Wade & Gatton Nurseries 3 Acer freemani Autumn Blaze, AUTUMN BLAZE MAPLE (50' tall x 40' wide) (Plant patent #4864) (Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred'). A hybrid between Red and Silver Maple. Combines the best features of both parents, the drought tolerance of Silver Maple and the fall color of Red Maples. Better branch habit than Silver Maple, though not as refined as Red Maple. Use it as a Red Maple for tough sites, or as a Silver Maple with fantastic fall color. Broadly oval head with an upright branching habit. Medium green foliage in summer. Brilliant orange-red, long lasting Fall foliage color. 4 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer freemanii 'Sienna, SIENNA GLEN MAPLE (50' tall x 35' wide) (Plant patent #11322) Pyramidal growth habit. A new introduction discovered in Minnesota by Dennis Heins. An excellent tree because of its excellent branching habit and form in the nursery. Requires less pruning and forms a well-branched tree, even as a young plant, and is a vigorous grower. It has excellent winter hardiness and has proved to be less susceptible to winter frost cracking, sun scald and dieback. Fall color is a consistent red to burgundy red. Has smaller leaves and finer branching giving it a more delicate appearance in the landscape. Grown on its own root. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 5 Acer ginnala Flame, FLAME AMUR MAPLE (15') A new introduction by the U.S.D.A. with outstanding red fruits called Samaras`. They rustle in the cool breeze and are pleasantly attractive. This new clone also has a more brilliantly red fall foliage color than its species parent. Fragrant flowers are very attractive through summer and fruits persist through winter and are conspicuously attractive in midwinter. Culture: Prefers moist, clay loam soils. ph 6.0 to 7.5. Upright growing and narrow when young, broadening with age. Pale green, 3-5 lobed leaves emerge early in Spring and turn golden-yellow in Autumn. Pendulous yellow-green flowers early in Spring. Small winged seeds in Autumn. Not a long lived tree, but striking in the landscape. Avoid unrelenting sun exposure to protect the trunk from sun scald. Best grown in afternoon shade. Zone 5. 4-3.00-4.00" (#20 Container) 345.00 Acer platanoides 'Emerald Queen' EMERALD QUEEN NORWAY MAPLE (3 inch caliper)

Wade & Gatton Nurseries 7 THE NORWAY MAPLE (Acer platanoides) Eleven varieties of Norway Maples are now for sale at Wade & Gatton Nurseries, as are so listed below: Acer platanoides 'Cleveland' Acer platanoides 'Columnar Compact' Acer platanoides 'Crimson King' Acer platanoides 'Deborah' Acer platanoides 'Emerald Lustre' Acer platanoides 'Emerald Queen' Acer platanoides 'Jade Glen' Acer platanoides 'Princeton Gold' Acer platanoides 'Silver Variegated' Acer platanoides 'Superform' Norway Maples rank third in Maple tree plantings throughout Ohio and Midwestern states. Acer rubrum (the Red Maple) cultivars rank first, Acer saccharum (the Sugar Maples) cultivars rank second, and then third are the Acer platanoides, the Norway Maple hybrids, clones and cultivars. Important features of the Norway Maple are: 1). Abundant yellowish clusters of attractive, predominantly yellow flowers with a slight green color in March. These bloom third of the three, Acer rubrum (reddish) are first, followed one week later by the Acer saccharum (the Sugar Maples) with light yellow and then the Acer platanoides (Norway Maples) with a deeper yellow color. Seeds seem to be produced only one out of five years and are not a significant problem. 2). Drought Resistant: Norway Maples during dry summers in June, July or August, tolerate dryness much longer and better than Acer rubrums or Acer saccharums. 3). Norway Maples have a very durable Fall yellow foliage color! They contrast well with the mid-season Acer rubrum (red) and the mid-season Acer saccharum (orange shades). So where you wish good fall color, be sure to add Norways in groups or as individual specimens in either commercial home owner shade tree plantings.

