Friday 10th November 2017 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year 2017-2018 Issue 7 HEAD S MESSAGE Today s Head s message has been written by Mrs Price who would like to share her thoughts on how beautifully our children at Hales responded to our Remembrance assembly. Today we held a Remembrance Service at Hales and the musical performances and respectful behaviour of the children made it a very moving occasion. The Orchestra opened the Assembly with a fine rendition of Pomp and Circumstance and it was lovely to see children of all ages performing so well together. The whole school then sang I vow to thee my Country, before being invited to travel back a hundred years in time to think about what would have been happening in the world then and consider how many children would have known someone who was fighting or who had died in the war. We also learned about the symbolism of the poppy. Ralph Gawthorpe from the Senior School performed The Last Post faultlessly before we took part in two minutes silence. We finished assembly by singing The National Anthem. This week in assembly We introduced the PSHE theme for this half term Celebrating Difference Next week in assembly We will be marking anti-bullying week. The School Council will be leading our Monday assembly at Hales. Kind regards, Mrs G Bowser Headteacher FORTHCOMING PREP SCHOOL EVENTS NOVEMBER Fri 10 Sat 11 Mon 13 Tue 14 Wed 15 Fri 17 Sat 18 Mon 20 Tue 21 Fri 24 RIDDLE ME THIS Remembrance Service (Hales) Parents Association Uniform Sale, dining room Senior School 10.00am Anti-bullying week U10 A, B, C & D Rugby v Blue Coat (A) 2.45pm Instrumental music Consultation Week Year 5 visiting mountain walker Hales Book Fair week (more details to follow) U9 A, B, C & D Rugby v Blue Coat (A) 2.45pm U11 A, B, C & D Rugby v Blue Coat (H) 2.45pm Celebration Assembly U11, U10 & U9 Rugby v Old Coventrian RFC Michael Whetstone Shield (H) 10.30am Year 5 Shakespeare Week - including RSC trip Year 3 Egyptian Day U9 A, B & C Rugby v Eversfield (A) 3.00pm Parents Association Christmas Fair, Senior School Hall, 7.00-9.00pm U8 A & B Rugby v Bablake (A) 3.00pm U11 A & B Hockey v Solihull (H CSF astro pitches) 4.00pm Before half term our riddle was: There was a green house. Inside the green house there was a white house. Inside the white house there was a red house. Inside the red house there were lots of babies. What is it? SOLUTION: A watermelon! Our new riddle is: A man is trapped in a room. The room has only two possible exits: two doors. Through the first door there is a room constructed from magnifying glass. The blazing hot sun instantly fries anything or anyone that enters. Through the second door there is a firebreathing dragon. How does the man escape? THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. Laurence Binyon from The Fallen

NOTIFICATIONS INSTRUMENTAL CONSULTATION WEEK: 13 TH -17 TH NOVEMBER A reminder that Instrumental Consultation Week will take place next week. If you do decide to take up the opportunity of sitting in on a lesson then we would ask that you come to the reception area at the agreed time where your child s instrumental teacher will meet you. PA SCHOOL UNIFORM SALE The next P.A. uniform sale is on Saturday 11th November 10-12 pm in the Hales dining hall. Please note that uniform will no longer be purchased from parents however donations of uniform will be greatly appreciated. We kindly ask that all items donated are clean and in a good condition. Surplus uniform and uniform not on the current list will be donated to a charity that distributes clothing to poverty stricken areas in the world. Extra volunteers to lend a hand during the uniform sale is always a real help. Setting up at 9.30am and closing down from 11.45am are times when extra help would be useful. If you have any spare time please come along. Thank you!! Any queries please contact the P.A. directly by e mail pa@khviii.net THE TRAVELLING BOOK FAIR IS NEARLY HERE!! Next week Hales Reception will be the venue for our Book Fair. The doors will be open from 4pm-5pm each day from Tuesday 14 th November until Friday 17 th November. We will have a wide selection of books for you to browse through, so come and join us! Your children will be bringing home a booklet today (Friday) detailing some of the books that will be available for purchasing. Payment for your purchases can be made by cheque (please don t forget to put your child s name and class on the rear!) or by card using your mobile phone (details about this process will be available at the Book Fair). Don t forget: If there is a book that you are desperate to buy which can t be found on the shelves or has sold out, I can order them for you at the point of purchase at the Book Fair. For each purchase made we will receive a commission which we will then use to spend on books for the school library. How wonderful is that?!! Looking forward to seeing you next week! Kind regards Mrs Emma Tucker (Head of English) LOCAL CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES I am looking to put together a leaflet detailing a range of local clubs and activities on offer to children and families in our community. If your child is already involved in an activity and you are happy to recommend them, please can you drop me an email with your suggestion. manshipe@khps.co.uk Many thanks Miss Manship CHILDREN IN NEED NON UNIFORM DAY PARKING AT THE SENIOR SCHOOL On Friday 17th November, children are invited to wear their pyjamas to school in exchange for 1 to be donated to Children In Need. Children can also bring some 20p s for activities that will be held on the playground. There will be a non uniform day on Friday 24th November in exchange for a bottle or sweets for the Tombola for the Christmas Fayre. Please make sure that any contributions are sealed and in date. A polite reminder to parents to please drop children off at the Crescent and not outside the Senior School Reception. This can cause congestion and other issues for the Senior School site. SCHOOL BANK The HSBC School Bank will be opening next week for deposits! If you wish for your child to make a deposit, please make sure that it is in a sealed envelope and that on the front is written clearly: Child s name Class Amount

WELL DONE! During October Half Term Alegria in Year 1 competed at the British National Sequence Championships in the world famous Winter Gardens, Blackpool. It was her first time in the very busy Under 10 category and aged just 5 there were to be no finals made this time but hopes are high for her next major championships in January. She also competed as part of the Euphoria Formation Team from Bedworth, placing 5th. Well done Alegria! SKATE SHOW INFORMATION KHPS are putting in a strong contingent this year! Below are Tamsyn, Victoria and Alayna are getting ready for the Skate show of Around the world in 80 days at Planet Ice.
