Sun and Shade Perennials from Hallson Gardens for 2015 This is a listing of perennials for the sunny garden by botanical name and the shade perennial listing follows. Soil and moisture conditions should also be taken into account when choosing plants, but this will help narrow your search for plants that are primarily considered sun plants. Achillea 'Moonshine' Achillea 'Moonshine' is an easy to grown, mounding yarrow with bright yellow flower heads over silvery foliage, growing 18 to 24" high and wide. It looks great with Salvia 'Caradonna' and other purple flowering sun plants! Achillea 'Saucy Seduction' Achillea 'Saucy Seduction' (PP#20782) is a brightly colored yarrow with sturdy, compact stems and an upright habit with fuchsia pink flowers that age to medium pink. It grows 18 to 24" high and loves it in the hot, dry sun garden. Agastache 'Blue Fortune' Agastache 'Blue Fortune' is a wonderful plant for the summer garden with 36" tall bluish-lavender flower spikes over anise scented foliage from July to September. It goes well with yellow flowers for a bright contrast or with pinks for a pastel combination. Allium 'Blue Eddy' Allium 'Blue Eddy' is a selection of Allium senescens var. 'Glaucum' with tight clumping, spiral foliage that is a touch more blue than its parent but with the same great, late summer, 1 1/2" lavender flowers. Allium senescens Price: $6.75, 3-4: $6.00, 5+ $5.00 Allium senescens, known as German garlic, has thin green blades that grow vertically with a little bit of a twist, forming a clump like a miniature daylily. In late summer each clump is covered with lavender, pom-pom shaped blooms. Allium senescens var. 'Glaucum' Allium senescens var. 'Glaucum', curly allium, has very attractive foliage made up of fine bluegray blades that form a swirling pattern. In late summer each clump is covered with lavender blooms and they make an excellent border plant in the hot sunny garden. Amsonia 'Blue Ice' Amsonia 'Blue Ice' is a short selection of Amsonia with navy blue buds that open to light periwinkle blue flowers in early summer. It grows 12 to 16" high and works well as a natural looking border plant in the well-drained, sunny garden.

Amsonia hubrichtii Amsonia hubrichtii is a narrow leaf willow blue star with bluish-green, ferny foliage that is covered with light blue star shaped flowers in early summer. After flowering the clumps grow up to 36" high and the foliage turns bright yellow in fall. Aster 'Alert' Aster novi-belgii 'Alert' is a floriferous, compact aster growing 12 to 15" tall with richly colored, purplish-red flowers from late summer into fall. Aster 'October Skies' Price: $7.75 Aster o. 'October Skies' is a large clumping plant making a nearly perfect mound of fine foliage that is covered with many small, purplish-blue flowers in the fall. Aster 'Snow Flurry' Aster e. 'Snow Flurry' is a very low and dense groundcover that is covered with white, gold centered flowers on horizontal, branching stems in September. It grows 6 to 8" high and 24" wide. Baptisia 'Blue Towers', 3+ $12.00 Baptisia 'Blue Towers' (PPAF) forms a tall, 4 1/2' vase-shape clump with 20" flower stalks that carry large periwinkle to lavender blue flowers in early summer. This upright form allows space to plant around it and the height makes for a great background plant. Baptisia 'Blueberry Sundae' Price: $10.75, 3+ $10.00 Baptisia 'Blueberry Sundae' (PPAF) is an improvement over the species with dense clusters of vibrant, deep indigo blue flowers on a compact, upright mound. It grows 3' high and 2 to 3' wide. It is a Proven Winners perennial selection. Baptisia 'Cherries Jubilee', 3+ $12.00 Baptisia 'Cherries Jubilee' (PP#23907) has uniquely colored maroon buds that open to maroon and yellow flowers which age to a smoky orange. The flowers are held on long spikes in early summer above pea-like foliage, forming a 3' high and wide clump. Baptisia 'Dutch Chocolate' Price: $10.75, 3+ $10.00 Baptisia 'Dutch Chocolate' (PPAF) has uniquely colored chocolate-purple flowers with a slight yellow midrib, flowering in early summer on long spikes over a mound of blue-green foliage that grows 3' high and 2 to 3' wide. Baptisia 'Indigo Spires', 3+ $12.00 Baptisia 'Indigo Spires' (PPAF) forms a fully rounded, 3 1/2 to 4' clump of blue-green foliage and in early summer it has 12 to 15" spikes of deep violet purple flowers with a yellow midrib, all around the clump.

