President s Pen As 2014 comes to an end, I want to thank the community for supporting the La Habra Heights Improvement Association with their annual membership and for volunteering to help out with events. I would like to acknowledge the Board members for their dedication to the community: Music in The Park: Jennifer Jones (Secretary) and Carolyn DiMario (assisted by Dominick DiMario) co-chairs for Music in the Park. We appreciate the many hours spent planning and coordinating our summer concert season. Halloween Haunt: I offer a huge THANK YOU to Susan and Walt Ferguson for stepping in at the last minute to run the Halloween Haunt! Make sure you check out page 5 for pictures of some great Halloween costumes. We appreciate all of the volunteers who helped this year. Easter Egg Hunt: We are very grateful to Erick and Adrianna Armeson for being our official LHHIA photographers for all of our events and thanks to all who volunteered. Heights Life: We began this year with a new editor of Heights Life, Vicki Cooke, and a new graphic designer, Jane Noltensmeier. With the assistance of Carolyn Boehringer and Monica Gunns who handle the advertising in the magazine, we are able to publish eleven issues of Heights Life each year. Thank you all for the many hours that go into every issue. Treasurer: Romalyn Litchfield continues to do a tremendous job as our Treasurer. Membership: Pam McVicar has taken over Membership from Catherine Richert who handled Membership for the past two years. New Board Members: John Powers (Vice President), Chester Jeng (Welcome Wagon), Erick Armeson (Event Photography) and Rick Brooks are new to our Board and have contributed greatly to our events. I am very grateful to the Board and to all of the members of the community who volunteered to help this year. To spread some holiday cheer, Board members have shared some of their favorite holiday recipes on pages 10 and 11. Mayor s Corner March Ballot Measure - Petroleum Operations The initiative petition filed by Heights Oil Watch (HOW) met the signature requirements to be on the March 2015 The current operator of most Heights oil operations, Occidental Petroleum, has submitted written concerns that the Initiative, as worded, creates substantial uncertainty as to whether existing production and existing methods for managing the oil and gas resources can continue and current mitigation payments to local property owners, as well as monetary contributions to the City, are dependent on existing production This Initiative is extremely important. You, as a voter, need to have a thorough understanding of the issue before voting. Our Roads Need Maintenance We are a city with limited financial resources and 42 miles of roads that must be maintained. We receive only 10 cents of each property tax dollar you pay, which is the major funding source for police, paramedic, and other city services. (The County and the State receive the other 90 cents.) The initial Roads Maintenance Workshop, to obtain public input as to how to fund road maintenance, was held November 15, 2014. Thanks to the residents who participated. Copies of the 2012 citywide assessment of road pavement conditions were distributed. In the mid 1990 s, the City authorized a $5 million road repair bond assessing each parcel. Some owners paid the lump sum; others chose installments (which end in 2016) with their property tax bill). The bond money was used to upgrade the roads which had not been maintained since the late 1970s. Simultaneously, each parcel was also assessed a yearly fee which has funded road maintenance but expired in 2013, leaving the city without sufficient funding. Options for road maintenance include renewing the parcel fee, utility tax, rezone properties to allow commercial development, severely reduce city services (including law enforcement, paramedics). Selling or mortgaging existing assets, or depleting the general fund rainy day balance, is not a viable solution for an ongoing funding requirement. I hope everyone has a Happy Holiday Season. Spotlight on Heights Resident Michael Lascari Defending Medalist for All League Golf Michael Lascari is a Senior at La Habra High School. As a Junior, Mike won the League Golf Championship for La Habra High which was the first win in the school s history. He was a Medalist for All League. He is also on the the PGA Southern California Junior Tour. In August he placed 1st at the Western Hills Summer Championship, he earned a 4th place in the Bridgestone Summer Championship at River Ridge Golf Club, and he placed 4th in the Toyota Tour Cup Series at Indian Wells Golf Resort. His current position on the tour is 34th after playing in 2 tournaments. Michael started competing at the age of 4. He played in his first competitive tournament at 4 years of age and placed 3rd in the 6 & Under category. He has been on the U.S. Kids Golf Tour for 10 years and has had the opportunity to play courses in Jekyll Island, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Los Angeles County Junior Tour recently asked Michael to play in