OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH! Breast cancer is much more serious when diagnosed at an older age. 85 percent of all breast cancer occurs in women over the age of 50, and 60 percent of cases are found in women over the age of 65. Interestingly, a woman s chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer in their thirties is only at 1 in 233, but increases to a 1 in 8 chance for a woman in her eighties. On average, women are diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 62. Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. Clinical breast examinations (CBE s) are recommended every year for women 40 and older. Breast self-examination (BSE) is optional. American Cancer Society Federal & State Standards for Congregate Meal Program This is in response to the question raised regarding allowing grandchildren to be served before seniors at congregate meals: MCCOA is a senior service program. We must abide by federal and state standards for all the programs we offer. Michigan state standards mandate that individuals who are eligible for the congregate program must be served first-that s folks who are at least 60 and their spouse. We love grandchildren! If you bring grandchildren (or anyone under 60 with you who is not a spouse) they are certainly welcome here, and you have the option to wait until all table numbers have been called, and go through the line with your guest, so that you can all eat together. This is not a policy that anyone at MCCOA has the authority to disregard. We are responsible for following it, and are assessed at least annually by the Area Agency on Aging to ensure that we are. Thank you for understanding!

I S S U E 1 4-2 0 1 7 P A G E 3 Upcoming Events LEARN THE WARNING SIGNS OF ESTATE PLANNING AND ANNUITY SCAMS Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Atlanta, Hillman, and Lewiston Senior Centers The State Bar of Michigan seminar, A Living Trust Education Initiative: Who Should You Trust? During the presentation, you will learn how to identify and avoid trust mill scams. These scams tout the benefits of a trust based estate plan irrespective of specific needs and make exaggerated statements about the probate administration process to create a seemingly convincing story on why a trust and an annuity are the only good estate planning choices. It is important to make sure that the person giving you estate planning advice is a licensed lawyer concerned about your best interests and last wishes and not about making a commission on a sale. Attend the seminar to avoid becoming an unsuspecting victim and receive a specially-designed folder containing essential estate planning information and easy-to-remember reminders of the warning signs of trust-based estate planning and annuity scams. For more information, contact the MCCOA office at (989)785-2580 or State Bar of Michigan Professional Standards Division Paralegal Amy Emmons at (517)346-6343 or email at sssbmsred@michbar.org. Telephone-based support group for women caregivers Two out of three women are serving as caregivers. The Alzheimer s Foundation of America invites women caregivers to connect, share, support and learn from one another in this new telephone based support group. Women provide the majority of informal care to spouses, parents, friends, and neighbors, and they play many roles while caregiving. This group will include strategies for care as well as space for open discussion regarding the female caregiver role. This FREE, 4 week telephone based support group will take place on Tuesdays, starting October 3, 2017 from noon to 1:00 pm ET. To learn more and register, please contact 866-232-8484 or go to www.alzfdn.org.