Baptisia 'Lemon Meringue', 3+ $12.00 Baptisia 'Lemon Meringue' (PPAF) is a wonderful, vigorous selection with brightly colored lemon yellow flowers in early summer on long spikes over a mound of blue-green foliage that grows 3' high and 3' wide. Baptisia 'Solar Flare' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Baptisia 'Solar Flare' Prairieblues is an improved hybrid Baptisia with lemon yellow turning rusty orange blushed flowers in early summer on 2' long spikes over a mound of blue-green foliage that grows 3' high and 3 to 4' wide. (PP#20408) Baptisia 'Twilite Prairieblues' Price: $10.75, 3+ $10.00 Baptisia 'Twilite Prairieblues' ( PP#19011) is a hybrid Baptisia with smoky purple flowers with a yellow midrib, blooming in early summer on 2' long spikes over a huge mound of blue-green foliage. This is a very large Baptisia creating a 4' x 5' clump. Baptisia 'Vanilla Cream', 3+ $12.00 Baptisia 'Vanilla Cream' (PPAF) is a shorter false indigo with bronzy foliage as it emerges in the spring and in early summer it has 10" creamy yellow flowers. The clumps are relatively compact, growing 3' tall and wide. Belamcanda chinensis Belamcanda chinensis, blackberry lily, is a great plant for either the sunny or shady garden. It has iris-like foliage topped with orange, spotted flowers in summer on 24 to 36" stems followed by large pods which open to reveal blackberry-like seeds. Belamcanda chinensis 'Freckle Face' Belamcanda chinensis 'Freckle Face' has 2" brilliant orange blossoms with shading and speckling above green, iris-like foliage. The flowers reach about 24" high and are followed by interesting black seed clusters. Grow it in sun or shade. Belamcanda chinensis 'Hello Yellow' Belamcanda chinensis 'Hello Yellow' has yellow, unspotted flowers that bloom above compact, blue-green, iris-like foliage. The flowers reach about 18" high so they are much shorter than the species and work well towards the border in the sun OR shade garden. Caryopteris 'Snow Fairy' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Caryopteris 'Snow Fairy' is an herbaceous perennial with green leaves edged in pure white forming a beautiful 36" clump. In the fall it is covered with many tiny blue, orchid-like flowers though its main appeal is from its fantastic variegation. Centaurea 'Gold Bullion' PP#10865 Centaurea 'Gold Bullion' forms a basal clump of electric yellow foliage that is topped with rich, bluish-purple flowers on 15" stems in summer for a beautiful contrast. The foliage greens up a bit after blooming but new growth is always bright yellow.

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (plumbago) Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (plumbago) is a creeping groundcover for sun to part shade with deep green leaves that are topped with deep blue flowers in late summer into fall. The leaves turn red-orange after frost for great autumn color. Chelone 'Hot Lips' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Chelone 'Hot Lips' has deep rosy-pink blossoms in late summer on 36" upright stems with glossy, deep green, serrated foliage on darkly tinted stems. They love to grow in rich, moisture retentive soil and the flowers are a hummingbird favorite. Chelone obliqua Price: $8.75, 3-4: $8.00, 5-9: $7.00, 10+ $6.00 Chelone obliqua (pink turtlehead) has bright lilac-pink blossoms in late summer on 36" upright stems with deep green serrated foliage. They have wonderful unique blossoms that are attractive to hummingbirds. Give them rich, moist soil for best growth. Clematis recta 'SERIOUS BLACK ' Clematis recta 'Serious Black ' is an upright herbaceous clematis with glossy purple foliage in the spring and many masses of white flowers blooming atop 3' clumps of olive green foliage in summer. Coreopsis 'Route 66' Coreopsis 'Route 66' (PP#20609) has 2" yellow flowers with a red eye atop airy, needle-like foliage in summer and as the weather cools in fall, red becomes the dominant flower color, giving it a different look through the year. It grows about 24" high and wide. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' Price: $1.50, 5-9: $1.30, 10-19: $1.10, 20-49: $0.90, 50+ $0.75 Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is a fantastic plant for the sunny perennial garden. It has deep scarlet red flowers on 40" tall, arching spikes that rise above grass-like, sword shaped green foliage. Bulbs are 10 to 12 cm +. Minimum order is 3 bulbs. Dendranthema 'Overture' Dendranthema 'Overture' is a colorful, vigorous, hardy garden mum with large, single blooming orange-red turning dark red petals around a yellow-orange center. They are large mounding to 24" high and free flowering, blooming for weeks in September and October. Dictamnus albus 'Albiflorus' Price: $9.75, 3+ $9.00 Dictamnus 'Albiflorus' is a pure white selection of gas plant with upright, 24 to 36" spikes of flowers win late spring to midsummer above a bushy clump of dark green, leathery, pinnate leaves. Echinacea 'Green Jewel' Echinacea 'Green Jewel' (PP#18678) has unique light green petals around a green cone. They make great cut flowers and are lightly fragrant and long lasting, blooming on 24" stems.

