tasting notes OUR CURATED EQUITY PUNK BEER CLUB
THE BEERS INSIDE YOUR Hello once again from the internet! It s BottleBox time again your regular re-up of curated craft beer from BrewDog. As a card-carrying Equity Punk these are the releases your investment helped create, produced in a brewery you own a part of. And we even deliver them straight to your door. How cool is that? We charge into the latest box with our latest Seasonal release the spring session wonder Clockwork Tangerine. We also include our Vermont-style IPA Hazy Jane, alongside the beer that started it all for us Punk IPA. As this time of year was made for pale and hoppy we have also included Elvis Juice and our newest Amplified India Pale Ale Native Son. We dial in a second Headliner thanks to 5AM Saint and bring it to you with a side of Jet Black Heart Nitro. Staying on the dark side we have our wildcard maple stout Kamikaze Knitting Club, and we round the BottleBox off with the big-hitting Abstrakt AB:24 and our brand new New England IPA Eight-Bit. We hope you enjoy these beers as much as we enjoyed brewing them! James and Martin
CLOCKWORK TANGERINE HAZY JANE CLOCKWORK TANGERINE HAZY JANE Following hot on the heels of Zeitgeist, our next 2018 Seasonal beer takes its place having been crowned victor of the 2017 Prototype Challenge (as the less snappy Tangerine Session IPA ). Now renamed Clockwork Tangerine, this brew packs a citrus punch on a par with Elvis Juice, but clocking in at just 4.5%. As a session-strength IPA, it dials down the ABV and ratchets up the pithy bitterness thanks to a judicious application of tangerine. Cheers to Spring! Explosive aromas of tangerine and mandarin meld seamlessly with notes of grapefruit and lime. The palate is light and dry; malt plays second fiddle to flavours of orange peel and pine. Each sip rises and falls, with intense flavour building, and the light finish leaving you ready for more. Country: Scotland Style: Session IPA ABV: 4.5% Pair with: Lemon and Herbed Sea Bass Malts: Pale, Cara, Crystal Hops: Chinook, Ahtanum, Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo, Cascade, Nelson Sauvin Hazy Jane is a beer we worked on for months, with smallbatch trials and taste panel meetings coming together in a single release. New England IPAs are unquestionably the style of the moment so in putting this beer together, we put in the hours. With the same ABV as Jack Hammer but less than a third the bitterness, this beer is about the interplay of the high-level aromas and flavours from some of our favourite US hops. Served unfiltered and canned fresh, it is our take on the hottest style of the moment. New England IPA has to tick several boxes. It requires a low background bitterness and intense juicy fruit character. Pineapple, stonefruit, mango, light resin and hints of lime peel Hazy Jane is full-bodied and smooth, enhancing those soft ripe fruit flavours. Style: New England IPA ABV: 7.2% Pair with: Pinapple Upside-Down Cake IBU: 30 Malts: Pale, Oats, Wheat Hops: Amarillo, Chinook, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe : - 4 - : - 5 -
PUNK IPA ELVIS JUICE PUNK IPA ELVIS JUICE The beer that started a revolution. Our flagship India Pale Ale was the direct result of James and Martin brewing beer they wanted to drink, based on the influences of the burgeoning American craft beer scene. The resultant trans-atlantic IPA is fresh, full-forward and pays due homage to the India Pale Ales of yesteryear. With explosions of fruity hops at every stage, it is truly a beer to rally behind something we have done since the day BrewDog was formed, eleven years ago in 2007. With tropical fruits and light caramel on the nose, the palate soon becomes assertive and resinous with the New Zealand hops balanced by the biscuit malt. The finish is aggressive, dry and resinous, with the hops emerging over warming alcohol. This postmodern twist of huge levels of dry-hopping give that characteristic explosion of tropical fruit flavour from start to finish. Style: IPA ABV: 5.6% Pair with: Chicken Tikka Colour: Light Gold Malts: Extra Pale, Cara Hops: Simcoe, Chinook, Ahtanum, Cascade, Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo We first released our small-batch American citrus IPA in mid-2015 as a Prototype loaded with juice it gave the beer a slightly sour edge but from the start we wanted Elvis Juice to be a go-to takeout beer, perfect for picnics, road-trips and other similar occasions. So we worked on the recipe and dialled in the fruitiness on an epic scale, switching to zesty peel inside of the more tart and acidic juice. And the results are very much what we intended Elvis Juice revitalised and fully Amplified. Bursting with layer upon layer of grapefruit and tangerine from the judicious amount of zested peel playing off the five different US hops, Elvis is truly citrus on top of citrus. With a baseline of caramel malt, the waves of crashing orange, grapefruit and pine can take centre stage. Style: IPA ABV: 6.5% Pair with: Grapefruit Soufflé Malts: Cara, Extra Pale Hops: Amarillo, Citra, Magnum, Mosaic, Simcoe Extra: Grapefruit Peel : - 6 - : - 7 -
