Oils of Ancient Scripture General Tips as You Begin Be sure to introduce yourself and the class, even if you think everyone already knows. How long will the class be and what can the participant expect? If the room is small enough, have everyone introduce themselves with their name, where they are from, and a fun fact. Be sure to pause and ask for questions regularly throughout the class. If you do not know an answer, say so, and ask if anyone in the audience knows. If people are falling asleep, make them stand up and move around. Ask them to teach each other and get them chatting. Feel free to adapt the language to make it sound more like you! All of the verses in this presentation are currently in King James Version of the Bible. You may feel free to update to any version you prefer and that is easier to read. Suggested font is Raleway to help you consistent with the rest of the presentation. Dr. Elmore does not profess to be a Biblical scholar. There will be some of you with much more ancient scriptural knowledge than she has. Please reach out if you find better ways of explaining or updates to the text you suggest. Essential Rewards Meeting Prep Order Oils of Ancient Scripture Kit Joy Essential Oil Cinnamon Bark Vitality Agave Nectar V6 Vegetable Complex Preparations Cinnamon Roasted Pecans 2 TBSP Coconut sugar 2 TBSP Agave Nectar syrup, pure 1/2 tsp Cinnamon, ground 1/4 tsp Salt 2 tsp Coconut oil, plus more for greasing pan 2 cups Pecan, unsalted halves Instructions: 1. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and grease with coconut oil. Set aside. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together coconut sugar, agave nectar, cinnamon essential oil, and salt.

3. In a large, nonstick skillet over medium-low heat, add coconut oil and sugar mixture. Stir until melted and smooth. 4. Add pecans and increase heat to medium, stirring until pecans are thoroughly coated. Continue stirring occasionally, adjusting heat as necessary to avoid burning. Cook approximately 3-5 minutes, or until candied. 5. Pour pecans onto the prepared baking sheet, creating an even layer. Set baking sheet on a cooling rack. Allow to cool for 1 hour before consuming Compliance Tips This class is simple to keep compliant as the focus is more on the lessons and scripture than disease claims. It is important to not make disease claims that are found within texts. Some people do sometimes ask questions about diseases directly, and just be sure to redirect these. Slide 1 Thank you so much for coming to learn more about Young Living products. Tonight, we will be here for about an hour, and we will be reviewing Essential Oils that are mentioned in ancient scripture. My name is XXX and I am a XXX leader with Young Living. [Share personal stories: Why did you decide to teach this class? When did you first start researching this topic? Why does it interest you? If you re comfortable sharing, what is your religious background, and what is your definition of God today?]. Slide 2 The information in this presentation is based on the work of Dr. David Stewart. His book Healing Oils of the Bible. You too can get this book from Amazon or from Life Science Publishing. Slide 3 There are 33 special of essential oils and aromatic plants mentioned in the bible, and approximately 1000 references to anointing oils, incense, ointments, spices, perfumes, odors, aromas, fragrances, or sweet savors. The sense of smell is special because it can quickly and easily interact with ancient sections of the brain. The limbic system helps to govern our emotions, consciousness, and hormones. Slide 4

Some people even state that God was likely the first aromatherapist, because the place that he designed for man was a garden to live in. [Read verse] Slide 5 One of the first mentions that we see of essential oils is in Genesis. This is a powerful story of forgiveness, repentance and love. Joseph is the most beloved child of Jacob and his brothers hate him because of it. They cast him into a pit with the intention to kill him. Instead of that, they decide to sell him into slavery in exchange for scented materials spicery, balm, and myrrh. Years go by and Joseph finds favor with Pharaoh and rises from slave to second in line only to the king. A feminine then hits and his brothers are starving and must travel to the capital to ask to buy food. When they arrive, they offer to pay with honey, spices, myrrh, nuts and almonds. What they don t realize is that they are treating with their brother who they no longer recognize. This story demonstrates the power of essential oils and resins as both an economic entity and a symbol that what goes around comes around. Joseph s brothers must beg him for forgiveness before they are able to buy the foods they need. Slide 6 While the Joy essential oil blend is not mentioned in the Bible, it is always nice to remember that we are deeply blessed to have essential oils. Let me demonstrate how to inhale an essential oil. First, it only takes one drop of essential oil to make a big difference. Take one drop into your palm, and then rub your palms together to heat up the oil a big and help it rise into the air. Cover your face and mouth with your hands, taking care to avoid the eye area, and take a big deep breath in. [Pass around Joy essential oil.] Slide 7 [As you pass the Joy essential oil, read the passage]. Ask follow up questions, what does the oil smell like to you? What does it remind you of? You could mention that the triggering of these memories may be in direct relation to the limbic system activating.] Slide 8

