himself." Daniel 1:8 Ask for the Holy Spirit s guidance! 3. Daniel reflected inner desire by external discipline Most people desire better health, but don't discipline themselves to say no to junk food, and other unhealthy foods. Our physical health is more than answered prayer. Our physical health is normally linked to many of these factors: a. Your food choices.

10 b. The level of your spiritual commitment, as reflected in constant prayer during the diet of Daniel and his friends. c. Your time commitment. If you determine to fast for a certain time, keep it. For example, if you determine to fast ten days, don't stop on day nine. d. Your testimony commitment. Your fast is a statement of faith in God. You want God to heal your body. Faith is foundational to the Daniel Fast. 4. James prayed to see the role of sin in your relative health or sickness Read James 5:13-20 KJV James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Observations: Our actions and attitudes are vital. James said, "are there any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms." James 5:13 The sick person must call for the elders. James 5:14 Sin is something related to the cause of sickness. James 5:15 Lack of health or healing may be the result of spiritual rebellion. James 5:15 Lack of health or healing may be due to sin of wrong consumption, i.e. poor diet, drugs, pornography. James 5:15 Repentance is linked to health. James 5:16 Prayer alone may not gain healing, faith in God is the major factor. James 5:15, John Piper says in A Hunger for God, "Fasting is God s testing ground-and healing ground." 5. Daniel fasted as a statement of faith to others Daniel made a statement of faith when he asked to eat only vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then Daniel asked the overseer to compare the appearance of the 4 sons of Israel with the other people who ate the king s food. 6. Learn the effects of the food you eat What makes some food good for us? What makes other food bad for our bodies? What are the negative effects of foods do to our bodies? If we answer these questions, there would certainly be some foods we would never want to eat again. 7. Daniel yielded all results to God Daniel said, as you see fit, deal with your servants. Daniel 1:13 We can't know if Daniel or his friends ever again ate King Nebuchadnezzar s questionable food. In Daniel 10 we find a different 21 day Daniel Fast. It seems to imply that Daniel ate meat and drank wine again. We don't know if they were from King Belshazzar's table. Daniel 10:2-3 In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. (3) I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. As Elmer Towns says,

11 "Fasting for an answer is similar to prayer. Sometimes you can pray once in an act of faith, and God hears and answers. On other occasions you must continuously ask in faith before an answer will come. We need to pray often and fast continually to build up our faith and our spiritual character." A Year 2011 application of Daniel's Fast or Diet This Daniel Fast is not exactly the same as Daniel's original Fast or Diet. This Daniel Fast will lead to spiritual insight. As for these four boys, God gave them knowledge and skill. (Daniel 1:17) This Daniel Fast is longer than one day. These young men fasted for at least ten days. (Daniel 1:12, 15) This Daniel Fast is a partial fast. Daniel and his friends ate only vegetables and drank only water. (Daniel 1:12) We will allow more to eat than they did for various reasons. This application of a Daniel Fast requires abstinence from party or junk foods. Have a great Daniel Fast! Be careful as you break your fast. You don't want to shock your system with too much fat or sweets after going without! You might get a stomachache or headache. Food guidelines for observing your 2010 Daniel Fast or Diet You have freedom in this Daniel Fast to modify it according to your personal physical and spiritual needs. You can modify these instructions as you feel led by the Lord. If you feel that it would be more productive for you spiritually or physically to avoid certain foods or spices, that would be great. If you feel led by the Lord to eat only vegetables and drink only water, then do so! 1. The main thing is to decide ahead of time how you are going to apply the Daniel Fast. Then stick to your commitment for the length of time you have decided to fast. Some people feel that it is good to make a permanent lifestyle change to the Daniel Fast. Daniel didn't do his "fast" for a limited amount of time. It was his lifestyle. Daniel asked for permission to avoid the kings delicacies over a ten day period. Then, if he was still healthy looking, he could continue his "diet." 2. Daniel's reason for his "diet" are given in Daniel 1:8 The Message Bible "But Daniel determined that he would not defile himself by eating the king's food or drinking his wine, so he asked the head of the palace staff to exempt him from the royal diet." Daniel Diet Foods to Eat Daniel seemed to eat only things planted for harvest and drank only water. You may want to keep it simple and eat only vegetables and drink only water. If in doubt about a certain kind of food, read the guidelines to clarify the instructions for Daniel's Fast! Send us your ideas of additional instructions, foods to eat, recipes, and menus to add to this page. Remember that your food lists of foods to eat or avoid do not need to be the exactly the same as someone else's food list. If you are a pastor or leader of a group that is doing a corporate Daniel Fast, please encourage those with physical limitations to modify your group's Daniel Diet food list according to their personal limitations. We encourage you to have a loving and Christian attitude toward those who have a Daniel Diet food list that seems too easy to you. Basically, you want to avoid the King's food. By application, that means that we are avoiding all those things that the Jews couldn't eat. We're also avoiding foods that only royalty in ancient days could afford. It wasn't until recent history that most Americans could afford to eat meat or poultry. In most of the world today, very few people can afford to eat any kind of meat or processed foods, like the following items to avoid. Meat, because Daniel didn't want to take the chance of eating non-kosher food and/or meat that was offered to idols. white flour and all products using it white rice, white bread, hominy and pasta fried foods foods or drinks with caffeine carbonated beverages, including diet sodas Wine, beer or any other alcoholic drinks foods containing preservatives or additives refined sugar (see some substitutes) high fructose corn syrup chemical sugar substitutes margarine, shortening, animal fat, high fat products

