EXPORTS TO JAPAN INCREASING 2016 Peanut Exports have been impressive, with China importing huge volumes of peanuts from the United States. But other markets are also increasing imports of U.S. peanuts; including Japan, which imported 36% more total peanut products by volume for the period January to July 2016 over the same period last year. A group of Japanese buyers will visit Tifton, Georgia September 26-28, 2016 with the goal of seeing the 2016 harvest. APC initiated activities in Japan a few years ago using USDA MAP funds. As part of the program there, APC invites a group of buyers to the United States about every other year for an educational tour. This year, 25 representatives are expected and the group will be led by Mr. Suzuki of Denroku, who is serving as President of the Japan Peanut Association, in addition to his role as President of his company. SUPERMARKET DEMOS HELP INTRODUCE PEANUT BUTTER TO MEXICAN FAMILIES Using USDA s Market Access Promotion funds, APC conducts promotional activities on behalf of the peanut industry around the world. Mexico has consistently been one of the top exports for U.S. peanuts, and 2016 is no exception. Mexican consumers snack on peanuts regularly, and consumption continues to increase. Peanut butter, however, has not been traditionally popular with Mexican families. That seems to be changing, as more and more consumers are trying peanut butter. Messages about diet and health, and the natural portability of peanut butter have helped increase sales across the country. Several peanut butter companies have increased their investment in marketing peanut butter inside Mexico, and APC has supported these efforts in various ways. One way, is by conducting supermarket market demonstrations of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These in-store demos have been underway for the past few years, and help introduce the peanut butter and jelly sandwich to children. The demos are conducted through a partnership with Soriana supermarkets. For the time period January-July 2016, sales of peanut butter to Mexico from the U.S increased 77%. SECRETARY VILSACK APPOINTS PEANUT STANDARDS BOARD MEMBERS Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has appointed three producers and three industry representatives to serve on the Peanut Standards Board. All six members will serve on the board through June 30, Their appointments are effective immediately. Secretary Vilsack selected producer Carl Sanders of Brundidge, Ala., and industry representative Ann D. King of Douglas, Ga., to represent the Southeast Region; producer Jimbo Grissom of Seminole, Texas, and industry representative Shelly Nutt of Lubbock, Texas, to represent the Southwest Region; and producer Lee Swinson of Warsaw, N.C., and industry representative Carl Gray of Courtland, Va., to represent the Virginia-North Carolina Region. USDA encourages board membership that reflects the diversity of the U.S. peanut industry. All eligible women, minorities, veterans and persons with disabili-

ties are encouraged to seek nomination for a seat on the Peanut Standards Board. The Peanut Standards Board is made up of eighteen members representing the Southeast Region, which covers Alabama, Georgia and Florida; the Southwest Region, covering Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico; and the Virginia-North Carolina Region. One third of the board is appointed each year. The Peanut Standards Board is authorized under the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of USDA consults with the board to establish or change quality and handling standards for domestically produced and imported peanuts. For more information about the board and USDA s partnership with the peanut industry, visit usda.gov/rules-regulations/peanut-standards-board or contact the Marketing Order and Agreement Division by phone: (863) USDA APPOINTS SIX NEW MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES TO NATIONAL PEA- NUT BOARD United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently appointed three members and three alternates to serve on the National Peanut Board. The appointees will serve three-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2017, and ending Dec. 31, The members and alternates will be sworn in by USDA at the quarterly National Peanut Board Meeting Dec. 6-7, For Arkansas, Gregory Gill of Walnut Ridge is the reappointed Board member. Gill operates Greg Gill Farms and has been engaged in peanut production most recently for six years. Gill previously grew peanuts with his father from I feel honored to have been selected for the National Peanut Board and I hope that I represent Arkansas well, said Gill. There s a lot of