I wanted it so I could letter it for the Durango & Silverton, as a companion to the Aspen Gold one I did last year. The sun was really bright today, so excuse my exposures, but here's a couple pictures so you can get an idea of how it looks:

Have you told us the secret of how you got the letters to drool before? Drool! Reply author: Ted Yarbrough Replied on: 26 Jul 2005 17:06:54 Timmy, Super job! Looks like it almost belongs on MY RAILROAD! Replied on: 26 Jul 2005 21:39:34
Page 5 of 11 Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Don, the weathering is mostly different color washes applied and allowed to run down the car naturally. To make the lettering "run" I used a white wash, applied only to the lettering, so it ran down a little, then after it was dry, did a boxcar red wash over that. I finished up with very light dusting from flat black and light earth spray cans, then sealed everything with flat clear coat. Reply author: Richard Smith Replied on: 26 Jul 2005 22:26:45 Timmy, Looks great! I like the runny lettering. Thanks for the how-to! Did you weather the Aspen Gold car too? Replied on: 27 Jul 2005 11:34:57 Richard, thank you! In answer to your question, yes, I did weather the gold car, but not as heavily. Generally, I'm in favor of lightly weathered equipment. Here's a couple of pictures:

Reply author: Richard Smith Replied on: 27 Jul 2005 19:49:04 Gorgeous Timmy, Ehhh! I wasn't referring to you although you may very well be gorgeous (politically correct disclaimer ). I was refering to your lokie and rolling stock. Very nice indeed and you're right; Ted's RR does look beautiful!

Bruce, I wish we lived closer, too. Easier to exchange modeling ideas, and another layout to run on, too! Thanks Don! Glad to be of help. Hopefully with practice I'll do better! Richard, I'm far from gorgeous, hehehe, but appreciate the nice comments on my trains! Matt, thanks! As far as the young'uns getting you gifts, it's easy when they say "I want to get you something nice. What would you like?" Hehehe <rubs hands together in anticipation> Thanks JC! The support a guy gets here on MLS makes sharing projects worthwhile! Reply author: Stan Cedarleaf Replied on: 28 Jul 2005 17:32:50 Wonderful, Timmy. The new box looks fantastic. Just a great job. Ted, Thanks! That WAS a great day! Hope we do it again one day! Reply author: patseale Replied on: 30 Jul 2005 05:31:53 Tim - What grand work! It amazes me to see so many talented folks here on MLS. You all give us excellence to shoot for. What a great group of talent and knowledge Shad has brought together. It is a privilege to be able to take part, to study, and learn. By the way, IMO and as a newbie what do I know, I think that both levels of weathering have their place. Replied on: 31 Jul 2005 01:46:28 Thank you Patrick! Yes, the talent pool here on MLS is amazing! I've learned SO many things! I agree that both styles of weathering have their place, it could get dull with everything looking just the same. Oh, and newbie or not, we try here to respect everyone's opinion! That's the great thing about this site! Thanks for your comments! Reply author: Pagardener Replied on: 31 Jul 2005 05:56:19 I am jealous Those cars are a work of art!!!!!!if you ever get tired of them let me know as I am doing Silverton as well Keep up the good work (and the pics) Barb
Page 11 of 11 Replied on: 31 Jul 2005 13:58:20 Thank you Barb! With such nice compliments from everyone, it's a sure bet I'll continue posting pictures! I found pictures on the web of these particular cars and road numbers, so I designed the decals as close to them as possible. The Accucraft cars I did the models from are also a nearly exact match to the prototypes. Stan printed my decals, and I'm sure he would be glad to make some for anyone else here at MLS, with my blessings. mylargescale.com Forums : http://www.mylargescale.com/forum/ mylargescale.com / Model Railroads Online, LLC Close Window