22 Prayers, Meditation, and Study Tools You will want to gather some study helps so that you are prepared for our fast. Here are a few ideas that may trigger some ideas. 1. Read the Book of Daniel. It s full of devotion for the Lord, prophesy for the future, and life lessons for today. 2. Faith Study. Use a concordance and look up scriptures that include the word faith. Choose a verse or passage and meditate on it, allowing the Holy Spirit to teach you. Then spend a few minutes writing in your Journal. 3. Conduct a Google search using this phrase: Andrew Murray public domain then select one of the books to use as a study. A great work is Absolute Surrender which would serve as a powerful study for your fasting experience. Andrew Murray is one of the great teachers of God s Word. 4. Each day, write a short note to a friend, family member or whoever the Lord brings to your mind. This doesn t have to be a long note, but just a few words of friendship and appreciation. 5. Do an in-depth study on forgiveness and work through some of the wounds that may still cause pain in your life. Use this fasting period to purify your heart of bitterness, pain, anger, and resentment that you may have. Pastor and Bible teacher R.T. Kendall has two excellent books on Total Forgiveness. One centers on forgiving others and the second book is on forgiving yourself. 6. Go to the Daniel Fast website where more devotional ideas are posted. Jesus gives us salvation... but He wants us to move on to transformation! This Daniel Fast can be a transforming time for you! The Lord rewards those who diligently seek Him! Give your attention and time to the Lord and He will reward you! The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit Revised Edition Page Susan Gregory

But most of all I hope you draw closer to God than you ever have before and that you experience His presence. The Lord longs for His people to develop deep, intimate relationships with Him. A fast is a biblically supported and God ordained way to come into communion with the Lord. The first many pages of this document are to introduce you to the Daniel Fast. I hope you find the information useful and handy as you prepare for these days of spiritual discipline. This information is not exhaustive and you will find many other resources at the Daniel Fast site and the Daniel Fast Blog. The last pages of this document are the actual Daniel Fast Journal. You might find it most helpful to keep the pages in a 3-ring binder or a file folder. You will want to keep them together and easily accessible for your daily quiet time. Take a look at one of the pages and you will see that you can use it to log several details of your fast including the fast day, the date, your food intake for every meal, and snack times, and your weight if you want to track that. You can also check off the number of glasses of water you drink. The most important part of each page is the place for personal thoughts and reflections. This is where you can record your experience, note prayers or answered prayer, document revelations that the Lord gives you and even your emotions as you walk through the fast days. If you don t already have a daily quiet time, I hope using this Journal will serve as a catalyst to developing a new habit in your spiritual walk. My daily quiet time has revolutionized my walk with the Lord. The supernatural power of God will meet you, if you give Him the time and place in your life! I encourage you to save your Personal Journal pages so that you can look back at them in the future, perhaps the next time you fast or when you realize God has manifested one of your prayer requests. The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit Revised Edition Page Susan Gregory

24 Be blessed on your fast. I hope the very best for you! I communicate with thousands of men and women from around the world. They send me powerful testimonies of the great benefits and blessings they have received during their time of prayer and fasting. I too have had amazing experiences when I humble myself and dedicate a period of time to the Lord with prayer and fasting, My prayer for you is that you too will experience the amazing love of God and His powerful grace as you too set yourself apart for this wonderful spiritual experience. The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26 The Daniel Fast for the Body, Soul and Spirit Revised Edition Page Susan Gregory