8 Wade & Gatton Nurseries 4). Norway Maples transplant well, and adapt to most soil conditions, with one exception, they must be planted into soils that are not water laden, swampy or soils with dense compact clay, that hold water in the planting pockets. Acer rubrum and Acer saccharum tolerate the wetter soils better than the Norway Maples, but on a range from wetter, more clay soils, Norways like it the least. 5). Our carefully chosen cultivars are the best of more than 80 or so worldwide selections known. 6). Norway Maples are more resistant to verticillium wilt than either Sugars or Red Maples. Our State of Ohio Nursery Inspector tell us they are resistant to the wilt! 7). Norway Maples grow slower than Acer rubrum or saccharum. Norway Maples generally grow shorter, more dense and compact, with less pruning required to develop a nice looking specimen tree. 8). Root systems are not significantly different than either Acer rubrum or saccharum. All three are shallow rooted. 9). A very popular tree because it grows rapidly when young, is vigorous, strong wooded (it is a hardwood, as are Sugar Maples). 10). Storm and Ice Damage Resistant: Norways have strong branches and limb crotches and do not easily break in windstorms or ice storms. Being a hardwood makes them very desirable. 11). Our selection of Norways are very disease resistant. Over the past 30-40 years, we have never had to spray our Norway Maples for any reason, for harmful pests or disease, nor has our State of Ohio Nursery Inspectors found any harmful pathogens of any kind on them. They are simply a healthy, vigorous tree and we recommend them whole hearted for home owners, commercial plantings, cities, parks, anywhere! 12). Our experience growing Norway Maples goes back 40-50 years, and many of the Norway Maples in the towns and villages in Central Ohio came from our Nursery. Today, our inventory of Norway Maples are unexcelled anywhere in North Central United States. 13). All of our Norway Maples are growing in wide spaced field rows, 8' x 8', allowing 64 square feet per tree. Large trees are growing on double spacing as we have dug out every other tree or row. Each tree has been individually planted, assuring you of a well balanced root system (not set into place with an automatic planter, which tend to set trees in place with a one sided root system).

Wade & Gatton Nurseries 9 Acer platanoides Cleveland, CLEVELAND NORWAY MAPLE (50') A definite improved form with better foliage than the standard Norway Maples we have had experience with so far. A dense, oval and upright top. Growth habit: Grows 30-40' tall by 25-30' wide in 30 years. Grows taller than wide, normally dense and compact. Thin out occasionally on older trees. An improved branching form. Foliage: Darkest green summer foliage of the green cultivars. Good disease resistance, excellent yellow fall foliage color. Popularity: Very popular tree, relatively new, discovered in 1947 in Cleveland and so named. Comments: One of our more popular Norway Maples, probably in the top four. Certainly one of the better forms for street tree uses because they are shorter growing, but not low enough for under utility wires. Norway Maples are very hardy. Zone 4, as we know where they have tolerated -40 degrees F. below zero here in Central Ohio. 10 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer platanoides columnare Compact, COLUMNAR NORWAY MAPLE (40') A compact, narrow growing tree. Very dark green leaves. Very hardy and durable. Useful for narrow curb or lawn strips. This tree appears to tolerate city conditions better than most Maples. It is hardier than regular Norway Maples. Grows more rapidly than other columnar shade trees and if topped, spreads slightly and resembles Emerald Queen Norway Maples. We have noted that there are two distinct forms currently sold in the trade. This form is very narrow and compact, while the other form now called Parkway` is broader. We grow both forms of Norway Maples. This compact form is the original Columnar Norway Maple. This form is narrower than Emerald Queen. Culture: Prefers well drained soils, and does not grow in waterlogged soils, as all Norways. ph 6.0 to 7.5. Zone 3. 