ABSTRACT Major Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) groupings are used to report u.s. agricultural trade with countries and regions of the Western Hemisphere, 1962-70; and trade of \\estern Hemisphere countries with the world, 1962-68 or 1962-69. Trade of Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela is shown by principal trading partners as well as by major SITC groups and leading commodities, 1965-69. FOREWORD This publication provides, for the first time, a historical series showing u.s. agricultural trade with countries and regions of the Western Hemisphere by major Standard International Trade Classification (SITC); trade of Western Hemisphere countries by major SITC groups, and trade of leading Western Hemisphere countries by destination and origin as well as by principal commodities (SITC groups). Data for u.s. trade with countries of the Western Hemisphere are for 1962-70; data for countries of the Western Hemisphere are for 1962-68 or 1962-69; and data for Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela are for 1965-69. u.s. data in this publication should be valuable in analyzing trends in U.S.-Western Hemisphere agricultural trade and help provide a more complete review of agricultural relations between the United States and these countries. Data may also be utilized in competition, market development, and projection studies. Country trade data show trends in total agricultural exports and imports. Analysis of data by major SITC groups indicates shifts in trade of commodity groups. Changes may have resulted from changes in prices of commodities traded, domestic and foreign demand, government policies, and such. Trade tables 77-92 for Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela show exports and imports of major commodities and leading trading partners. Although statistics are for a short time period, some trends in trade of commodities and trading partners are evident. Some difficulty was encountered in resolving contradictions and reconciling data given in national and international sources. Agricultural statistics published in country trade books, United Nations trade runs, and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Trade Yearbooks may differ, especially for codes 05, 08, 09, 261-265, and 4. For example, FAO data do not include trade in wool tops and the U.N. trade runs do not include fish oil. Some country trade books which are coded according to SITC put various 05 items in the 09 category and vice versa. In some cases, fishmeal is included in one country under 08 (animal feed) and in another under 27 (crude fertilizer). An attempt has been made to group data for Chile and Peru according to the SITC commodity code, although the original data were not reported in this form. In some cases, footnotes have been added to indicate differences due in part to definitions of coverage. Regular import data for Mexico do not include imports from free trade zones. For certain items, principally cattle, coffee, and cotton, regular export data include values administratively determined by Mexican custom officials. Since this results in undervaluation, the Bank of Mexico has assigned these exports more realistic values. Mexican trade data herein have been adjusted to include imports from free trade zones and revalued exports.
