Autumn Term: No 11 Tel 01737 354541 email: info@tadworthps.surrey.sch.uk Website: www.tadworthps.surrey.sch.uk 21 November 2014 Always remember that you are unique just like everyone else The theme for this year s national anti-bullying week was Let s stop bullying for all! It saw us focusing as a school on how we are all different and that no-one should be teased for being different. Disability was considered as part of this theme. We started the week with two assemblies, one for our younger children and one for children in Years 4-6. Our school council, who also form our antibullying alliance, discussed the content and messages of the assemblies with Mrs McGhie and Miss Prophet who are also members of this alliance. There were many perceptive and relevant comments made by the younger children including: Being different makes us special and Don t leave people out make them feel included. The older children considered, as part of their assembly, whether all disabilities are visible. It was evident that many of the children, as with many adults, find it harder to understand and identify disabilities that can t immediately be seen. Many of the children shared their own personal experiences as part of our discussions. A number of children talked about their siblings who have autism and how they see the world differently to how you may see it. Another boy spoke about the impact that a stroke has had on his Nan s abilities to do certain things. The children s comments and contributions were very relevant and sensitively shared, and received, by the others. It was lovely to see children feeling comfortable and happy to share their own experiences with others which I believe epitomises the ethos of our school. The key message which appeared to come across clearly to the children was Treat everyone how you would want to be treated yourself. If you stick to this code, you won t go far wrong. Everyone is A PART of not APART from our school community. JK