15-2.50-3.00" (30" B&B&R&W) 245.00 25-3.00-3.50" (36" B&B&R&W) 295.00 20-- 3.50-4.00" (42" B&B&R&W) 345.00 20-4.00-4.50" (44" B&B&R&W) 395.00 10-4.50-5.00" (48" B&B&R&W) 495.00 8-5.00-5.50" (54" B&B&R&W) 595.00 5-5.50-6.00" (56" B&B&R&W) 695.00 4-6.00-6.50" (58" B&B&R&W) 795.00 5-6.50-7.00" (62" B&B&R&W) 995.00 5-7.00-7.50" (65" B&B&R&W) 1,095.00 4-7.50-8.00" (72" B&B&R&W) 1,245.00 4-8.00-8.50" (76" B&B&R&W) 1,445.00 Sparingly there are a few "Park Grade" Columnar Norway Maples available at 30% discount off above listed prices. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 11 Acer platanoides Crimson King, CRIMSON KING NORWAY MAPLE Also known as Acer platanoides schwedleri nigra`. Maroon leaf color throughout the Summer. Darkest red of all the Maples. The best dark red of all the Maples. A distinctive, colorful, captivating tree developing a symmetrical, compact, rounded head that is magnificent all Summer long with its nonfading, deep, maroon-crimson foliage. Truly the reddest of all the Norway Maples of which it is a descendant. This Crimson King Norway Maple will live for generations, becoming more valuable and attractive each year. These trees are very hardy and easy to grow in all sections of the country, but should be planted in full sunlight for the brightest red color. A superb tree for lawn specimens and street tree plantings. The glistening, satiny foliage will create a startling contrast to any home throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. If you want a tree for any neighborhood to talk about, plant Crimson King, a real 25 to 30 beauty at maturity. Culture: Prefers good soil drainage. Will not tolerate deep planting. Zone 4. 12 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer platanoides Deborah, DEBORAH NORWAY MAPLE (40-60') A new stunning and strikingly beautiful new cultivar. Discovered in 1967 among a group of Norway Maple seedlings. It is an extremely vigorous grower having a straight central leader and a shapely upright head and excellent branch formation. Very similar to Schwedler Norway Maple. New unfolding foliage is brilliant red, maturing into vivid dark green. Leaves show a somewhat ruffled margin, and more of a leathery texture than most Norway Maples. Culture: Prefer well drained soils and a ph of 6.5 to 7.0. Zone 4. 2-1.75-2.00" (24" B&B&R&W) 175.00 5-2.00-2.50" (28" B&B&R&W) 195.00 10-2.50-3.00" (30" B&B&R&W) 245.00 10-3.00-3.50" (36" B&B&R&W) 295.00 10-3.50-4.00" (42" B&B&R&W) 345.00 5-4.00-4.50" (44" B&B&R&W) 395.00 5-4.50-5.00" (46" B&B&R&W) 495.00 5-5.00-5.50" (48" B&B&R&W) 595.00 5-5.50-6.00" (50" B&B&R&W) 695.00 4-6.00-6.50" (52" B&B&R&W) 795.00 A nice field of Acer platanoides 'Deborah' 3.50-4.00" trunk caliper

Wade & Gatton Nurseries 13 Acer platanoides Emerald Queen, EMERALD QUEEN NORWAY MAPLE (60' in 50 years) A rapid grower. Very dark green and glossy leaves. Extremely attractive. Very straight trunk with good branching qualities. A distinct new strain of Norway Maple with considerable merit. A little more narrow growing than regular Norway Maple. Fall foliage color was first noted by this author in 1982 as superb. Color was and remained stable to date on all blocks of Emerald Queen. Color is orange-yellow, and is close to Sugar Maple. Color is mid-season for Maples (mid to late September here in Richland County) and holds well for about three weeks. If a popularity poll was made for Norway Maples, the Emerald Queen would be #1! Culture: Must have good soil drainage, ph 6.5 to 7.0. 