Main Menu Spring & Summer 2016

Nutrition and hydration is a vital part of your care in hospital. Eating well will help your body fight infection, replace lost nutrients, prevent weight loss and provide you with the energy to recover. Drinking adequate beverages is also important to ensure you stay well hydrated which will help improve your wellbeing. Here at Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust we bring you our menu in conjunction with our partner ISS Facility Services Healthcare. The Eat Well brand encompasses our simple philosophy that we want you to eat well while you are here in our hospital and we care that you have nutritious and appetising food and drinks. Our Menus Our menus are developed with our patients and are seasonally planned to include a wide variety of enticing hot and cold choices chosen to ensure that we meet individual nutritional needs based on the British Dietetic Association standards. This is our Main menu which also includes smaller portion main meals as well as Halal and African and Caribbean choices. We also have a separate Kosher menu should you require this. If you require a special diet menu which includes: Puree or other modified consistency, Gluten Free or Allergy, please inform your Ward Host/Hostess. Your experience in our hospital is very important to us. Should you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to talk to your Ward Host / Hostess. Dietary Coding Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Healthier Eating choices are limited in fat and salt (and desserts are limited in sugar). These are suitable choices if you have been advised to follow a healthier diet for example for your diabetes or for your heart health or if you are trying to lose weight. Higher Energy choices are suitable if you have a small or poor appetite or if you require food high in energy due to your illness, weight loss or surgery. S Softer choices for meals which are easily eaten and easier to chew. V Vegetarian choices do not contain meat, poultry or fish ingredients or their bi-products. Vgn Vegan Option NGCI No gluten containing ingredients have been used in these choices. Mildly Spicy meal. Medium Spicy meal. Lunch and Dinner A selection of delicious and nutritious choices are available for lunch and dinner. First select a starter, then choose either a cold or hot choice from our selection of freshly prepared main salads, sandwiches, jacket potatoes or a main meal. Finally select a traditional hot pudding or a cold dessert over the page. Meals will be garnished, and sauces, gravy, condiments (mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, salad cream, mustard, tartare sauce) are available. Please ask your Ward Host / Hostess at the time of meal order. Please refer to the dietary information section on the back of this menu for further details. Breakfast A continental style breakfast is available each morning. Please select a fruit juice, cereal, toast, bread, roll or croissant and spreads as desired. Orange, Apple or Pineapple Cereals served with full fat, semi-skimmed milk. Cornflakes V Rice Krispies V S Bran Flakes V Weetabix V S Ready Brek V S GF Cornflakes NGCI Fresh Seasonal Fruit V S NGCI White or wholegrain toast, bread or soft roll or croissant served with butter, sunflower spread and a selection of standard and reduced sugar fruit preserves or a cheese portion. Starters Homemade Nourishing Soup of the Day V S served with a Bread Roll (White or Wholemeal) S Please request either butter or sunflower spread S Apple, Orange, Tropical or Pineapple Main Salads A bread roll or gluten free bread is offered with all our main salads please inform your Ward Host/Hostess of your choice. Simple Chicken NGCI Chicken served with mixed leaves, grated carrot, red onion, tomato and sliced cucumber. Tuna Nicoise NGCI Flaked Tuna and hard boiled egg mixed with salad leaves, tomato, cucumber, new potatoes and a French dressing. Cheddar Ploughman s V NGCI Cheddar Cheese served with crisp iceberg lettuce, tomato, pickled onion, pickle and apple. Three Bean V NGCI Cannellini, flageolet and butter beans mixed with red onion and a French dressing served with crisp iceberg lettuce and new potatoes.

Main Sandwiches All sandwiches are available on white or wholemeal bread. Fish in Parsley Sauce S White fish portion coated in a parsley sauce, served with steamed potatoes, diced carrots and diced parsnips. Sweet & Sour Chicken Chicken Breast strips in a sweet and sour sauce served with Basmati Rice. Roast Chicken Roast Chicken breast served with roast potatoes, a sage and onion stuffing ball, gravy, diced carrots and broccoli florets. Shepherd s Pie Traditional minced lamb with carrots and onions topped with mashed potato served with sliced carrots and garden peas. Pork Stew Pork stew flavoured with herbs and wholegrain mustard. Served with roast potatoes, green beans and sweetcorn. All Day Breakfast Plain omelette, pork sausage, bacon, sliced potatoes and baked beans. Macaroni Cheese V S Macaroni pasta in a creamy cheese sauce with wholegrain mustard. Vegetable Curry S V Vegetable curry served with long grain rice. Main Meals If you would like a side salad or extra bread or bread roll please ask your Ward Host / Hostess at the time of ordering. Pasta Bolognese S Penne pasta coated in a rich minced beef, tomato and herb flavoured sauce. Beef Lasagne Lasagne pasta layered with a rich beef bolognaise and cheese sauce served with diced carrots and broccoli florets. Salmon Fillet S Steamed salmon fillet with cheese sauce served with boiled potatoes, broccoli florets and diced carrots. Vegetable Lasagne V S Lasagne pasta layered with mixed peppers, courgettes, mushrooms, onions and red lentils in a rich herby tomato and cheese sauce served with sliced carrots and broccoli florets. Quorn Tomato Pasta S V Penne pasta with quorn mince in a tomato and herb sauce.

Smaller Portion Main Meals If you would like a side salad or extra bread or bread roll, please ask your Ward Host / Hostess at the time of ordering. Sausages & Mash Pork and leek sausage, served with mashed potato, onion gravy, sweetcorn and peas. Meatballs and Pasta S Penne pasta in a tomato and basil sauce topped with pork meatballs. Chicken Korma S Chicken in a korma curry sauce served with basmati rice. Traditional Hot Puddings Apple Crumble V Apple pie filling topped with sweet crumble topping. Jam Sponge S V A light sponge topped with fruit jam. Lemon Sponge S V A light sponge topped with lemon curd. Chocolate Sponge S V A light chocolate sponge topped with rich chocolate sauce. You will be offered fresh drinking water and a choice of a range of beverages throughout the day. During the mid-morning and afternoon beverage service, you will also be offered a biscuit and/or fruit. The Ward Kitchen A variety of foods are available from the ward kitchen 24 hours a day please just ask. The choice includes bread, spreads, jams, cereals, biscuits, cheese and biscuits and fresh fruit. Light Snack Meal If you have missed the lunch or dinner meal service (due to treatment or tests), we offer a light snack meal which is available upon request. Please alert either your nurse or your Ward Host / Hostess. The light snack meal consists of a fruit juice, a sandwich, crisps, cheese and biscuits as well as a thick and creamy yoghurt, a cake and a piece of fresh fruit. Dietary Information If you have been told to follow a specific diet, look for the symbol on the menu next to the item. Explanations of the dietary symbols used in this menu are listed in the introduction. This dietary information is provided for guidance only and should be used at your discretion. Further Information regarding nutritional content and food allergens is available upon request; please ask your Ward Host / Hostess or Nurse. Protected Mealtimes It is important to us that your meal time is an enjoyable experience. We operate protected meal times so you are able to eat your meal in peace and without interruptions and to ensure that those patients that need assistance receive it. Ensuring you get the meal you choose is key to your experience whilst in our hospital. You will have time to look at our menu and our Ward Host / Hostess will take your menu order and ensure that you receive the meal you have ordered.
