Backgrund n Prfessr Ken Fugelsang Kenneth C. Fugelsang (December 13, 1946 - February 20, 2017) Prfessr Emeritus, Department f Viticulture & Enlgy Winemaster, Fresn State Winery B.S. (1969) and M.S. (1972) Bilgy, Fresn State Ken Fugelsang was a highly respected member f the grape and wine industry and will be remembered as a key player in the develpment f Fresn State s wrld renwn enlgy prgram, the first university in the United State t have a cmmercial winery n its campus. Fr ver 40 years, this internatinally-recgnized enlgist is credited with building a legacy f wrld-class winemakers wh cntinue t grw and impact the wine industry tday. A graduate f Fresn State, Ken s career began in 1971 as a technician in the enlgy prgram and ended in 2011 when he retired as the Fresn State winemaster and a faculty member in the Department f Viticulture and Enlgy. Frm 2011 thrugh 2016, hwever, Ken s lve f educating future winemakers kept him in the classrm n a part-time basis. His last graduating class at Fresn State was in May, 2016. During his tenure, Ken published mre than 150 technical papers and 18 bks. His bk Wine Micrbilgy - Practical Applicatins and Prcedures, c-authred with Charles Edwards f Washingtn State University, received the Paris-based Internatinal Office f the Vine and Wine s Prix dl OIV in 2007 - nly the secnd time an American authr was recgnized in the field f enlgy. Accrding t frmer Fresn State winemaker and clleague Jhn Giannini, Ken has trained hundreds f winemakers natinally and internatinally; many f whm have gne n t acquire prestigius acclades. Ken has als given seminars and wrkshps in many f the winemaking regins f the wrld. He is truly an industry icn. On February 20, 2017, less than ne year after fficial retirement frm Fresn State, Ken Fugelsang lst his battle with cancer at the age f 70. His frmer students, friends, and clleagues will remember Ken as a quiet, talented man wh influenced the lives and careers f s many. Hundreds f friends gathered at the Fresn State Winery n May 13 t hnr this man wh was a leader in wine educatin. He leaves behind his wife, Ann and sn, Jeffrey. 2

Petrucci is knwn by many as the father f the wrld renwn viticulture and enlgy prgram at Fresn State and a pineer f the grape and wine industry wh educated generatins f leaders. He was a true visinary with a generus heart and lve fr his family and students. Dr. Petrucci began his frty-five year career at Fresn State Cllege in the fall f 1948 after graduating frm UC Davis. Frm 1948 t 1954, Petrucci first taught viticulture classes at Hammer Field, a wartime Air Frce base, befre the campus mved t its current lcatin n Cedar and Shaw Avenues in Fresn. In additin t establishing the university s viticulture and enlgy academic prgrams, Petrucci funded the Fresn State Viticulture and Enlgy Research Center in 1985 and served as its directr until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Petrucci was cnferred as an hnrary dctrate f science by Califrnia State University, Fresn in 1994. During his tenure, Petrucci published numerus papers and bks detailing grape grwing practices and als established the V.E. Petrucci Library, a cllectin f the Henry Madden Library, that supprts the viticulture and enlgy disciplines, and cntinues t serve students, faculty, and the grape and wine cmmunity. At the time f Petrucci s passing in December f 2016, frmer clleague and internatinally knwn enlgist Ken Fuglesang said, the University and industry we Petrucci a great deal nt nly fr the tutelage and preparatin and preparedness f students in viticulture and enlgy, but als fr his visin and directin in research that have made a significant cntributin in terms f what we knw tday. Petrucci was raised n his family s farm in Escaln, CA and served in the U.S. Naval Air Crps at the end f Wrld War II. As a prfessr f viticulture at Fresn State, Petrucci s skill and influence grew the viticulture and enlgy prgram t internatinal prminence. In additin, he cunseled mre than 53 grape-grwing cunties with his rare expertise, establishing ur regin as a wrld leader in mdern viticulture. As a result, he received many hnrs during his lifetime, including the Califrnia State Fair Wine Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, Fresn State Meritrius Perfrmance and Prfessinal Prmise Award in 1986, and the UC Davis Distinguished Achievement Award in 1995. Dr. Petrucci will be remembered by s many fr his passin, dedicatin, and cntributins t Fresn State and the grape and wine industry as a whle. Fresn State President Jseph Castr called Petrucci an extrardinarily talented man and said, His leadership and many cntributins frm a legacy f academic distinctin at Fresn State that will be hnred and built upn in the decades t cme. 3
