Introduction ISTA (2008 edition) A Seed Reference Collection is an essential tool to help a seed testing laboratory accurately identify seed samples. The ISTA Purity Committee has developed the ISTA for three reasons: 1. To list the minimum content that an ISTA accredited laboratory could be expected to have in its Seed Reference Collection. 2. To provide guidance to the ISTA Proficiency Programme for the species that are routinely seen in samples. 3. To indicate whether seed can usually be identified to the species level. The list is composed of 130 entries. It includes the names of species when species are usually distinguishable. Where a genus is shown in the lists as Genus spp. it does not preclude a laboratory from identifying seed to species level. It is not obligatory for an ISTA accredited laboratory to include all of the 130 species in their collection. The number in a collection will depend upon the scope of accreditation, and therefore a laboratory may choose to have more or fewer than the 130 species, as appropriate. The ISTA Purity Committee is responsible for reviewing and updating the. Any requests for additions, deletions or corrections to the list must to be sent to the Chair of the Purity Committee. Updated versions will usually be proposed by the ISTA Purity Committee to the Ordinary Meeting for discussion and adoption every three years. The next review/update is due for discussion at the ISTA meeting in 2010. 1 Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench Malvaceae 2 Ageratum houstonianum Mill.
