Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Circular Series WAP 0911 World Agricultural Canada Wheat: Crop Rebounds Despite Early Season Problems The USDA forecasts Canadian wheat production at 24.0 million metric tons, up 4 percent from last year due mainly to expanded planted area. Statistics Canada s 2011 Estimates of of Principal Field Crops report indicated that farmers plan to harvest 8.55 million hectares for 2011/12, up 3 percent from last year. Planted area increased in Saskatchewan and Alberta, but decreased by an estimated 30 percent in Manitoba as a result of adverse weather conditions. Despite late planting, wheat crop development was able to catch up and the crop is maturing under ideal growing conditions. (For more information, contact Arnella Trent 2027200881.) Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board

EU Wheat: Forecast Higher on Harvest Results The USDA estimates European Union wheat production for 2011/12 at 135.8 million tons, up 2.3 million or 2 percent from last month, nearly unchanged from last year, and 1.7 million tons above the fiveyear average. is estimated at 25.7 million hectares, virtually unchanged from last month. is estimated at 5.28 tons per hectare (t/ha) compared to 5.18 t/ha last month and the fiveyear average of 5.25 t/ha. France s wheat harvest was completed in August with yield results considerably higher than previously expected. Good yields were achieved despite the fact that the wheat belt of northern France endured one of the most severe droughts in decades. is estimated at 35.0 million tons, up 0.5 million or 1 percent from last month, but 5 percent below last year and 8 percent below the fiveyear average. Germany harvested the last of its wheat crop during a short break in the wet summer weather pattern that occurred during the first weekend of September. Harvesting typically begins in late July but frequent rains during late summer prolonged the harvest this year. The same drought that lowered the French crop also reduced the German crop. Although estimated output was revised upwards this month, grain quality has suffered and much of the crop is expected to be feed grade this year. is estimated at 23.0 million tons, up 0.8 million or 4 percent from last month but 3 percent below last year and 3 percent below the fiveyear average. The 2

German wheat crop, harvested later than the French crop, likely benefitted more from June rainfall than did the wheat in France. Weather remained favorable for wheat in southeastern Europe, including Romania and Bulgaria and in Spain and southwest Europe. Adequate rainfall boosted their estimated production by 0.6 million tons in Romania, 0.2 million in Bulgaria, and 0.3 million in Spain. Harvesting is complete in these countries. (For more information, contact Bryan Purcell at 2026900138.) Morocco Barley: Harvest Results Indicate Crop s Significantly Lower The USDA estimates 2011/12 Moroccan barley production at 2.4 million tons, down 0.7 million tons or 23 percent from last month, and down 7 percent from last year. Despite the decline in forecast output the 2011/12 barley crop is still the third consecutive favorable harvest, with total production estimated 10 percent above the fiveyear average. Barley in Morocco is secondary in production to wheat and is grown in the more marginal production regions in the southern and western areas of the country. While a wet autumn, winter, and spring boosted the overall yield of the crop, moisture problems at harvest also presented difficulties. Estimated wheat production was increased by 0.2 million tons to 6.1 million, up 25 percent from last year and 33 percent above the fiveyear average. These two crops comprise the vast majority of Moroccan grain production. (For more information, contact Bryan Purcell at 2026900138.) Egypt Corn: Sharply Declines as Farmers Switch to Rice The USDA estimates Egypt s 2011/12 corn production at 3.8 million tons, down 2.7 million tons or 42 percent from last year. is estimated at 0.52 million hectares, down 0.33 million or 39 percent from last year s 0.85 million hectares. Official figures have not yet been released for this year s crop but government officials and experts attribute the reductions to low corn seed sales and an increase in rice transplants. Rice has long been the favored crop for Egyptian farmers because of its high profitability, but the government had restricted sown area because of the high demand on scarce water supplies from the Nile River. A new environment for Egyptian farmers unfolded earlier this year when regime change occurred, resulting in the temporary installation of a military government. The current government has not enforced rice limits and has abolished fines on excessive planting of rice. Because of these policy measures, rice area is estimated to be up dramatically from last year while corn area is estimated to be down an almost equivalent amount. Corn competes with rice and cotton as the dominant summer crops. Relatively high cotton prices resulted in a yeartoyear increase in cotton area. (For more information, contact Bryan Purcell at 2026900138.) Brazil Corn: High Prices Result in Higher Corn Forecast Corn area is expected to increase for both summer and winter season corn crops in Brazil due to high prices as summer crop planting begins. Total harvested area for 2011/12 is forecast at 14.5 million hectares, up 0.7 million from last year and slightly below the record area of 14.7 million. is forecast at 4.21 tons per hectare, up 1 percent from last year s droughtreduced crop. Brazil s total corn production for 2011/12 is forecast at 61.0 million tons, up 4.0 million from last month and up 3.5 million or 6 percent from last year. Planting has begun for the summer or firstseason crop in southern Brazil, with 7 percent of the crop planted in Parana. Recent warm 3

temperatures and good rainfall have also allowed planting to start in Rio Grande do Sul. Planting of corn for the winter or secondseason safrinha crop in central Brazil will begin in mid January 2012, with area forecast at 250,000500,000 hectares above last year s record of 5.86 million. However, the planted area forecast for the secondseason crop could change as corn prices and production costs will be different at planting time after midjanuary, 2012. (For more information, please contact Curt Reynolds at 2026900134.) India Soybeans: Record Crop Projected for 2011/12 The USDA estimates India's 2011/12 soybean production at 10.5 million tons, up 0.7 million or 7 percent from last month and up 7 percent from last year. is forecast at 10.27 million hectares, up 0.67 million or 7 percent from last month, and up 0.97 million or 10 percent from last year. is forecast at 1.02 tons per hectare, unchanged from last month but down 3 percent from last year. The 2011 monsoon season started at a relatively slow rate in May, but rainfall conditions improved significantly in July and August. Despite a slow start to the season, favorable planting conditions have prevailed for the major part of the summer season so far. Most soybean regions experienced an extended planting window that resulted in higher overall acreage. The majority of soybean growing areas in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are reporting higher planted area than previously forecast. Beneficial rainfall is continuing, providing very favorable conditions for crop growth and development. End of August planting progress reports indicate sown area at approximately 10.2 million hectares compared to 9.28 for the corresponding period last year. Increased plantings and excellent crop conditions are reported in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. In general, the crop is at advanced podding to 4

harvesting stages and market arrivals are expected to start in midoctober. India's soybeans are grown exclusively during the kharif (southwest monsoon) season under rainfed conditions. The ideal sowing window is early to midjune and typically commences with the arrival of the monsoon. Some farmers are able to provide supplemental irrigation, though this practice is limited by water reserves and equipment. The main producing states are Madhya Pradesh (53 percent), Maharashtra (34 percent), and Rajasthan (8 percent). (For more information contact Dath Mita, PhD, at 2027207339.) India Cotton: Correction In a previous version of this issue it was reported that the 2011/12 USDA India cotton production estimate increased from the August estimate. This was done in error. India's 2011/12 cotton production estimate remained unchanged from August at 27.0 million tons. harvested was increased by 4 percent from last month. The 2011 monsoon season started at a relatively slow rate in May, but rainfall conditions improved significantly in July and August. Despite a slow start to the season, favorable planting conditions in July and August extended the planting window and increased plantings in all major growing areas. 5
