Italian Wine Overview 7 Production According to the latest data from the Italian Enologists Association (Assoenologi), Italy produced 3. billion liters of wine in 7, the lowest campaign since 7 (3. billion liters) and percent down from (. billion liters) due to severe frosts in April and the summer drought. Overall, quality is good. Production decreases were registered in Toscana (- percent), azio/umbria (- percent), Sardegna (- percent), ombardia (-3 percent), Puglia (-3 percent), Sicilia (-3 percent), Abruzzo (-3 percent), Marche (-3 percent), Emilia-Romagna (- percent), Piemonte (- percent), Veneto (- percent), Friuli Venezia Giulia (- percent), and Campania (- percent). However, despite reduced volumes, Italy will retain the title of world's largest wine producer, as chief rivals France and Spain have also been affected by adverse weather conditions. Veneto, Puglia, and Emilia Romagna are the main wine-producing regions, accounting for 3 percent of total production. Approximately one-third of Italy s wine production is Controlled Appellation (DOC and DOCG). The leading grape varietals for red wine are Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Merlot, Barbera, Negramaro, Primitivo, Nero d Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, ambrusco, and Aglianico, while the most popular varietals for white wine are Trebbiano, Catarratto, Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Moscato. Consumption Wine consumption in Italy has been declining for decades. Causes for the trend include changing lifestyles and tastes, as well as anti-alcohol marketing campaigns. Per capita wine consumption is estimated at less than 33 liters for 7, considerably lower than liters in 7 and liters in the 7s. Recent wine consumer surveys show that Italian origin and familiarity with the winery are the main elements in determining consumer choice. Despite economic austerity measures, Italian wine consumers are seeking higher quality wines, but still in the modest price range. Trade In, Italy s wine exports remained stable at billion liters valued at $. billion, mainly to the States, Germany, and the Kingdom. The top Italian wines consumed in the States are Prosecco, Pinot Grigio, Spumante, Moscato, and ambrusco. In the period January-August 7, Italy s wine exports reached.3 billion liters valued at $. billion. In, Italy s wine imports were estimated at million liters valued at $33 million, a 3 percent drop from the previous campaign, mainly due to reduced volumes from Spain (- percent) and the States (- percent), the leading suppliers to the Italian market. In the period January-August 7, Italy s wine imports totaled million liters valued at $ million. Table : Italy s leading wine exports (January-December ) Un it
