This azalea needs a moist planting site with rich soil and dappled light. Azaleas require acid soil. Blooms in July. Flame Azalea Rhododendron calendulaceum Flame azaleas have clusters of five or more large, orange to yellow flowers at the ends of candelabra-arched branches. It is an upright-branched deciduous shrub, 6-12 ft. tall and wide. Fall colors are delicate reds and yellows. The flowers generally open before the new leaves. Azaleas require acid soil. Blooms May-June. Mountain Azalea Rhododendron canescens Mountain azalea is a loosely branched shrub growing up to 8 feet tall with beautiful, smooth bark in mottled browns. Whorls of pale pink tubular flowers emit a delicate fragrance. The flowers open before the leaves mature. Mature shrubs may form large colonies in bottomlands. Azaleas require acid soil. Blooms in April. Plumleaf Azalea Rhododendron prunifolium The Plumleaf azalea grows 8-15 ft. high with whorls of four to five brick red flowers with arching stamens. Beautiful, glossy dark green foliage. Although this is a southern species with a limitied range it has been successfully planted and grown for many years in arboreata as far north as Maine. Azaleas require acid soil. Blooms in July/August. Fringe Tree Chionanthus virginicus Fringe tree is a short deciduous tree that can tolerate a sunny dry site or moist well drained shade. Upright, mounded crown with lower branches spreading, often shrub-like, multiple trunks, 12-36 ft. tall. Clusters of fragrant white fringed blossoms in April-May. Bluish black, olivelike fruits in late summer are eaten by birds. Pale gold fall color. General pollinator support in spring. Good nesting tree for songbirds. To order or reserve plants email: pandra@beechhollowfarms.com

Small, pale yellow flowers emerge before the leaves in spring, and give way to glossy red fruits in the fall. Fall leaf color is golden yellow. Birds love the small fruits. This plant is dioecious:both a male and female plant are needed for the female to produce berries. Bigleaf magnolia Magnolia macrophylla An upright, loosely branched tree with large teardrop shaped pale green leaves. The leaves can be up to 24 long. Large, up to 11 across, fragrant white flowers bloom May-June. The bright red fleshy seeds are embedded in a semi-woody cone that may persist into winter. Needs moist soil, good in understory. Schwerin's False Indigo Amorpha schwerinii A medium-sized shrub consisting of one or more arching, woody stems with sparse branches lined with shiny, dark green, pinnate leaves. Elongated plumes of tiny, deep purple flowers with bright orange anthers bloom in late Spring, and are followed by small brown seed pods in late Summer. Birds love the seeds. American Beauty Berry Callicarpa americana A variable, woody shrub that can be multistemmed and bushy in full sun, or slender and taller with sparse leaves in deeper shade. Inconspicuous whorls of pink flowers at the leaf nodes give way to bright purple berries in the fall. Beautyberry is an important wildlife forage plant in the Southeast. Fruit is often winter persistent. Sweet Shrub Calycanthus floridus A compact, woody shrub with bright green, glossy, deciduous leaves. Fragrant reddishbrown flowers with multiple wispy petals sprout in mid-spring. All parts of the plant exude a semi-sweet anise/cinnamon type odor when disturbed. Yellowroot Xanthorhizza simplicissima A low growing, upright, single stemmed shrub with large lobed, coarsely toothed bright green leaves.
