***Scroll *** Scroll Down For November Menu*** This month Greenwich Schools are celebrating Potatoes NOVEMBER Local Tray Day: November 6 9 Get your taste buds ready! Fun to Know! Potatoes Galore! When potatoes were first cultivated in Peru and Bolivia in 800-500 BC, there were approximately 3,000 different varieties in all kinds of colors! Roots and Shoots Potatoes are root vegetables, which means they grow underground, with their stems above ground which can grow up to 4 feet! We eat the roots, not the shoots. This month our cafeteria is featuring local potatoes from Pineland Farms, located Maine! Food Service staff are getting ready to prepare some delicious freshly harvested potatoes. On November 6, we ll be featuring a Stuffed Baked Potato with chili and/or cheddar cheese. On November 9, we ll be featuring Roasted Red Potatoes. Try our recipe below in your home. We will be featuring different local products each month this year through our Put Local on Your Tray program. Tasty Tidbit #: Studies show that kids may need to try a new fruit or vegetable 7 times or more before their palates adjust and a preference develops. Keep calm and taste on!

RECIPE Roasted Red Potatoes: Ingredients: / pounds small red or white-skinned potatoes (or a mixture) tablespoons olive oil teaspoon Oregano teaspoon Thyme ¼ teaspoons garlic powder Salt Pepper to taste Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut potatoes in quarters and place in bowl with olive oil, oregano, thyme, garlic powder; toss until well mixed. 3 ACTIVITY Potato Stamps: Slice your potato in half. Use a paring knife to carefully create stamps from the cut sides of your potatoes, such as hearts, starts, or triangles. If using tempera paint, put different paints into small trays (you can reuse the tops of large yogurt containers or other food packaging). Designate one potato stamp for each color. 3 Dump the potatoes on a baking sheet and spread out into layer; roast in the oven for 0 minutes, flip and roast for another 0- minutes or until potatoes are tender and crisp. 4 Create potato stamps to create prints on cardstock to make cards or bookmarks, or use blank paper to make works of art! 4 Remove the potatoes from the oven and serve!
