Monitoring EU Agri-Food Trade: Development until October 2016 October 2016 EU agri-food exports stabilise at high level The monthly value of EU agri-food exports in October 2016 stabilised at EUR 11.4 billion, almost similar to the October 2015 level, although not further increasing after the record level in September 2016. Highest increases in monthly export values (October 2016 compared to October 2015) were recorded for Asian markets: China (EUR +78 million), South Korea (EUR +66 million), followed by Vietnam and Japan (both about EUR +40 million). Export values went down in particular to Saudi Arabia (EUR -104 million), Turkey and Nigeria. The highest increases in monthly export values compared to the previous year were achieved for infant food (EUR +57 million), olive oil (EUR +49 million), pork (EUR +45 million) and live animals (EUR +45 million). On the other hand, monthly export values in October 2016 compared to October 2015 went down in particular for wheat and other cereals, raw hides and skins. In October 2016, agri-food imports to the EU went down to a value of EUR 8.8 billion from EUR 9.5 billion in October 2015. The highest increase in monthly import values was from Paraguay and Costa Rica, the highest reduction in imports from Brazil and Argentina.

Japan now more important for EU agri-food exports than Russia For the 12-months period November 2015 to October 2016, EU agri-food exports reached a value of EUR 129.9 billion, corresponding to an increase by 1.9% in value terms compared to the same period one year ago. Major gains were achieved in values of agri-food exports to the USA (EUR + 1.5 billion; +8%) and China (EUR +1.2 billion; +12%), although exports to Hong Kong went down significantly. Increases were also recorded in agri-food exports to Japan (EUR +0.4 billion) and Vietnam (EUR +330 million). Exports to Israel, Switzerland, Norway, Australia and Morocco, each increased by more than EUR 200 million in the twelve-month period. Exports to Russia further went down, from EUR 5.7 billion (Nov 2014 to Oct 2015) to EUR 5.5 billion (Nov 2015 to Oct 2016), i.e. a reduction in values by 5%. Russia now has fallen behind the USA, China, Switzerland and Japan to rank number 5 of EU destinations for agri-food exports. The value of exports to Algeria (EUR -0.6 billion) and Egypt (EUR -0.4 billion) also went down. Analysing the EU export performance over the last twelve months per product category, export values increased in particular for pig meat (EUR +1.2 billion; +32% compared to export values in the 12-months period one year ago), meat offal, other meat and fat (EUR +477 million; +21%), fresh vegetables (EUR +469 million; +17%), and olive oil (EUR +435 million; +20%). In relative terms, high increases in export values were also seen for butter (+28%) and oilseeds (+27%). Similar to the development recorded for previous periods, raw hides and skins (EUR -1.2 billion; -42%), other cereals (EUR -968 million; - 33%), milk powders (EUR -683 million; -16%) and wheat (EUR -408 million; -6.5%) lost most in export values over the last 12 months. EU trade surplus in agri-food at EUR 18 billion over 12 months Agri-food imports from third countries in the 12- months period November 2015 to October 2016 came into the EU at a value of EUR 112 billion, i.e. a slight decrease by 0.1% compared to the same period one year ago. The export surplus for the 12-months period thus increased to more than EUR 18 billion. Despite a reduction in the month of October 2016, imports from Ukraine showed the highest increase in values (EUR +612 million; +17%) over the 12-months period. Over this period, EU import values for agri-food products also went up for Ivory Coast by EUR +457 million (+15%), Peru (EUR +234 million; +13%) and Mexico (EUR +130 million; +12%). Australia, Switzerland, Ghana, Vietnam, Costa Rica and Guatemala also improved in agri-food exports to the EU by at least EUR 100 million each. On the other hand, the value of agri-food imports from Brazil decreased by EUR 1.2 billion (-9%) and imports from other important suppliers, Indonesia, the USA and Turkey went down compared to the previous 12 months period. Looking at imports per product category, the highest increase in values over the last 12 months was for cocoa beans (EUR +683 million; +17%). Imports also increased in particular for cereals other than wheat (EUR +555 million; +28%), vegetable oils other than palm and olive oil (EUR +491 million; +27%), oilseeds other than soya beans (EUR +426 million; +15%), and fresh vegetables (EUR +345 million; 8%). On the other hand, import values decreased in particular for commodities such as oilcakes (EUR -1.4 billion; -16%), unroasted coffee and tea in bulk (EUR -0.9 billion; -11%), and other goods such as olive oil (EUR -421 million; -58%), palm oil, palm kernel and coconut oil (EUR -332 million; -6%), as well as for raw tobacco and for wheat. Focus on: EU agri-food trade with Japan Japan now is the fourth important export market for EU agri-food. Negotiations about a bilateral trade agreement are going on and a successful conclusion would open further opportunities for the EU agri-food sector. EU agri-food exports to Japan, 2015 The EU is a net exporter of agri-food products to Japan. The EU net-surplus in agri-food trade with Japan has been around EUR 5 billion annually for the last years. The 2015 value of EU agri-food exports to Japan reached a total of EUR 5.3 billion, with main focus on pork, wine and vermouth, cheese and spirits and liqueurs. Processed products (including wine and cheese) and other primary products (including meat) are the most important categories for exports. The annual value of EU exports to Japan has been increasing rapidly until 2012, but since then at a much slower pace. EU imports from Japan so far only amount to EUR 240 million (2015), certainly with a potential to expand as well. The most important Japanese export products to the EU market are soups and sauces, spirits and liqueurs, food preparations and seeds. Structure of EU Agri-food trade with Japan, 2005-2015
