Email: qa@c-c-l.com Section 2 Hazards Identification 2.1 Cocoa powder is not classified as a dangerous substance within the definition of 453/2010/EC. Cocoa powder does not contain dangerous and/or harmful ingredients and there are no toxicological effects known. Product labelling must follow 2000/36/EC relating to cocoa and chocolate products intended for human consumption as well as CODEX STAN 105-1981. 2.2 There is no additional hazard identification labelling required. 2.3 Contact with eyes may cause irritation. Inhalation of dust might cause irritation. Allergenic reactions after ingestion of cocoa powder are rare, but may occur on individual basis. Section 3 Composition/Information on Ingredients Cocoa powders are suitable for human consumption. It does not contain any hazardous ingredients, impurities, additives or preservatives. This product complies with all relevant EC legislation such as 2000/36/EC related to cocoa and chocolate products intended for human consumption and WHO/FAO s CODEX STAN 105-1981. During processing cocoa powder may have been alkalised with max. 5% w/w potassium carbonate and/or sodium hydroxide. Both substances are not present in the final product anymore. Section 4 Emergency and First Aid Measures 4.1 Prevent inhalation by careful handling. Use powder breath-protection (dust-mask) when in a dusty environment. After inhalation go into fresh air and seek medical advice when necessary. Accidental eye contact with cocoa powder should be treated by washing the eyes with warm water. Skin contact possess no known hazards. 4.2 As the product is edible, ingestion is not a hazard. Allergenic reactions (e.g. swollen/irritated tongue/lips) are rare, though may occur on individual basis, when these occur in severe circumstances seek medical attention. Section 5 Fire-fighting measures 5.1 Water or carbon dioxide extinguishers may be used. 5.2 Avoid ignition sources in the presence of a fine cocoa dust. During processing electrical grounded equipment must be used to avoid static electric sparkles. For the same reason the anti-static FIBC s (big bags) must be electrical ground during use in production when filled with cocoa powder. 5.3 In case of fire: isolate burning part and dump in abundant amount of water. Fire fighters should wear protective clothing and approved respirator against the smoke. Burning of cocoa powder will produce carbon dioxide and organic decomposition products (smoke). In case of excessive smoke inhalation: go into fresh air, call medical support if necessary. Drinking milk may help detoxification. Section 6 Accidental Release Measures 6.1 There is no need for protective clothing when there is accidental spillage of product. Dust mask is necessary when working in a dusty environment. 6.2 Although the product is bio-degradable, product spillage in the environment must be avoided as much as possible. Recover product by vacuum or broom/shovel and dispose in organic material non-conformity bin. Spilt material must be rejected for food use. 6.3 Normal cleaning procedures (water/soap) can be applied when cleaning surface and material. Section 7 Handling and Storage 7.1 Handling must be done in an industrial hygienic environment. Avoid breathing dust and use in an area with adequate ventilation. Use electric ground equipment to avoid static electric ignition sparkles. When using FIBC s (big bags) also the anti-static FIBC s must be electrical ground. 7.2 Store and transport in a dry, cool area (12-20 C; max 65% RH). Prevent entry of direct sunlight, moisture and foreign odours. 7.3 Specific intended use of the product is as a food ingredient for the food industry. Other applications (e.g. colouring agent) may be applied as well providing customers assessment. Section 8 Exposure Controls/Personal Protection 8.1 Avoid mixing product with flammable gasses or air. Do not use open fire or ignition sources. Do not bring into direct contact with dry hot surfaces. 8.2 No special personal protection is required. It seems however that Theobromine (natural constituent of cocoa and chocolate) is much more difficult to digest for dogs and cats rather than for humans.