potential for peanuts in Arkansas and I plan to learn what I can to help our state s growers. Gill grows runner peanuts, rice, corn and soybeans. He and his wife Kim have three children, Jennifer, Gary and Nash; sonin-law, Scott; daughter-in-law, Holly; and two grandchildren, Luke and Paige. Gary also operates his own farm. Gill graduated from Highland High School and attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. He is current president of the Arkansas Peanut Growers Association and member of the Arkansas Rice Growers Association. He serves as a member on the Lawrence County School Board, was a former board member of Farm Service, Inc. and the Northeast Arkansas Horse Show Association. In his spare time, Gill enjoys horse showing, snow skiing in Colorado, spending time outdoors and staying active with Nash s sporting events. Gregory Baltz of Pocahontas is the reappointed alternate member. Baltz operates Running Lake Farms and has been growing peanuts for six years. He farms runner peanuts, rice, corn and soybeans. There s been great work done by predecessors to establish peanuts in Arkansas, said Baltz. I m honored that Arkansas has been accepted as a major peanut-producing state and hope we can be a model for the industry. Baltz and his wife Mary Nell have been married for nearly 40 years and have three children: Lewis, a geologist; Clinton, a mechanical engineer; and Angela, a biomedical engineer. Baltz graduated from University of Arkansas with a degree in biological and agricultural engineering. He is a current member and former county president of Farm Bureau and current member of Farm Bureau National Peanut Advisory Committee, Black River Technical College Ag Advisory Committee and University of Arkansas

Academy of Biological and Agricultural Engineers. Baltz is a former executive officer of the Knights of Columbus. He is a crops spokesperson for the development of the Arkansas Water Plan and is involved with intensive crop drying research with the University of Arkansas. In his spare time, Baltz enjoys traveling across the country and internationally. For New Mexico, Jim Chandler of Portales is the newly-appointed Board member. Jim Chandler has been farming for more than 50 years. He is a multi-generational farmer as he and his son Colin are partners in a farming business that Chandler s father began in He grows corn, cotton, hay, wheatlage, grain sorghum and peanuts and pastures cattle. Chandler has a diverse background working in greenhouses, as a welder, teacher and university grounds director; in addition to his career in farming. He attended Eastern New Mexico University. Chandler believes the National Peanut Board is important because farmers need advocates to correct misperceptions about conventional agriculture that have become barriers to consumption. NPB does a good job in that advocacy arena and helps in the development of new and improved foods and varieties involving peanuts. Chandler is active in agricultural and community organizations. He is an officer on the New Mexico Peanut Growers Association, New Mexico Peanut Commission, New Mexico Peanut Research Board and New Mexico State University Ag Science Center. He was the co-founder and director of Sunland, Inc., past member of New Mexico Chili Association and former officer on the New Mexico Farm Bureau. He is active with his church and served for many years on the local school board and as a local and regional science fair judge. Chandler and his wife Judy, a retired schoolteacher, have two other children, Lorin and Tracy (Altman). In his free time, Chandler enjoys making knives, ironworks and woodworking. Karen Jackson of Seminole, Texas, is the newly-appointed New Mexico alternate member. Jackson is a co-partner of Gary and Karen Jackson Farms based in Lea County, New Mexico. Their acreage is not only in eastern New Mexico, but also in several counties in west Texas. They grow peanuts, cotton, peppers, watermelons and rosemary. I look forward to serving on the National Peanut Board and learning from the new experiences, said Jackson. We have been growing peanuts for 20 years and I know how important it is to keep learning new things. Jackson received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of the Southwest. She has worked with the farming operation in the capacity of accounts payable and payroll for the past six years. Prior to that, she taught at Seminole Middle School for five years. Currently she serves on the board of the Seminole I. S.D. Education Foundation, a charitable education association. The Jacksons are members of South Seminole Baptist Church where Karen serves in the youth ministry. They have one daughter, Lacy, 17.

