1 United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Fresh Deciduous Fruit (Apples, Grapes, & Pears): World Markets and Trade 9 1, MT Deciduous Fruit on Seasonal Cycles 6 Northern Hemisphere 3 Southern Hemisphere Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Countries in the Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere are on opposite marketing seasons for apples, grapes, and pears. The majority of exports from Southern Hemisphere countries are shipped between February and June (blue), the off-season for Northern Hemisphere countries. The Northern Hemisphere season runs July through December. Complementary marketing seasons are beneficial for consumers as deciduous fruits are available year-round.
2 Page 2 APPLES: 211/12 HIGHLIGHTS Summary Global production and consumption rose by about 5 percent from the previous year to a record level 65.1 million tons and 52.5 million tons, respectively. China and the European Union continue to drive the expansion. Trade also grew, with exports estimated at a record 5.4 million tons, mostly from the EU. China s production rose by 5 percent on expansion in the western provinces, where more land is available and labor is cheaper. Over 8 percent is consumed domestically and 15 percent is used for processing. Although China is the world s second largest exporter, it only exports 3 percent of its production. are up slightly. Production in the EU is up nearly 1 percent to an estimated 11.8 million tons based on favorable weather in the major producing countries. Abundant supplies, along with weak domestic consumption resulted in nearly 4 percent surge in exports to a record 1.5 million tons. Russia and Ukraine accounted for much of the gain. Indonesia U.S. 211/12 (833, tons) Others Taiwan India Mexico Canada Production in the United States is estimated to be up slightly to 4.2 million tons in spite of reduced production in Washington, where more than half of the apples are grown. U.S. exports are 4 percent higher to an estimated 833, tons partially fueled by stronger demand from India and Colombia. Chile s production is down slightly to 1.4 million tons based on higher than normal temperatures. Producers are diversifying their orchards by increasing planting densities and replacing traditional varieties (mostly Red Delicious) by newer and higher yielding ones. Tighter supplies, coupled with escalating costs and a strong peso, resulted in a more than 5 percent drop in exports to an estimated 75, tons. The United States and the European Union are the major markets.
3 Page 3 FRESH TABLE GRAPES: 211/12 HIGHLIGHTS Summary Global table grape production for 211/12 is up half a million tons from the previous year to an estimated 16.5 million, with China accounting for nearly all of the growth. World trade is up slightly to 2.4 million tons with greater exports from the United States, China, and Hong Kong more than offsetting declines from Chile and Mexico. China continues to expand production as farmers switch from less profitable crops. Growth in consumption has outpaced production, stimulating more than a 4 percent surge in imports to an estimated 168, tons, notably from South Africa and Peru. are also up on strong demand from Thailand and Vietnam as quality improves. U.S. production fell slightly to an estimated 897, tons based on cold and wet conditions in California last spring. Imports dropped following production losses in Chile. expanded to 347, tons partly in response to Mexico lifting retaliatory tariffs. Chile s production is estimated to decline slightly, leading to a reduction in exports as sellers shipped to more profitable European markets. Chile is the fifth largest grape producer, but is the dominant exporter, accounting for about a third of all trade. U.S. 211/12 (347, Tons) Others Canada Hong Kong Indonesia s imports are up 2 percent to 6, tons primarily because of larger Philippines shipments from Chile and Indonesia China. has more than doubled over the last five years as population and incomes rise. Mexico Argentina s production is estimated down 25 percent to 11, tons following late spring frosts. are estimated down 2 percent due to reduced exportable supplies and are also constrained by Brazil s decision to suspend automatic licenses. EU consumption continues to outpace production, with imports rising to an estimated 58, tons, mostly from Chile and South Africa.
4 Page 4 PEARS: 211/12 HIGHLIGHTS Summary Global pear production is estimated at a record 21.6 million tons, up 5 percent from the previous year as China continues to dominate production and growth. Trade is nearly unchanged, but at a record level. China s crop is estimated 4 percent higher to a record 15.6 million tons as more trees are planted in the western provinces, where land is available and labor is relatively cheaper. Expanding consumption is keeping pace with rising production. are down slightly because of high prices, appreciation of the Yen, and a slowdown in demand in some Asian markets. The EU produced an estimated 2.7 million tons, up about 15 percent attributed to larger harvests in the major producing areas. EU consumption is marginally higher influenced by consumers changing tastes and preferences for more healthy and convenient foods. jumped more than 35 percent because of ample supplies with a greater proportion going to Russia and Brazil. Thousands EU Now World s Largest Exporter EU China United States Chile 27/8 28/9 29/1 21/11 211/12 U.S. production rose 15 percent to an estimated 85, tons. Domestic consumption is up slightly. Greater supplies at lower prices helped exports to rise 2 percent to 185, tons, primarily destined to Mexico and Canada. Argentina s production fell 1 percent to an estimated 76, tons based on adverse weather and harmful effects of Chile s Puyehue volcano eruption on the major growing region (Alto Valle de Rio Negro in Patagonia). As a result, exports plunged 2 percent to an estimated 38, tons exacerbated by the higher cost of labor, along with more expensive fertilizers, pesticides, and fuel. Brazil, their major export market, revised its import requirement which is further constraining shipments.
