Last year a HorizonScan highlight (dated 27/07/2017) drew seeds contaminated Sudanese sesame attention to the increasing number of alerts with salmonella received from Greece in this regard, with 10 alerts received over a 7 month period at that point in time. A year on, this issue continues to grow, with 38 alerts received since January 2018 from Greece, Poland and Germany.

Following investigations, the CDC believe the outbreak is linked to raw turkey products. The strain of Salmonella reading involved in the outbreak is present in live turkeys as well as in many raw products, raising concerns this could be a widespread issue in the turkey industry.