In her spare time, Jackson heads up the Seminole High School Summer Golf Association. She enjoys playing golf and spending time outdoors. For Oklahoma, Les Crall of Weatherford is the newly-appointed Board member. He currently serves as chairman of the Oklahoma Peanut Commission and a former member of the Peanut Standards Board. I am very pleased and excited to be a member of the National Peanut Board and to promote sustainability in agriculture, Crall said. Crall has bachelor of science degree in accounting and computer science and M.B.A. degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a J.D. degree from University of Oklahoma. Crall s primary farming enterprises are growing peanuts, wheat, grain sorghum, hay and maintaining a cow-calf herd. Crall is also the past president of the Weatherford Rotary Club, past-president of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and a Paul Harris Fellow. Crall is a member of the Weatherford United Methodist Church. In his spare time, he enjoys sports and provides the radio broadcast commentary for the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs football team and has been the public address announcer during the basketball season for nearly three decades. Gayle White of Frederick is the newly-appointed alternate member. White is the owner/operator of White Farm and Ranch with her husband, Joe D., and has been engaged in peanut production for more than 25 years. I appreciate the chance to continue serving the peanut industry as a member of the National Peanut Board, said White. The White family grows Virginia peanuts, cotton, corn and wheat, and raises Angus cattle. The Whites three children, Jessica (Lewis), Whitney (Bell) and Austin, and two sons-in-law, Justin Lewis and Brandon Bell, are also involved in farming and agriculture. directors for the Oklahoma City Sirloin Club and the Resolutions Committee of the Tillman County Farm Bureau. For course and registration information contact us at Sales@deibellabs.com THE PEANUT FOUNDATION - STEVE BROWN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR My recent trip to visit Chinese peanut scientists was confirmation that Foundation-funded research is on track and making significant impacts within the international research community. I fully recognize that The Peanut Foundation exists to support the U.S. peanut industry and that is our goal, but collaboration with the international research community is the best way to accomplish that goal. Chinese researchers have been involved with the Peanut Genome Initiative from the beginning had have made significant contributions. As we begin the fifth year of our five-year research plan, I m confident that we will exceed our original goals. As the international community continues to find more usable genetic markers, our breeders will have more tools with which to develop better and better peanut cultivars. We ve declared from the beginning that information developed by the Peanut Genome Initiative will be publically available through normal scientific journals. But generation of information is only the first step. Before that information can be translated into tangible impacts, it must be utilized by breeders that are aware of local issues and industry desires. Released cultivars must be tested to prove performance, propagated and maintained to insure purity, and typically managed as intellectual property that generates income and supports future releases. The infrastructure of the U.S. peanut industry is better equipped to utilize new genetic information than anyone in the world and that is why we stand to benefit from this public research data more than anyone else. International collaboration is helping us meet our goals here in the U.S. The Foundation has released a call for proposals for 2017 research projects. Decisions on funding will be made at the December APC meeting in Washington. We welcome your input into the direction of our future research programs. We are also working on final versions of our next five-year plan. This is an exciting time for the U.S. peanut industry and it is my goal that Foundation research will help lead the way as our markets become more and more international. While in China, I had the opportunity to drop in on a peanut conference sponsored by the APC. I was amazed at the interest in U.S. peanuts. Our high quality and competitive prices will continue to drive international demand.