their invitation-only tournament at Riviera Country Club on December 22, 2014. He is a skilled athlete - he also plays on the Varsity Basketball team at La Habra High. This year he will defend his league golf title at La Habra High, participate on the Toyota Tour Cup Series, and look for the right college that will allow him to excel academically and athletically. The Lascaris have lived in La Habra Heights for 13 years. Parents Angela and Mike have three children. The oldest is Amanda who is 21, Michael is 18 and Adrienne is 13. Susan and Walt Ferguson stepped in at the last minute to help coordinate the event. Ray Fernandez, local Realtor, generously sponsored the creative photo booth which provided free photo opportunities for all attendees. The LHHIA provided fresh hot popcorn, candy, cookies, prizes, the Trick-or-Treat Alley and games. The La Habra Christian Church provided refreshments. Special thanks to the La Habra Hilltoppers 4H Members, the Weiland family, and all who made The Haunt very haunting! 5

Garden Plot By Community Contributor Beverley Lepak La Habra Heights Horticulturist and Landscape Consultant Photo by Paul Zeko Frosty Our winter solstice officially begins on December 21 at 3:03 pm PST. Along with your other seasonal plans, you can welcome your out-of-town guests, neighbors and visitors with a festive welcome by adding holiday cheer to your garden. Place pots of beautiful poinsettias by the front door and along the entranceway. (Poinsettias should remain in pots for the season and will need protection from frost). Cyclamen are hardy enough to be planted in the soil and can last until February. Add a bit of drama with garden center topiaries of ivy or rosemary. Solar Christmas lights can put a twinkle of light in areas where you don t want to have extension cords (in addition to being energy-wise and a low fire risk). A Winter s Garden Many people envision winter as a snowy wonderland. While we can have some frost, snow is very rare here. If we do get a frost warning, cover frost-tender plants or bring them inside: poinsettias, impatiens, most begonias and any deep tropical plants. Even the vegetable garden will need some protection, but don t use plastic bags! Plastic bags promote condensation and excessive heat, which can bring on both fungal and bacterial attacks. Instead, use old sheets, newspaper or better yet, row cover. Row cover is available at agricultural supply stores, and usually comes in a large roll. It looks and feels like giant fabric softener sheets. Row cover allows in air flow and sunlight which will help keep plants warm enough, but not cook them. Winter Vegetables and Herbs December is a good month to plant beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, endive, salad greens (all kinds of lettuce), mustard, peas, radish, spinach and turnips. Not many annual herb seeds can be sown this time of year. You may be able to sow seeds for dill and fennel, but these may be slow to germinate. Evergreen herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage can be planted any time of the year. French tarragon, mint and oregano will go dormant and die back, but they ll start to regrow once the weather warms up again. In January, you can plant the same vegetables as in December, plus you can start sowing seeds of early spring crops: carrots, chard, kale, rocket (arugula), spinach and turnips. Some gardeners start to sow seeds of Early Girl tomatoes this time of year. It s still too early for annual herb seeds, but you can try parsley and chamomile in sunny areas. January is Bare Root Season Local nurseries should be well-stocked with bare root roses, deciduous trees, berries and grape vines. Check garden centers like Armstrong and Blue Hills Nursery for rose and other garden workshops. Look for bare root roses (versus potted/with soil) with at least three good canes ; prune off cross branches and trim the whole plant to about one-third its height. Soak all bare root plants in water overnight before planting, and follow any additional instructions on the label. January is pruning month for roses as well as any fruit, ornamental trees and vines including berries and grapes. For roses in the ground or in pots: cut back to a few good and sturdy branches and remove all the leaves, including any on the ground, which will help reduce the chance of fungal or bacterial infestations. Winter Blooms Other parts of the country are covered in snow, but here we can have spring all year around! Some tried and true winter bloomers are: cineraria, cyclamen, Iceland poppy, pansy, primrose and viola. Poinsettias can be planted in the ground after the holiday season, but will need protection from the cold their first year. