Francisca & José Gutierrez Mexican food in our family was more than just our daily sustenance, it also meant holidays, birthdays and fiestas. Each occasion had its special food.

Christmas meant tamales, birthdays meant enchiladas and fiestas meant tacos. Not that we didn t have these foods any other time of year, it s just that a celebration meant a food that took more than the usual preparation and time, thus more caring. We have carried on this tradition family members choosing what food was to be prepared for their special day. From this tradition, we started Maria s in a small 7-foot wide building as a carry-out only. The only complaint we ever received over there was that we didn t have room for customers to sit and eat. Our move here has taken care of that. We use the same family recipes that have been handed down through the generations. We still make many things from scratch, from our sauces to our chorizo. Because of the family food celebrations, we have used the family names in the menu. You will find grandmothers, grandfathers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles.