etde All major functions of etde are working successfully with over 810,000 documents uploaded to date. The commodity groups using etde are continuing to press AMS and FAS to assist our industries in expressing the need for Canada, Mexico and the EU to start accepting electronic documents. A letter has been sent to the Under Secretary of Agriculture from the 5 commodities using etde to begin discussion on having a single portal for electronic documents since more countries are beginning to use electronic documentsl. We have held discussions with the CIO of USDA and he is supportive. If you need assistance getting registered with etde or need additional information, please contact Steve Calhoun (calhoste@bellsouth.net ) or Howard Valentine (hvalentine@peanutsusa.com). TOTE BAGS Interesting research by Chris Butts on recommendations for US cold storages has been accepted for publication in Peanut Science. He presented the information at APRES in July and should have it published in the Fall. Following up on the discussion at the June meeting about expanding or redirecting the scope of this Taskforce and the etde Taskforce, the new name of the combined Taskforces will be the Packaging and Handling Taskforce. Several new areas have been identified and the combined group will begin work in these areas this fall. 10 EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PREVENTING FOOD ALLERGIES THROUGH EARLY DIETARY INTERVENTIONS You would be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive, current and readable (even by the non-clinician) review than this. George du Toit and colleagues are at the leading edge of food allergy research and they write clearly and succinctly about preventing food allergies through early introduction of allergenic foods like peanuts. If you seek an authoritative and reader-friendly narrative encompassing recent studies such as LEAP, LEAP-On and EAT and postulating about their implications for the future, then this is a good place to turn. Personally, I think it should be required home-work for much of the general media who continue to misunderstand the findings and exaggerate their implications, which does no service to public understanding or people with food allergies themselves. Historically, advice on allergy prevention rested on strict avoidance of allergens, peanuts being a specific case in point. Just avoid them is easy to say, but repeated studies showed it was very hard to achieve in the real world where peanut protein is ubiquitous. Well-intended but weakly evidenced guidance in the US and Europe in the late 1990s (which was meant to be precautionary for at risk families only, but quickly became normative in the minds of health professionals and the public) for pregnant and breast feeding women to avoid peanuts, singularly failed to reduce the instance of peanut allergy. The history of the past several decades has been a rising incidence of sensitisation to peanut and later clinical allergy in children. Allergen avoidance, then, wasn t delivering the results expected certainly where peanuts were concerned. Just the opposite. So the focus began to shift and continues to strengthen towards the, for some, counter-intuitive approach of early intervention of allergenic foods to achieve tolerance. And early means as early as 4 months, which runs strongly counter to existing guidance on waiting longer before introducing solid foods (complementary feeding), a point which can cause confusion in health professionals and new parents. That s why the focus of the current review is so important: it answers the questions how did our knowledge get to where it is today and where is the science taking us. The authors take us on a journey aimed at building a better understanding of contemporary research studies that make use of early introduction of common allergenic foods into infant diets as a preventative strategy against the development of food allergy. The review covers the epidemiology of peanut allergy and describes the landmark comparison study between children in Israel and North London where the only distinguishing factor was that the Israeli children all ate a peanut-containing snack, Bamba, and had virtually no allergy while the British children avoided peanuts and had the expected levels of allergy. That provided a key clue about the possibility that early introduction of the allergen had a protective effect, contrary to the prevailing guidance. The review then covers the hygiene hypothesis so often misinterpreted by media, which is really about the health of our gut and that of our mothers. The diversity of the newborn NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE: Dr. Andrew Craig

child s microbiome is now a main focus, because research suggests that the healthier the gut microflora, the less likelihood the young child will develop allergic conditions later. This links not only with the diversity of the mother s diet (and the corollary not to unnecessarily restrict it during pregnancy) and also with the range of foods introduced to the child in the first months after birth. We now know, as we did not in the 1990s, that there is no association between the development of peanut allergy and maternal consumption of peanuts during pregnancy, but that message still needs repeating often. All of this background leads into an elegant description of the key features of the most recent studies themselves - LEAP (Learning Early about Peanut Allergy) and its related investigations and analyses - which have been reported in this newsletter in previous months. Where we are now is that both children at risk for peanut allergy and those not at risk (no eczema or egg allergy) have both benefitted from early introduction of peanut. Even those infants consuming the most peanut have no detrimental effects and importantly have normal developmental measurements for weight. So early intervention is both safe and effective. We also know that the window for achieving tolerance is quite narrow and occurs early: it starts to close by the milestone of sitting and is almost entirely shut by the milestone of walking. In terms of intervention strategies, this is highly valuable knowledge. As is the finding that parents need help to implement allergen introduction food regimes, but with help the compliance rate can be rewardingly high. All of this surely is the way forward for long term prevention of peanut allergy. This review is not the final word on the subject as research is ongoing in many centres, but it is a very valuable and timely resource to everyone who is interested in food allergy, particularly peanut allergy, as we await the new guidance which is based on the studies that the review describes.
