Tedako Preschool Newsletter Save the Date! Japanese Circle Time Observation Our younger children will be nervous to see parents and strangers in the room, so we put up special curtains for parents to hide behind and watch from in the hallway. Please enter and exit from the back entrance of the CDC since the children will be going outside after circle time and classroom activity and it may cause them anxiety if you use the main door and they see you leave. For children over the age of 3, we invite parents into the the classroom to watch and participate in Japanese circle time. Kukuru Class Babies love dancing with music. When teacher start sing a song, they start clapping their hands, moving their body and touch their head. The Wheels on the bus, Head, shoulders Knees and toes, and Buzz, Buzz, Buzz (Bunn Bunn Bunn) are the songs we are singing everyday. The children are learning new words and movements while playing with their teachers. Kukuru s Newest Teacher Aimi Toubaru is joining the Tedako Kukuru class from June 1, 2017. She is a graduate of Japan's Women's College of Physical Education, holds a Japanese Childcare Certification, and has 2 years of preschool teaching experience, including one year as the lead teacher of the baby class at Hagoromo Preschool. At her last job, she was known to be patient, kind and reliable. We are excited for her to join Tedako preschool as she has always loved working with children. Welcome Aimi Sensei!

In the toddler classes, the children are continuously learning to listen and follow directions. This aids them in developing language skills, learning self-help proficiencies, and building their self-confidence. The younger toddlers are working on simple two to three word directions, while some of the older toddlers are learning simple two- and three- step direction in both English and Japanese languages. Teachers make sure to use enthusiastic and respectful tones with the children to encourage them and validate approval of their efforts. Through positive guidance the toddlers are able to recognize expectations, identify daily routines, and gain some independence by learning selfhelp skills. It is normal for toddlers to test boundaries, but through positive guidance, redirection, a lot of patience, and unconditional love they learn to follow directions in time. After Circle time the Umusan children are told it is time to go outside and play, but they must first put on their hat and sit at the door nicely. Each child obliges agreeably, because they love to play outside!

Before going outside teachers remind the children that it is time to put on their shoes. The teachers then guide the children to the edge of the deck to sit. Here, the Churasan teacher is encouraging the children to put their shoes on themselves, but is there for support and assistance if needed. Once the children have their shoes on they are directed to hold onto the rope, because it is time for a nature walk. Here you can see Churasan and Kanasan are headed out for an adventure!

The development of children s fine motor skills is an important foundation that paves way for the attainment of other significant skills in a child s life, such as drawing, painting, and self-help. In Nuuji class, we strive to provide experiences, activities and guidance that will assist our little characters develop these through every day play and fun! Fine motor refers to small muscle development, for example, in their fingers. Hand-eye coordination is also a key component. This month Nuuji class have been working on their fine motor skills without even realizing it through our daily activities! In our Japanese classes, we have been attaining lexical knowledge based on our bug theme, whilst using our little muscles to perfect our scissor work! The children laughed and had great fun as their scissors approached the creepy crawlies! Another example was creating flowers. The children used their pencils to outline the detail on the petals of the flower. They truly enjoyed this and were really proud of their detailed shapes! They then used small sponges to water colour the petals, then glued the petals together to create a beautiful flower. Their artistic and creative flare, and shape and color knowledge were all put into practice whilst developing their fine motor skills, but most importantly, they had a lot of fun!

This month Kafuu class children have been designing their own bracelets and necklaces using beads. We provided various sizes of beads in order to promote different grasps. Larger beads felt similar to holding a large pencil or marker. Smaller beads encouraged children to use their pincer grasp, thus strengthening the small muscles of their hands. We also invited our children to reflect on the following questions: How long will my necklace, bracelet, or keychain need to be? How many beads do I need to complete this project? Encouraging children to think through functional math problems as a way of motivating them to improve academic skills in this area. We also planned craft activities that require the use of scissors. For example, on our sea animals week we cut some cardboard rolls into the shape of octopus tentacles. Our children try to cut the roll 8 times from one end in order to create eight octopus tentacles connected together at the opposite end. In this activity, the children had fun learning about sea animals and making crafts, while practicing counting and developing their fine motor skills.

The Kugani class learning theme for the month of May was "Sea animals". The children used their small motor skills to create many sea animals like "Jellyfish, Octopus, and fish", all the animals are beautiful and very unique just as the children who created them. These creations transformed our classroom to a beautiful under the sea environment. The children also enjoyed the ride on the blue boat and fished various kinds of pretend fish. Children drew their own favorite fish and put paper clip so they can fish with magnetic fishing line (hook). There was a giant life sized white shark made out of masking tape on the floor for measurement. The children were having fun comparing themselves to the size of the shark and looking at size of shark with amazement. We had fun exploring under the sea for month of May and next month in June, we will time slip to Dinosaur world!!

Over the past few months Spring has brought us colorful flowers, insects, and animals. Aside from going out and exploring natures gifts, the children in the Shinka class really enjoy drawing, painting, and making crafts related to what they've seen outdoors. Last month the children learned about dinosaurs, insects, and Spring. Our classroom is getting more colorful by the day with all the new art! The children in the Shinka class love doing open-ended art activities. It gives them the freedom to create how they want to and allows their imaginations to run wild. By leaving the crafts open-ended, our children can really express themselves through their art! Instad of asking children to make a dinosaur like ours, we want them to make hir or her own version of dinosaurs, any way they like. Prior to the activities we teach about the topic to help give ideas and get their brains going. When it is craft time the children them create from within! It's great watch them create art, and then show it off to each other! The Shinka class made these wonderful dinosaurs, bees, and flowers last month. Each one is different and unique in its own special way.

Churaumi Aquarium Excitement filled the air last month for the Kugani and Shinka classes. They had been anticipating their field trip to the aquarium since April! The children boarded the OIST bus for a 1 hour ride to the Churaumi Aquarium. The classes enjoyed lunch in the event space room. In the room there were video feeds of the fish and other sea animals that they were about to go and observe. There was also a small replica model of the aquarium that the children were very interested in. Some of them wondered if the inside of the model had water and fish like the real aquarium!! The first thing the children experienced was the touch tank. The children can put their hands in an aquarium and feel starfish and sea cucumbers. You could see the wonder and amazement on the faces of the children as they touched the animals. It was a wonderful sensory experience for them! At the next tank we looked at had many tropical fish. The children looked at the beautiful colors and counted the schools eagerly. The excitement never left the children`s voices as we went from tank to tank. At each tank children would make observations about different fish and share their thoughts. Whale sharks are so BIG!, Look, I found Nemo!, The lobster is scary, I don t like it. The highlights of the trip were the dolphin show and the shark room. The children loved watching the sharks swim around them. Many noticed the tiger shark right away because, "he has stripes like a tiger", some of the children said. They also enjoyed touching the different kinds of shark teeth in the room. "Ouch!", and "they are sharp" were some of the comments that the children were making. After that, it was on to the dolphin show. The dolphins danced, jumped high out of the water and waved to the children as they watched with huge smiles on their faces.
