Trees are one of the most important features of the English landscape. To maintain the tree population in the country, we need to plant seven million more per year. Trees are in your garden for a long time, so it is important to choose correctly, remembering the height and width to which they may eventually grow. We have given an approximate height obtainable after 10 years, and the ultimate height. Trees can be grown for their flower, fruit or leaf colour and are essential to many species of bird and animal life which we love to see. This catalogue is a guide to the trees which we most frequently stock. Please contact us or visit our plant advisory office for further information or to check whether the tree(s) you are interested in are in stock. 2

PLANTING Planting can be undertaken throughout the year providing the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or under drought conditions. Remove top spit over an area of approximately two to three times the diameter of the pot. Mix with moist peat and two handfuls of Bonemeal. Fork over second spit, removing large rocks, lumps of clay, etc., If the soil is poor, mix in peat, Bonemeal or well-rotted manure - making sure that this does not some in contact with the plant roots. Test container in the hole and bring soil level up to ensure correct planting depth. The top of the container should be at the same level as the surrounding soil. Remove plant from the container carefully, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. Before planting make sure that the container is thoroughly watered, if dry, especially in summer. After planting, water well - (drench with two cans - 4 gallons) as needed. Water three or four times a week in hot weather. When planting in grass, do not allow grass or weeds to grow over the root area, i.e. within 50cm for at least five years. Where soil is poor or well drained, mulch over the surface to a depth of 5cm with well-rotted compost or bark chippings, but keep mulch away from the base of the trunk/stem. MAKE SURE THAT TREES ARE FIRMLY STAKED IN THEIR EARLY YEARS. (Extra heavy trees need a stake at either side and tree ties to support.) NORMAL PLANTING EXTRA HEAVY TREE PLANTING Incorporate well-rotted manure (one shovelful) plus one handful of Bonemeal) ANGLED STAKING Stake at approx. 45 degrees. On a windy site, the stake should be angled towards the prevailing wind. 3
