RETAIL CATALOGUE

Welcome to Simon Bos Nurseries We are a wholesale tree nursery specialized in providing large, locally grown trees to landscape contractors. However, we are happy to accommodate individuals who make an appointment to select and purchase our trees. This requires some planning on both sides but we believe you will be pleased with the quality of our product and service. We are open by appointment only! Please phone 403-330-8010 or email simon@bosnurseries.com. The Nursery Simon Bos Nurseries is a family owned and operated tree nursery with approximately 100 acres in production in the Coaldale area. The trees we grow are hardy and sure to transplant well into any landscape in Southern Alberta. Our field grown trees are harvested in early spring when they are still dormant. Each tree is placed into a wire basket with a burlap sack to contain the roots. These ball and burlap trees are ready to be transplanted into a new landscape. that are not transplanted in spring are moved into our holding facility where they are available for purchase and transplanting throughout the summer and fall. Since we are growing the trees locally, availability will vary from time to time. If you would like to select a specific tree for purchase in early spring for transplanting later in the season we can harvest and hold that tree for you in our holding facility for an additional fee. Our potted production consists of trees that are planted and grown in containers that are roughly 20 x20 and 20 deep. These trees are similar in size to our field grown trees but they are more convenient to handle and they are available for purchase and transplanting from spring through fall. Consistent with industry standards, our deciduous trees are priced by the diameter of the tree measured 12 above the ground. This is the calliper of the tree and typically our trees are between 2 4 calliper and 8 to 14 feet tall, depending on the species. Evergreen trees are sold by height, starting at 4 feet up to 12 feet for most species. At times, lower grades may be available at discounted prices. 01 WWW.BOSNURSERIES.COM 403-330-8010

Directions: From Lethbridge go East on Hwy. 3 until your reach the second set of traffic lights in Coaldale, then turn left on to Hwy. 845 going North for 9.6 km then turn right on to Township road 10-2 for 3.2 km. Simon Bos Nurseries is on the right, take the second entrance for parking in front of the office. Planting Instructions: 1. Confirm that your location suits the tree that you intend to plant. Consider things like overhead power lines, underground utility lines and proximity to boundaries and other structures on your property. 2. Dig a shallow, broad planting hole. Make the hole wide, as much as three times the diameter of the root ball but only as deep as the root ball. Breaking up the soil in a large area around the tree provides the newly emerging roots room to expand into loose soil and helps the tree become established. 3. Ensure that the tree is planted at the proper height by keeping the top of the root ball level with the ground. If the tree is planted too deeply new roots will have difficulty developing because of lack of oxygen. 4. Straighten the tree in the hole and begin backfilling with good soil. Add soil in layers and settle with water. Continue this process until the soil is 20cm (8 ) from the top of the hole and then remove the strapping and burlap near the top of the root ball. The top ring of the wire basket can also be removed. 33 WWW.BOSNURSERIES.COM 403-330-8010

Planting Instructions: 5. Continue adding soil to the hole in layers and settling with water until the hole is filled and the tree is firmly planted. 6. Make a saucer-like rim around the outside edge of the root ball to direct water into the root zone. 7. Adding a 2-4 layer of organic mulch to the area at the base of the tree helps maintain a healthy growing environment. Leave a 1 2 mulch free area at the trunk of the tree so that the bark of the trunk is not covered. 8. For potted trees, remove the container and apply the same principles. 9. If necessary, stake the tree by driving one or two stakes into the ground near the edge of the root ball. Fasten the tree to the stakes with webbing or another soft material to prevent damage to the tree. Stakes should be removed after two seasons. 10. Provide follow-up care. Keep the soil moist but not soaked. Water trees at least once a week, barring rain, and more frequently during hot weather. When the soil is dry below the surface of the mulch, it is time to water. Continue until mid-fall, tapering off for lower temperatures that require less frequent watering. 11. Other follow-up care may include minor pruning of branches damaged during the planting process. Prune sparingly immediately after planting and wait to begin necessary corrective pruning until after a full season of growth in the new location. 12. Apply root stimulating fertilizer (these are higher in phosphorous). Do not apply nitrogen fertilizers until the 3rd year after planting. Enjoy! WWW.BOSNURSERIES.COM 403-330-8010 34