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! in memoriam Kathleen Ericson March 8, 1919 - september 10, 2014 By Sona Christine McCoy Thor, Dawn, Kathleen and Willard Ericson My Mom, Kathleen Ericson,was born in the little harbor city of Cobh, County Cork, Ireland in 1919. She was a war baby. Her father, Berton Bolyard, Sr. was serving in the Navy during WWI when his ship made port in Cobh. He fell in love with my grandmother, Anastacia, and married her. Grandpa had to return to his ship and Grandma boarded a ship with other war brides and came to America with my Mom in her arms. Soon another child was born, Berton Bolyard Junior. Both parents adored music and sent Bert Jr. and my Mom to music lessons. They practiced two hours, every day after school and became accomplished musicians. Bert played the clarinet and was the drum major in the high school band. Mom played the cello and the piano and played for social engagements all over town during high school. Both were awarded music scholarships to Northwestern University and graduated with music degrees. While in college, Mom met Willard Ericson, a pre-med student that later graduated with a degree in Engineering. He swept her off her feet and they were married right after Mom graduated. Dad s family founded the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco), and with his inheritance, he came to California to find the most beautiful spot in the state to build a home. He found it in La Habra Heights at the top of a hill overlooking 8 Mt. Baldy and Catalina Island surrounded by orange groves and avocado farms. They built their hacienda-style home in the late 1940s. Mom got a teaching degree at Whittier College and taught for 35 years. She first taught kindergarten and fourth grade. One of her first students was Johnny Rowland the Fifth (Cinco Rowland). Later, she taught the mentally challenged and special education classes in Norwalk. Mom and Dad had five children. We were all given lessons in art, music, dance and etiquette and college educations. Thor is a pastor and professional landscape artist. Dawn is an accomplished illustrator and published writer. I am a published writer, photographer, musician, teacher and motivational speaker. Kim is a talented craftsman and skilled computer analyst programmer and technician. Tanya is an equestrian, artist and teacher at the Art Center School of Design. My Mom passed away on September 10, 2014. She will be greatly missed but forever remembered. Michael and I live on East Skyline. Below our home is The Succulent Slope, which is dedicated to my mother. Her varied and beautiful plants live here permanently for everyone to enjoy. Mom would love for you to pass by and appreciate how stunningly you can landscape by using very little water. She is still teaching! Brother Bert Bolyard and Kathleen Ericson

LHHIA Board Members Favorite Holiday Recipes Ingredients: ¾ pound pork or turkey sausage 5 6 corn tortillas 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1 cup (4 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese ¼ cup chopped canned green chilies 6 eggs, lightly beaten ½ cup 4% cottage cheese ½ cup Half & Half ½ teaspoon chili powder Christmas Morning Quiche Shared by Vicki Cooke Directions: In a large skillet, cook the sausage until no longer pink; drain. Place four tortillas in a greased 9 pie plate, overlapping and extending ½ beyond rim. Place remaining tortilla in the center. Layer with sausage, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, and chilies. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, Half & Half, cottage cheese and chili powder; slowly pour over the top of the chilies. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cut into wedges. Make/bake beforehand, refrigerate, and heat Christmas morning. Serves 6 Ingredients: 1 Duncan Hines German Chocolate Cake Mix (add water, vegetable oil and large eggs as directed) 1 large tub of Cool Whip, unfrozen 1 large box of JELL-O Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix, add 3 cups of cold milk 4 Heath Bars or Hershey s Skor Bars, chop into small pieces ¾ cup Bailey s Irish Cream Liqueur, or ¾ cup non-alcoholic Baileys Chocolate Coffee Creamer Bake your cake in a 9 x 13 pan, remove from oven, and poke holes in top while hot. Pour ¾ cup of Bailey s Irish Cream over the top, let cool. Once cake has cooled, cut into 1-inch pieces. Directions: In a Truffle bowl or a tall glass bowl, layer the 1-inch pieces of cake, followed by a layer of chocolate pudding, add a layer of Cool Whip, add ½ cup of chopped candy. Repeat layering of ingredients until all is used, saving some chopped candy to sprinkle on top. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 6 hours before serving. Layered Chocolate Truffle Dessert Shared by Carolyn Boehringer Ingredients: ½ cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 tablespoon milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon salt Cookie cutters (tree, star, snowman) Frosting: 2 egg whites ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar ¼ teaspoon vanilla 2 ½ cup sifted powdered sugar Food coloring and edible decorations Christmas Cut-Out Cookies Shared by Pamela McVicar Directions: Cream butter and add sugar gradually. Add well-beaten eggs, milk and vanilla. Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Add to the first mixture gradually. Chill thoroughly. Roll out very thin on a lightly floured board and cut in shapes. Bake on greased cookie sheet about 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool and frost. Frosting: beat egg whites with cream of tartar and vanilla until foamy. Gradually beat in sugar. Put the frosting in several different bowls and add food coloring of your choice. Frost and decorate your cookies. Makes 4 dozen 10
