MY 2012/13 table grape production is estimated to be satisfactory despite the severe drought from mid July to the last week of August that negatively affected fruit ripening. The bulk of Greece s fresh deciduous fruit trade occurs within the EU-27.

There are approximately 14,000 hectares currently cultivated for apples. The main producing areas include the prefectures of Kastoria, Pella, and Imathia in Macedonia; Volos, Larissa, Pelion, and Kissavos in Thessaly; Arcadia in Peloponnese. The green varieties (mostly Granny Smith) follow with 16 percent, and the yellow varieties (particularly Golden Delicious) with 9 percent. The remaining 18 percent of cultivated orchards are planted with Fuji, Gala, and new apple varieties (Ariane, Belgica, Cameo, Diwa, Honey Crunch, Jazz, Junami, Rubens, Tentation, Wellant, etc.). Due to its excellent quality and shapely form, the Zagora apple (a local Red Delicious variety) has been awarded by the European Commission as a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin), also known as Geographic Indication of Origin. CONSUMPTION MY 2012/13 Greek apple consumption is forecast to decrease by 2.7 percent. Most apples are consumed fresh. TRADE MY 2012/13 Greek apple exports are forecast to remain steady. Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria, and Albania represent the main destinations for Greek apples. Italy, Germany, and Chile remain the main suppliers to the Greek apple market. II. PEARS

The main producing areas include the prefectures of Tirnavos and Larissa in Thessaly, Laconia, and Korinth in Peloponnese. William Christ/Bartlett, Passacrassana, Abate Fetel, and Coscia- Ercollini are the major pear varieties grown in Greece. CONSUMPTION MY 2012/13 Greek pear consumption is forecast to grow by 21.7 percent driven by the increased production. Most pears are consumed fresh. TRADE MY 2011/12 Greek pear imports reached 4,509 MT, 68 percent less comparet to MY2010/11. Greece imports the majority of its pears (mainly Conference, Passacrassana, Abate Fetel, and Blanquilla varieties) from Spain, Italy, and Germany, accounting for 77 percent of the total. MY 2011/12 Greek pear exports reached 3,582 MT, a decrease of 60 percent compared to the previous year. Even at reduced volumes, Romania, Albania, and Bulgaria continue to be the main destinations for Greek pears. III. TABLE GRAPES Table 5: Production, Supply, and Demand (MT)

According to industry estimates, MY 2012/13 table grape production is estimated to be satisfactory despite the severe drought from mid July to the last week of August that negatively affected fruit ripening. In Greece, there are approximately 16,5000 hectares currently cultivated with table grapes. The main producing areas include the prefectures of Corinth in Peloponnese; Kavala in Macedonia; Heraklion in the island of Crete. Sultana (Thompson Seedless) and Victoria are the major table grape varieties grown in Greece. CONSUMPTION MY 2012/2013 table grape consumption is forecast to increase by 5.5 percent. TRADE Greek table grape (both seedless and seeded) is mainly marketed within Europe from late July to the end of September. Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom represent the main destinations for Greek table grapes (especially Victoria and Sultana varieties), accounting for 65 percent of the total.