14 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer platanoides Jade Glen, JADE GLEN NORWAY MAPLE (50') An outstanding selection, certainly one of the best Norway Maples, where you wish a nice well shaped tree. We have been growing this variety since 1968, and it has withstood the tests. Autumn foliage is a distinctive golden yellow, that when the frosts hit just right the top and outer perimeter of the tree colors up to an attractive orange. These trees are straight trunked with excellent, well balanced tops, and symmetrically branched. Dark green late Summer foliage stands out well in September. Our experience with Jade Glen show it has a slightly broader head than Emerald Queen, but not quite as broad as the Cleveland Norway Maple. Jade Glen is a very uniform grower and exhibits a stately, broad oval, upright form. Culture: Provide with good permeable, well drained soils. Will grow quite well in a stony or gravel or shale soils. ph 6.5 to 7.0. 16 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer platanoides Superform, SUPERFORM NORWAY MAPLE (50') A new selection by Milton Nurseries in the early 1960 s. A rapid growing Norway Maple, noted for its straightness of trunk, uniform even form, heavy dark green foliage. Tolerates dry growing conditions well, as foliage color in August is excellent. Fall color is yellowish-gold, not exceptional, but good. Our Experience: We have been growing it since 1962, and have grown and sold over 2,500 trees to date. It has weathered the tests of time. This variety self branches, and readily forms a well branched top, broader and fuller than either Emerald Queen` or Jade Glen`. Culture: Must have good soil drainage. ph 6.0 to 7.5. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 17 Acer pseudosieboldianum, KOREAN OR PURPLE BLOOM MAPLE (15-25' tall x 15-25' spread) An upright, deciduous small tree or large shrub that matures over time to 15-25' tall with a similar but sometimes wider spread. It is native to forested areas in Korea and China. Medium to dark green leaves (to 5" long) with 9-11 doubly serrate lobes turn excellent shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. Purple flowers bloom in corymbs in spring. Flowers are followed by winged samaras (to 1" long). No serious insect or disease problems. They have slightly better winter hardiness than most Japanese Maples. Easily grown in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Performs well in full sun or bright, sun-dappled locations. Avoid hot and dry sites or sites in strong winds. 18 Wade & Gatton Nurseries THE RED MAPLES (Acer rubrum) Commonly called the Red Maples because of their predominantly red fall foliage color, but misleading because summer foliage is green. This fine family of Maples is perhaps one of the most colorful families. Commencing in early Spring, in mid-march, here in Central Ohio, small flower buds begin to appear in large quantities. These small, individual flowers give the tree a reddish overcast, from a distance, which gives us the first wisp of Spring. These come into flower about a full week to ten days before the Sugar Maples. New leaves appear somewhat reddish on many varieties, but quickly turn throughout the summer. Autumn frosts readily bring forth unexcelled brilliant hues of orange-reds, red-crimsons, and scarlet shades of leaf coloring. A few varieties turn yellow or golden-yellow. Many shapes of trees are available in this family, but predominantly they are mid-sized shade trees, suitable as street trees, residential trees used as a specimen tree in front, side or backyards. Often used for commercial plantings around hospitals, parks, recreational areas and apartment complexes. Acer rubrum and cultivars are fast growers and its wood should be classed as a softwood tree, as opposed to the Oak family, where the wood is definitely a hardwood. Therefore, being a softwood tree, its bark is somewhat sensitive and vandalizes readily and care should be given not to damage the trunks of the trees. This shade tree prefers good drainage, but also requires a lot of summer moisture. New plantings require about five gallons of water per week per each one inch of trunk caliper, during dry periods. The special effort necessary to establish these nicely shaped shade trees are well worth the effort. It is not unusual for a nice maple to increase the value of a residential property by $2,000.00 to $3,000.00. Once established, red maples are long-lived, and become more beautiful year after year.

