A 3,000-year old amphora, which was discovered near the city, is considered the earliest indicator of beer brewing on German soil. The amphora is on display at Kulmbach s Bavarian Brewery museum. As in other cities, brewing beer in the medieval city of Kulmbach was neither handcraft nor commerce, but an exclusive privilege. But it can be assumed that brewing was already considerably more important in Kulmbach at that time than it was in other places. This archetypical specialty beer convinces with its characteristically fine malty aroma and the beautiful dark color. A Little Story of EKU Schwarzbier Until the start of the 20th century, more or less all types of beer were dark. The reason for this was that at the time it was a technical challenge (nearly impossible) to brew a sound beer using only light, shorter kilned malt. Light beers were not introduced until very late. EKU s»black one«has a deep, dark color, a malty aroma, and a full-bodied taste. 8 14 15 EKU s Wheat Beer presents itself as fresh, fruity, and very aromatic. During the brewing process 70% of carefully roasted wheat malt is combined with 30% of the finest barley malt. A Little Story of EKU Weißbier Today, wheat beer the name originates from»white«not»wheat«is considered a typical summer beer. It should be enjoyed cool, but not ice-cold. This is also why it is served in especially tall, slender glasses so that the tiny beads of carbonation continue to rise up through the drink and keep it fresh-tasting for as long as possible. With the help of the brewery s own cultivated top-fermenting yeast the malt sugar is converted into alcohol and carbon dioxide. 10 18 19 The Kulmbacher Beer Week The fact that beer is evident to anyone when attending Kulmbacher Beerweek also known as»kulmbach s fifth season.«for more than 60 years, beer alone has taken the spotlight in Kulmbach for nine whole days. Starting every year on the last Saturday in July. Over 100,000 visitors annually make the pilgramage to the festival tent, also lovingly referred to as»city«, to celebrate with traditional music and dancing on the benches. The four festival beers brewed especially for Beer Week one for each corner of the beer tent allow every beer lover to chose to theier liking.