What are a few ways that essential oils were used in the Bible. We have already mentioned as essences, balms, currencies, and more. Let s highlight a few uses here. Slide 9 First, we have as an incense. Incense is a gum, spice, or other substance that is burned for the sweet smell it produces. This image is highly reminiscent of ceremonies in the Catholic church that are still used today. [Read verse and offer any commentary.] Slide 10 [I typically don t read this entire verse, but you can adapt or read in its entirety.] God also instructs Moses to create the Holy Anointing Oil by combining myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, and olive oil. Slide 11 According to Dr. Stewart the best estimate to match the original recipe is the recipe up top with 28 drops of myrrh and cassia and 14 drops of cinnamon and calamus all combined in a gallon olive oil. This is a lot of essential oils blend for one household and it is more dilute than what most people use these days. So here is an adapted recipe that can be more easily used in a reasonable amount of time. Slide 12 So, what essential oils are in the Oils of Ancient Scripture Kit? Slide 13 Well, we have aloes (also known as sandalwood), cassia, cedarwood, cypress, frankincense, hyssop, myrrh, myrtle, onycha, and Rose of Sharon (also known as cistus. Let s dig into each of these individually. Slide 14 After the crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea is nervous and fearful of what the Jews may with Jesus s body. He goes to Pilate and pleads for the body. And Nicodemus comes and brings approximately 100lbs of a mixture of myrrh and sandalwood to use in the preservation process. Even today, this is a very pricey gift, and may show the reverence that Nicodemus had for Jesus [Pass around Aloes] Slide 15

Slide 16 Cinnamon and cassia are two species of the same plant genus, and they are in the same family as Bay Laurel. They have a very similar aroma, and very similar risks. These can be very hot on the skin. As we pass this one around, I encourage you to simply inhale the aroma instead of using a drop. If you happen to touch your nose, I have carrier oil if it feels too hot on the skin. Great to place on the bottoms of the feet, especially during the winter months. Slide 17 Slide 18 Cedarwood may be one of the first essential oils ever distilled, and it is on record as being distilled more than 5000 years ago. Priests would anoint the right ear, right thumb, and right toe which are now known to be emotional release reflexology points that help us to purge fears. Because of the high concentration of sesquiterpenes, cedarwood is exceptionally good at inspiring mental focus and calm. For some people this oil is instant sleep and for others it is great for study time. This may be why it was so commonly used as a building wood in the Bible. It was used as a primary building material for Solomon s temple. My favorite way to use this oil is in my hair, and it makes a great beard oil for men too. [Pass around cedarwood.] Slide 19 Slide 20 Cypress is an essential oil made from very durable wood that was commonly used as building material in ancient times. The doors of the St. Peter s Basilica were carved from cypress wood and are still in excellent shape today. It is a mix of monoterpenes. The aroma is milder than most tree oils like balsam fir or spruce. This oil is crisp and bright version of a tree oil. [Pass around cypress.]

Slide 21 Slide 22 Probably the biggest rock star and the most recognized essential oils in the Bible. It is referenced as a universal oil, even in ancient Egypt there is a saying that very roughly translates to good for everything from head to toe. Referenced 22 times in the bible. Still widely diffused in churches and a key ingredient in spiritual practice. The aroma of frankincense is balsamic, woodsy, and earthy, and I love to include it in my skin care routine. [Pass around frankincense.] Slide 23 Slide 24 Hyssop is a very purgative essential oil. It is used in practices and rituals. Branches of hyssop were dipped in lamb s blood and spread at Passover. Hyssop branches were also found at the site of crucifixion and hyssop branches were used to extend sour wine to Jesus during his death. This oil can have a safety cap, and I have seen bottles without them. Though hyssop is not hot on the skin, it is irritating to some people s skin. It also brings with it an intense emotional experience that can be too much for some people. Use caution if you have very sensitive skin or if you aren t ready for the effects. [Pass around hyssop.] Slide 25 This is a verse that David writes after he lays with Bathsheba. Slide 26 Myrrh is a very important oil throughout the Bible, and it is in fact the first and last essential oil in the body. It was used in the holy anointing oil and the holy incense. It was also given to Jesus both at his birth and at his death, and was used to anoint

his body after death, so it was an oil that was very pivotal oil that he likely used on his skin, in his home. Slide 27 Myrrh is an essential oil that is very sticky to the skin, and this allows it to hold other essential oils in solution. Some say this is evidence that God intended for oils to be blended together into blends. There is further evidence of this in God s mandates to Moses to make blends of oils to act as holy ointments and anointing oil. [Pass around myrrh.] Slide 28 [Read verse. Please be aware that this verse refers to a prostitute scenting her bed to lure men into her bed while her husband was out of town. Please select a different verse if you have sensitive ears in the room. If not, people actually love? Ask follow up questions about their opinion on the aroma. Ask for descriptive words.] Slide 29 Another one of Esther s names is Hadassah which means myrtle, and myrtle was probably used to prepare her for her marriage to the king. If is hypothesized that she likely would have had myrtle massaged into her feet for 6 months prior to her marriage, and that it was also a piece of her marriage garments. Myrtle leaves were also used in the Feast of Tabernacles ceremony. [Pass around myrtle.] Slide 30 Slide 31 Onycha (ON-i-Kah or O-neech-a) is an oil that is so thick that it does not pour from the bottle easily. It contains vanillin aldehyde which gives the oil the aroma vanilla, and it was an ingredient in the pure and holy perfume that the Lord commanded Moses to make. [Pass around onycha.]

Slide 32 Slide 33 Rose of Sharon is also known as cistus and the resin of the plant was used by shepherd to plaster onto wounds and cuts on animals. The exact type of plant described in the Bible has been lost to legend, but the rock rose has a sweet honey like aroma that is thought to be the flower mentioned. To me this oil smells so strongly of fireworks. [Pass around Rose of Sharon.] Slide 34 Slide 35 Slide 36 Slides provided by LKE Slide 37 Thank you so much for joining me today for this meeting! My next meeting will be at this time and at that place. I will be around for the rest of the evening to answer questions. If you re not currently a member, and would like to hear more about how to get the oils we discussed today, please talk to the person that invited you here tonight.