Eupatorium 'Chocolate' Eupatorium 'Chocolate' is great for season long interest. Leaves start out chocolate-purple turning green, held on purple stems, and in September they are covered with masses of starry white flowers. It grows 3' tall and wide and prefers part sun to part shade. Euphorbia 'First Blush' PP#15292 Price: $9.75, 3-4: $9.00, 5-9: $8.00, 10+ $7.00 Euphorbia 'First Blush' is a compact plant with spectacular tri-color pink, white, and green foliage topped with bright yellow bracts in spring. It grows about 12" high and 15" wide and does very well along the border or in the rock garden. Euphorbia polychroma Price: $6.75, 3-4: $6.00, 5+ $5.00 Euphorbia polychroma, or cushion spurge, forms an 18" mound of green foliage that is covered with bright yellow bracts in the spring and in the fall the foliage turns an attractive bronze-red. Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire' PP#18585 Price: $9.75, 3-4: $9.00, 5-9: $8.50, 10+ $8.00 Euphorbia polychroma 'Bonfire' forms a spectacular 18" mound of reddish-purple foliage and in the spring it is topped with yellow and orange bracts. Plant it in a hot, sunny location for the deepest, darkest summer color. Geranium 'Elizabeth Ann' PP#11252 Geranium 'Elizabeth Ann' is a wonderful plant with chocolate colored foliage topped with lavender flowers in the summer, plus the foliage turns red in the fall. It is easy to grow, spreading slowly to form a dense mound about 15" tall and 18" wide. Geranium sanguineum 'Album' Geranium sanguineum 'Album' has pure white flowers over cut foliage that turns a beautiful red in the fall. It is easy to grow and durable, forming a free-flowering mound for months in the summer. Geranium sanguineum var. striatum Price: $7.75, 3-4: $7.00, 5+ $6.50 Geranium sanguineum var. striatum has soft pink flowers with deep rose-pink veins that flower all summer above slow spreading, 8 to 10" clumps of finely dissected foliage. They are easy to grow and make a terrific border plant in the sun to part sun garden. Gypsophila 'Double Snowflake' Gypsophila 'Double Snowflake' forms a 24 to 36" mound of mostly double, airy white flowers in midsummer over fine, blue-green foliage. Gypsophila 'My Pink' Gypsophila 'My Pink' (PP#17485) is a large mounding, long stemmed and long blooming, true pink baby's breath with summer flowers on a 36" mound of upright, branching foliage. Underplant with tall lilies for a great arrangement and use bunches for cut flowers. Helianthus 'Happy Days' Helianthus 'Happy Days' has long lasting 3 to 4" golden yellow flowers with short petals surrounding a double center on tall 3 to 5 foot stems. It does best in the well-drained sun garden and will spread slowly to form a dense clump.