Wade & Gatton Nurseries 19 Acer rubrum Clump, CLUMP RED MAPLE (3 STEMS OR MORE) (60') Varieties available: 'Autumn Flame'; 'Armstrong'; 'Red Sunset'; 'Scarsen' and 'Schlessinger'. Clump form Maples are becoming more popular every year. We now currently sell hundreds every year. Our best trees have 3 to 6 stems each, and add that quality look to residential or commercial plantings. They are identical to the species, or cultivar they represent, except they are multiple stemmed trees, and remain so for the extent of their lives. They can easily be expected to reach 75 to 100 years of age. A top quality premium and highly prized tree. Our Red Maple Clumps are from Bowhall, Autumn Flame, Red Sunset, October Glory, and Schlessinger stock, therefore they have an assortment of fall foliage colors. We are now growing, trimming, and training clump Acer rubrums to grow like a clump Birch. Quan. 20 Wade & Gatton Nurseries EXPLANATION OF 70% CALIPER EQUIVALENT FOR CLUMP FORM TREES 70% Caliper Equivalent means that the bulk amount of the trunks and top foliage above ground is equal to a comparable caliper tree. Therefore it shall be dug with a 70% equivalent ball size. For example: A Clump Maple with one of its largest trunks being 2" caliper. This tree cannot be dug with the same ball size as you would dig on a 2" tree (26" B&B&R&W). This tree with one 2" trunk also has two other trunks, each being 1.50" caliper. This tree, then with three trunks, would have an accumulated caliper, and top foliage equivalent of a 5" tree. (2" plus 1.5" plus 1.5" equals 5" caliper). The tree has a 5" caliper equivalent as the size of the tree. The tree probably would not grow if dug with a 24-26" ball. According to our standards, in order for the clump tree to survive properly the tree should be dug with a ball 70% of its counterpart caliper equivalent. A full size ball for a 5" Maple tree would be approximately 50" diameter. Therefore 70% of 50" would be 35" and a 35-36" ball will carry the tree. The reasons for not digging a full sized ball for the accumulated caliper is that, there is overlap of roots and ball size of 70% allows for this. At the present time, we have determined this method to determine how big to dig a ball of a clump maple tree. We welcome a better method - idea - suggestions and comments! Note: This applies to Acer rubrum, Acer saccharum, Acer platanoides, Betula, Tilia and most other forms of clump form Ornamental and Shade trees. This easily could become an addendum to our A.A.N. Standards.

Wade & Gatton Nurseries 21 Acer rubrum Armstrong, ARMSTRONG RED MAPLE (35') Syn: Acer rubrum columnaris Armstrong`. Early red flowers in Spring. Green summer foliage. Brilliant red fall foliage color. A fastigiate, spire-like, columnar shade tree. Will fit into the narrowest tree lawn or planting space. Leaves are palmate, dark green above, and glaucous beneath, colors orangeyellow to orange-red in Autumn along with Red Sunset Red Maple. Color is dependent upon soil ph. 22 Wade & Gatton Nurseries Acer rubrum Autumn Flame, AUTUMN FLAME RED MAPLE (30-35' x 30-35' in 50 years) Flowers: Reddish flower buds are noticeable in midwinter, and flowers are the first to flower in very early Spring of all the Acer rubrums. Flowers are also the darkest red. They are small but numerous. Leaves: In Spring they appear slightly tinged reddish, and soon change to a medium green color, but are slightly smaller than the other Red Maples. Fall Color: Leaves turn a bright deep red, dependably, every Fall. Autumn Flame is the first of all the Acer rubrums to turn color in the Fall. They also fall first. Growth Habit: Trees grow slower with slightly more branches, that are slimmer, that do not ascend quite as quickly and produces a tree at maturity about 15 to 20% shorter than Red Sunset or October Glory. Culture: Prefers well drained, but moist soils. Tolerates more moisture than Norway Maples. In extreme dry summers, as the one experienced here in 1988, all of the Acer rubrums showed some drought stress. None of our established trees died, but we watered all we could. Small young trees require extra summer moisture. Prefers ph 6.0 to 7.5, sun or partial shade. 