From a little, to a big red dot. An underdog state that defied the odds to pull itself to the very pinnacle of economic success. This is the Singapore story, a tale recounted as the nation celebrated its jubilee just a year back. So what was the secret? Singapore s history points to good governance as the compass that helped the country navigate rocky patches with aplomb. Though much has changed since, much hasn t as well. For one, the island state is still void of natural resources, counting on its people as its most valuable resource. From an import, export trade economy to one focused on manufacturing, and today, a knowledge based economy driven by innovation and productivity, its people have formed the evolutionary nucleus of each stage of progress. Homeownership now stands at an impressive 90% amongst Singaporeans. Healthcare is readily accessible. And basic education, an entitlement bestowed on all its citizens. It is heartening to know the country s progress has improved the lives of the everyday man by leaps and bounds. Unbeknownst to many, emerging countries are now taking their cues from Singapore, as the island state looks to establish itself as a global thought leader in nation building. An eco city in Tianjin (China), a new capital city for Andhra Pradesh (India), townships as far flung as Africa, the list goes on. As we appreciate the astonishing views from The China Club, we should also pay tribute to the country s pioneers and their can-do spirit. For it s this same spirit that will continue to carry this country forward to its centennial. Observe the continuous transformation of the shore line from the 52nd floor. A warm welcome to The China Club.
Andrew Mah, General Manager Words from the General Manager Looking out for family Photo Credit: Jack K Zhai Knowledge Sustains a Family s Dynasty Oriental values have had a profound influence in keeping this modern Asian generation rooted amidst globalised economic progress. At the entrance of the Club s lift lobby, you will find an old Chinese adage written by Lin Zexu ( 林则徐 ), a respectable official of the Qing Dynasty (1644 1912). Lin (1785 1850) was revered for his moral high ground, aggressively opposing the opium trade and its degradation of society. Here, he speaks of the priceless value in passing down virtuous knowledge through the accumulation of books rather than hoarding wealth and power. An apt reminder indeed on what really matters in this age of hyper driven ambition. Singapore celebrates its 51st birthday this August, with many looking in anticipation post-jubilee to the next 50 years. While it s natural to beam with optimism, let us not forget that it s not all been smooth sailing to get to where we are. As the world s economy faces yet another slowdown, the immediate future looks set to be a trying one. Despite these challenges, I would like to assure all our members that The China Club is still committed to deliver top quality food and service. These times call for more stringent spending, so we have taken the onus to offer more value to our members. One such initiative is a 50% discount on Saturdays for Dim Sum dishes. It s the perfect opportunity to treat your loved ones and spend some good quality time with them over the weekend. A gentle reminder as well that we have launched our loyalty programme, which allows members to earn China Club dollars, redeemable for future meals. Then there s our lifetime price reductions to honour our longstanding members; 15% for 15 years and 10% for 10 years. The storms of uncertainty may be troubling but you can always count on us to weather them with you. For you are more than members to us. You are family.