Helianthus multiflorus 'Capenoch Star' Helianthus multiflorus 'Capenoch Star' is a single blooming variant of the double flowering perennial sunflower. It has wonderful 3" yellow sunflowers on sturdy 5 to 6' stems. Heliopsis 'Tuscan Sun' Heliopsis 'Tuscan Sun' (PP#18763) has 24 to 36" upright stems topped with many bright golden yellow, daisy-like flowers with an orange-gold button center. It is long blooming and great for mid summer to fall color. A Proven Winners perennial selection. Hibiscus 'Blue River II' Price: $11.75 Hibiscus 'Blue River II' forms a 4 to 5' tall shrub-like plant of bluish-green foliage covered with large, pure white flowers with no contrasting eye from late summer to fall. It forms an impressive sized clump and the flowers get bigger and better as it matures. Hibiscus 'Cherry Cheesecake' Price: $14.75 Hibiscus 'Cherry Cheesecake' (PPAF) has 7 to 8" flowers with thick, ruffled, overlapping petals that are white with magenta tips and magenta veining radiating out from a cherry red eye. It has dark green, maple-like foliage and grows 4 to 5' tall and wide. Hibiscus 'Cranberry Crush' Hibiscus 'Cranberry Crush' (PP#21984) is a spectacular plant forming a rounded, short clump of deep green, maple-like foliage with purple overtones, covered with deep, cranberry red, 7 to 8" flowers from midsummer into fall. Hibiscus 'Fireball' PP#13631 Hibiscus 'Fireball' grows about 4' high and has strap-like deep green foliage with red tints and red stems. From midsummer to fall it is covered with 10 to 12" deep red flowers that really stand out in the garden. Hibiscus 'Heartthrob' Hibiscus 'Heartthrob' (PPAF) is the darkest red hibiscus to date, with deep red blossoms and a blackish-red center and veining. It is somewhat compact, growing to 4' high, and is covered with 8 to 10" flowers in late summer. Hibiscus 'Jazzberry Jam' Hibiscus 'Jazzberry Jam' (PPAF) has vibrant, 9" deep magenta flowers with a red eye and heavily ruffled petals flowering on upright, full and robust plants growing 4 to 5 feet high. Hibiscus 'Kopper King' PP#10793 Price: $11.75 Hibiscus 'Kopper King' grows about 4' high and has deeply cut, bronze tinted maple-like foliage on reddish stems. In mid to late summer it is topped with 10" wide light pink to white flowers with a large red starburst in the center. Hibiscus 'Lord Baltimore' Price: $10.75 Hibiscus 'Lord Baltimore' forms a 4 to 5' clump with deeply lobed green foliage and large 10", lightly ruffled crimson red flowers from late summer into fall. The brilliant red flowers stand out in the landscape and are especially attractive to hummingbirds.

Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' Price: $14.75 Hibiscus 'Midnight Marvel' (PPAF) is a spectacular hybrid with dark purple tinted, maple-like foliage that is covered with 8 to 9" scarlet red flowers from late summer into fall. It grows about 4' tall and will have the darkest foliage color with lots of sunlight. Hibiscus 'My Valentine' Hibiscus 'My Valentine' (PPAF) grows about 4' high, has bright green, maple-like foliage that forms a nice mounding habit, and large 8-9, pure velvety red flowers cover the plants from late summer into fall. Hibiscus 'Party Favor' Price: $11.75 Hibiscus 'Party Favor' (PP#22250) has long blooming, 8 to 10" glossy cotton candy pink flowers with heavily ruffled, overlapping petals and a red eye. It grows 5' tall and flowers from midsummer to frost. Hibiscus 'Pink Elephant' Hibiscus 'Pink Elephant' (PP#21883) forms a large 5 to 6' tall clump of soft green foliage that is covered with huge 12" medium pink petals with a darker rose-red eye in late summer. The flowers are the largest we've ever seen on a hibiscus plant. Hibiscus 'Plum Fantasy' Hibiscus 'Plum Fantasy' (PPAF) is very floriferous with red buds that open to 8 to 9" vibrant magenta red, puckered and crinkled flowers with a deep red eye. It has dark green, maple-like foliage and grows 5 to 6' high. Hibiscus 'Sultry Kiss' Hibiscus 'Sultry Kiss' (PP#22300) has green maple-like leaves with reddish-purple stems growing 4 to 5' tall with huge 9 to 11" magenta-red flowers from midsummer until frost.