32 Wade & Gatton Nurseries THE SUGAR MAPLES (Acer saccharum and cultivars) Predominately one of the finest shade trees in North Central Ohio. They are long lived, and relatively disease resistant, as attested by magnificent specimen trees aligning many streets, avenues and boulevards in each and every village in all parts of North Central United States. Sugar Maples are generally regarded as a slow grower, but when young, under 20 years of age, they grow well for us, as it only takes approximately 1 year longer to get a 4" caliper tree than with the Acer rubrums, with no irrigation except during drought times. Sugar Maples all have a high sugar content in its sap in early Spring, and all can be used for maple syrup production. Sugar Maples are hardwood trees. There wood is strong, sturdy and holds up well during ice and wind storms, and wounds heal easier, quicker and therefore adverse weather conditions do not adversely affect them. Fall colors of Sugar Maples are basically orange blends which accent well with the reds of Acer rubrums and yellow of the Acer platanoides---all three are needed for color contrasts. Locusts are earlier, as well as Ash, with all the Oaks and Pears being later in the season to color. The Sugar Maples grow to great age and become quite large, but are misleading because after they become 8-10" caliper, they grow more slowly and should be used considerably more in both residential and commercial plantings. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 39 Acer saccharum Green Mountain, GREEN MOUNTAIN SUGAR MAPLE (45' tall x 35' wide) A very hardy, strong, cold wind tolerant tree with branches that resist ice storm breakage. Strong wind damage resistant, and ice storm breakage resistant branches. Flowers appear in early Spring about two weeks after the Acer rubrums bloom. They are yellowish-green and contrast well, at that time of year, among shade trees. An extremely uniform grower which has an upright, oval crown of dark green foliage which turns yellowish-orange with slight reddish shadings in the Fall. Its handsome dark green leaves have more than twice the thickness of waxy protective coating as do the typical Sugar Maples. Consequently, they retain their full color in dry, windy summer weather which causes scorching in ordinary Sugar Maples in the same area. This permits use of Green Mountain Sugar Maples where drought and summer defoliation have eliminated Sugar Maple plantings. Prefers well drained soils, tolerates sand or gravel soils. Culture: ph 6.0 to 7.5. Sun or partial shade. Plant patent #2339. Zone 3. Our Experience: This tree is absolutely the hardiest of all Maples we have grown to date. We have received no frost cracking or any winter injury of any kind to date. Our Number 1 Sugar Maple! It would rate No. 1 also, in a popularity pole, among experienced landscape architects and our experienced Central U.S.A. Wade & Gatton Nurseries 41 Acer saccharum Legacy, LEGACY SUGAR MAPLE (50' tall x 35' wide in 40-50 years) Plant patent #4979, also trademarked, was first introduced to the trade in 1983. It is just now being grown in sufficient quantities to be economically feasible for its use. Overall Form: Grows more compact than Acer saccharum 'Green Mountain', or the species. Its shape is upright, compact, slightly oval. Makes a nice full specimen tree easily, without much trimming. Leaves are very dark green, exceptionally shiny, have heavy substance and resist leaf tatter and drought. The tree develops numerous leaves by count and leaves develop even into the inner area of the trees crown. Fall foliage colors are exceptional! While the color is basically orange, as are most Sugar Maples, the outer edges respond to the earlier frosts, by turning various hues of red. Being so dense, you'll easily see the tips and edges, a shade of red and orange mix contrasted with the orange. Leaves hold tight well into late December. After considerable freezes and cold weather, the leaves turn brown and hold on lightly until the buds push them off, usually in early January during the few warmer days. Legacy Sugar Maples are smaller growing than Acer platanoides, the Norway Maples or Acer rubrums or Tilias or Gleditsias. They reach a maximum height of approximately 50-60' tall by 30-35' wide in 30 years, under optimum growing conditions. They grow rapidly under 10 years of age, then slow down and will grow to great age, if allowed to do so. They are resistant to leaf scorch and more drought tolerant than other forms of Sugar Maples. They are doing well for us as suburban street trees, in parks, in our residential plantings, and we recommend them highly. Zone 4-8. Quan.