Ingredients: 1 cup butter at room temperature 2 cups powdered sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup (4 oz.) chopped pecans Directions In a large bowl, with a mixer on medium speed, beat 1 cup butter, ½ cup powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Preheat oven to 300 degrees In a medium bowl, mix flour and baking powder. Mix slowly into butter mixture, then beat until well blended. Stir in pecans. Shape dough into 1 balls and space 1 apart on buttered 12 x 15 baking sheets. Bake at 300 degrees until cookies are pale golden brown, about 25 minutes. If baking two sheets at once, switch their positions halfway through baking time. Let cookies stand on sheets until cool enough to handle. Place remaining 1 ½ cups powdered sugar in a shallow bowl. Roll cookies in powdered sugar until covered. Set cookies on racks to cool completely. Makes about 28 cookies Snow-Covered Pecan Balls Shared by Jan & John Powers Ingredients: 1 15 oz. box Raisin Bran Cereal 3 cups sugar 5 cups All Purpose flour 5 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons salt 4 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 1 quart buttermilk 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl. Stir remaining ingredients. Mix well. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full. Bake for 15 minutes. Batter will last up to four weeks in refrigerator. Refrigerator Bran Muffins Shared by Monica Gunns Mushroom and Pine Nut Rice Pilaf Shared by Jennifer Jones Twice Baked Potato Casserole Shared by Jennifer Jones 1 cup white rice 1 cup brown rice or wild rice 4 cups of water 2 cups sliced mushrooms ¾ cup pine nuts 1 chicken bouillon cube 1 tablespoon of olive oil Cook the rice (I use a rice cooker). Sautee pine nuts and mushrooms for a few minutes in olive oil on the stove top. Add cooked rice along with about 1/8 cup of water with dissolved Chicken Bouillon to the Pine Nuts and Mushrooms. Mix together and remove from heat when warm. 4 baked potatoes, 1 cup finely chopped white onion, 2 cups crisped crumbled bacon, butter, Cheddar and Monterey Jack Cheese, sour cream, 3 stalks of chopped green onions Cut baked potatoes into bite-sized pieces. I often use leftover baked potatoes from the night before. Sprinkle chopped green onion and crisped crumbled bacon on top of the potatoes. Add some chunks of butter. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle cheddar and Monterey Jack Cheese on top, the more cheese the better! Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until cheese is fully melted. Top with sour cream dollops and chopped green onions and serve. We wish you and yours a blessed holiday season! 11
The Butterflies are Coming! By Leila Langston The La Habra Heights Garden Club is sponsoring a Butterfly Project to help bring back the Monarchs. In the 1997-1998 annual Southern California butterfly count, there were 1.2 million monarchs. In the most recent count, 2013-2014, there were 211,000! Yes, almost 1 million fewer butterflies! Have you noticed that you just don t see as many butterflies in your yard as you did some years ago? I remember as a child that there were butterflies everywhere all different varieties. No one understands completely why the butterfly population has declined so drastically, but it does appear to have a lot to do with a loss of habitat and the over-use of pesticides. Well, that s all going to change at least here in La Habra Heights! The goal of the Garden Club is to turn as many gardens as possible into Monarch Butterfly Waystations, and to turn the City of La Habra Heights into one giant Monarch Waystation! The Project will go into full swing this coming March. Look for more information in the next issue of the Heights Life! You may see a few more Monarchs even before then we ve already started a small pilot project. Butterflies, including Monarchs, are attracted to most flowers especially those that are purple, red, yellow or blue. When selecting a hostess gift to take to a holiday party, please consider giving the hostess a colorful live plant that will grow outside. Here s to butterflies! 12
Save Water for Ca$h Drawings To encourage La Habra Heights County Water District Customers to conserve water, the LHHCWD is holding quarterly drawings in 2015. Customers who cut their water usage by 10% in a quarter when compared to 2013 usage in the same quarter, will qualify to enter a drawing to win $125 and $500 at the end of the year. Quarters: January - March 2015, April June 2015, July September 2015, October December 2015 One winner will receive $125 cash for each quarter One winner will receive $500 cash at the end of the year You must enter to win.