NATIVE SON 5AM SAINT NATIVE SON 5AM SAINT Our head of production Jason Pond joined us from Firestone Walker over a year ago, when our Captain James set him the task of creating his ideal go-to beer. So as a proud son of Colorado he loaded up the hop cannon and set to work on Native Son a quintessential West Coast IPA. As American as the fourth of July this beer was an instant hit at BrewDog HQ (as if it was ever in doubt) and so for 2018 we have added it to our full-time Amplified line-up. Hooray for hops! Jason s take on the classic WCIPA has a simple yet clean malt base, enough bitterness to appease the taste buds without wrecking them and a hop profile that is loaded with grapefruit, citrus zest and slightly floral aromas. Style: IPA ABV: 8.5% Pair with: Loaded Cheeseburger (onion rings a must) IPA: 70 Malts: Crystal Hops: Columbus, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Citra, Mosaic A robust red ale, 5AM is hopped to the brink and back with some of our favourite North American hops and featuring a rich, roasty base of speciality malts for flavour and colour. The second beer we ever dry-hopped (after we had dialled in Punk IPA), this technique transformed one of our existing amber ales The Physics making a roasty, fruit beer so much more. Switching to US hops over English ones, combined with this massive dryhopping, created this hugely popular beer that has remained in our Headliner range ever since. The nose is a riot of citrus and berry aromas, from orange to lychee to redcurrant. On the palate is a bold resinous bitterness which builds against the burnt sugar sweetness. The finish is clean and the fruity notes linger on. A bitter twist on a classic style, this red ale takes the best of sweet malt and bitter hops and fuses them in perfect harmony. Style: American Red Ale ABV: 5.0% Pair With: Ribs IBU: 35 Malts: Extra Pale, Munich, Cara, Crystal, Dark Crystal Hops: Cascade, Simcoe, Amarillo, Centennial, Ahtanum, Nelson Sauvin : - 8 - : - 9 -
JET BLACK HEART NITRO KAMIKAZE KNITTING CLUB JET BLACK HEART NITRO KAMAIKAZE KNITTING CLUB We long wanted to return a dark beer to our Headlining lineup, and after trialling a limited-edition B-Side Milk Stout, the fledgling Jet Black Heart was released into the 2015 Prototype Challenge to see what would happen. What happened was it won the competition at a canter, never polling less than 40% of the overall vote. Our eight malt, two hop, fourlegged friend is black as pitch and smooth as hell. The flaked oats and wheat add to the mouthfeel throughout, with the Nitro canning taking this to a whole other level. On the aroma, a depth of roasted coffee beans and chocolate, with raisin and other dark fruits. The first thing that comes to the fore on the taste is the full-bodied richness, with the velvety mouthfeel leading to an intensity of smooth vanilla and dark berry fruit. These flavours in turn lift and amplify the chocolate character into a long, roasty aftertaste. Style: Milk Stout ABV: 4.7% Pair with: Shin of Beef Stew IBU: 30 Hops: Magnum, Sorachi Ace Malts: Pale, Wheat, Crystal, Extra Dark Crystal, Brown, Black, Carafa, Oats We had a blast brewing our limited-edition Wild Card releases last year, and the first of 2018 s quartet of small-batch brews is perfect for those struggling to find the first light of spring. We decided to brew a stout but one including that most quintessential of Canadian exports maple syrup. But in order to prevent it descending into gloopy sweetness (as fun as that is) we added the key hop Sorachi Ace. This Japanese wiz acts to balance the saccharine elements with truly complementary herbal bitterness. At its most obvious the beer is a warming, slightly smoky stout as it highlights those dark malts that release flavours of chocolate and coffee. But the Sorachi gives its classic herbal, coconutty citrus element that allows the woodsy notes of the maple to appear. Country: Scotland Style: Stout ABV: 7.5% Pair with: Sponge Pudding Malts: Pale, Chocolate, Cara, Carafa Extras: Maple Syrup : - 10 - : - 11 -
ABSTRAKT AB:24 This Abstrakt release pays homage to the wooden ships that traversed the Baltic to trade with the Imperial Russian court. To stave off the harshness of winter these ships would carry strong, dark beer, coffee and other warming items so our twentyfourth Abstrakt release is a cold-fermented Baltic Porter enriched by coldbrew coffee and dark muscovado sugar. This is a bracing beer set square in the face of the wildest weather imaginable, and as such an ideal for when the curtains are closed and the fire is dwindling into embers. ABSTRAKT AB:24 AB:24 is a huge, mochaforward beer laded with the aromas of freshlybrewed coffee, toasty caramel, red berry fruit and a bitter chocolate undercurrent. Decanted into your finest glassware, it is designed to be rich, warming and fullflavoured, with an almost brandy-like backbone from the muscovado and double-digit ABV. Style: Baltic Porter ABV: 12.0% Pair with: Sachertorte Malts: Pale, Munich, Crystal, Double Roast Crystal, Chocolate Wheat. Oats Extras: Muscovado Sugar, Coldbrew Coffee : - 12 - EIGHT-BIT We go retro with the style of the moment. The day before #Punk AGM 2018 the guest breweries we invited to pour their beer at the AECC headed up to Ellon for a collaborative brewday. Eight breweries put their heads together on an eight-hop 8% New England IPA. Cloudwater, DEYA, Magic Rock, Northern Monk, Stillwater, The Bruery, Seventh Son and us. If you ever wanted proof that the phrase too many cooks is the stuff of nonsense then here is that proof, standing proud in a 500ml can. EIGHT-BIT Packed with stone fruit, tropical notes, citrus peel and bags of fresh and grassy aromas, Eight-Bit is a full-bodied bittersweet pale ale. Each of the breweries picked a hop, and they are the perfect line-up. Country: Scotland Style: IPA ABV: 8.0% Pair With: Friends Malts: Pale, Carapils, Wheat Hops: Magnum, Mandarina Bavaria, Chinook, Hallertaur Blanc, Citra, Nelson Sauvin, Mosaic, German Comet : - 13 -
